language Department Adds Foreign Touch Language is the topic as Sister Laurenza, Miss Turner and Miss Castineira discuss curriculum. Blother Bartolome, Brother Cyril, and Brother Rodolfo enloy El Artist y El Ladron . l.a Salle's students are attentive as Brother declines a noun. Several new teaching techniques have been introduced into the Language Depart- ment this year. Phonograph records, tele- phones, and paperback books in various languages are a few of the modern methods employed by the Faculty of the language staff, Sister Laurenza, Miss Turner, and Miss Castineira. Under these innovations, students have shown a keener interest in their pursuit of the mastery of a second language, and have acquired a greater knowledge of their courses. The students of La Salle receive a wealth of knowledge from the Language Depart- ment. Through Latin, students learn of the culture that provides the basis for all mod- ern languages. The romance languages, Spanish and French, taught by Brother Cyril, Brother Rodolfo, and Brother Bartolome, give students a wider comprehension of the lan- guages and customs of these countries. ...J

Glance At The Past, Glimpse At The Future Father Leah improvises on topic while Sister Paulinis, Mrs. Phelan, and Mrs. Tynan ob- 7 serve. Camera catches class cut-up. Because of its location as gateway to Latin America, Miami has become a focal point ot history in the last decade. With Miami's prominence in international affairs steadily rising, we have the opportunity of witness- ing many important events as they happen. This is fortunate for all Social Studies stu- dents at Immaculata. Guided by their instruc- tors, Father James Leah, Sister Paulinis, Mrs. Consuelo Phelan, and Mrs. Elizabeth Tynan, they are able to obtain first hand knowledge of the events of the world. In order for a student to have a well- rounded education, he must be aware of the history ot our civilization. At LaSalle, Brother Lewis and Brother Alexis have the task of teaching their students the story of our country and their relationship with the other countries of the world. The basic re- quirement for good citizenship is an under- standing of one's own country and its cus- toms, and the Brothers are seeing to it that this is done through the Social Studies pro- gram. 20 Brother Lewis and Brother Alexis add light touch to class

Because of President Kennedy's desire for a physical fitness program for the youth of America, Mrs. Ruth Angleton, with her assistant, Mrs. Isabel Bustamente, have initiated a new schedule of exer- cises and gymnastics into the usual rou- tine of volleyball, basketball, and soft- ball. This, stepped-up plan of physical education has undoubtedly provided many benefits for all who have participated in it. New to the staff of La Salle this year, Dan Coughlin and Gil Verderber are the first full-time athletic directors the school has had. Previously, physical edu- cation and intramural sports were han- dled by the Brothers.
