Carroll came to Miami from Pittsburgh in 1959, he faced the challenge of being the first bishop of the new Diocese of Miami. Under his direction the diocese has made vast and rapid progress. New parishes have been created, schools and churches have been built and seminaries and retreat houses have been established. This past year, Bishop Carroll spent six weeks in Rome as our diocesan representative to the Ecumenical Council. The Bishop has done much to aid Cuban refugees in the diocese, and has built a new home for orphans in South Florida. ln the short time he has been with us, he has won the love and respect of all, Catholic and non- Catholic alike. 14 Bishop Carroll returning from first session of Vatican Council V gg Producers for '63 if f. Monsignor William McKeever, Superintendent of Dio- cesan Scl1ools, is always ready when help is needed. 'lu Directors Stage our Drama Jan Ross and Linda Wolfe discuss with Sister Marie de Lourdes their While Father Brubaker pre- sides as Supervising Principal, Sister Marie de Lourdes has held her position as Acting Principal since Immaculata was founded. Brother Patrick arrived at La Salle this year. Father James Leah, recently from Notre Dame University, serves as guidance counselor, in addition to his reg- ular teaching assignments. Mr. Bischoff demonstrates new machines. New to the curriculum this year, transcription, the combination of typing and shorthand, was added to the basic courses of bookkeeping, shorthand, and typing in the Business Depart- ment. Future secretaries and business leaders, under the supervision of Sister Rose Dominic, Miss Charles, and Mrs. Forcade, took several field trips to see first-hand how an office is run. Business Department Paves Way, for Future Miss Charles, Sister Rose Dominic, and Mrs. Forcade prepare course of study for upcoming classes. I7 Sister St.lGeorge', Miss Frost, and Mrs. lnzlan decide on booklist for college bound. English Department Sets Fundamental Scene We have been led toward a better under- standing of the mechanics of our own lan- guage as well as a better understanding of our literary culture, both past and present, through the competent skills of Sister St. George, Mrs. lnclan, and Miss Frost. Mrs. ln- clan guides her senior and iunior English classes, while Miss Frost, her sophomore and junior classes, and Sister St. George, her sophomore and freshmen classes. Because many of the students at l.a Salle have recently arrived in Miami, Brother Kevin, Brother James, and Mr. Roger have the task ot teaching not only the regular English courses, but also the fundamentals of the language. The standard English cur- riculum includes both English and world literature, the mechanics of the English language, and grammar. IB Brother Kevin and Brother James are sure the boys will enjoy Milton's Paradise Lost. Students Strive For Special Skills The Art Department, under the guidance of Sister Mary Josepha, made considerable contributions to lmmaculata this year. Art students provided beautiful place cards for a benefit card party held early in the year and supplied numerous clever posters announcing the event. The students could always be re- lied upon to furnish whatever deco- rations might be needed for school functions. Home Economics students guided by Sister Mary Maurice learned the fundamentals of cooking and sewing. Sister covered her subjects thoroughly, including meal plan- ning, table setting, garment con- struction, and fabric co-ordination. Also included in this course was a program on nursing and care of the sick. Four heads are better than one Y' Zi. Because of its location as gateway to Latin America, Miami has become a focal point ot history in the last decade. With Miami's prominence in international affairs steadily rising, we have the opportunity of witness- ing many important events as they happen. This is fortunate for all Social Studies stu- dents at Immaculata. Guided by their instruc- tors, Father James Leah, Sister Paulinis, Mrs. Consuelo Phelan, and Mrs. Elizabeth Tynan, they are able to obtain first hand knowledge of the events of the world. In order for a student to have a well- rounded education, he must be aware of the history ot our civilization. At LaSalle, Brother Lewis and Brother Alexis have the task of teaching their students the story of our country and their relationship with the other countries of the world. The basic re- quirement for good citizenship is an under- standing of one's own country and its cus- toms, and the Brothers are seeing to it that this is done through the Social Studies pro- gram. 20 Brother Lewis and Brother Alexis add light touch to class language Department Adds Foreign Touch Language is the topic as Sister Laurenza, Miss Turner and Miss Castineira discuss curriculum. Blother Bartolome, Brother Cyril, and Brother Rodolfo enloy El Artist y El Ladron . l.a Salle's students are attentive as Brother declines a noun. Several new teaching techniques have been introduced into the Language Depart- ment this year. Phonograph records, tele- phones, and paperback books in various languages are a few of the modern methods employed by the Faculty of the language staff, Sister Laurenza, Miss Turner, and Miss Castineira. Under these innovations, students have shown a keener interest in their pursuit of the mastery of a second language, and have acquired a greater knowledge of their courses. The students of La Salle receive a wealth of knowledge from the Language Depart- ment. Through Latin, students learn of the culture that provides the basis for all mod- ern languages. The romance languages, Spanish and French, taught by Brother Cyril, Brother Rodolfo, and Brother Bartolome, give students a wider comprehension of the lan- guages and customs of these countries. ...J Because of President Kennedy's desire for a physical fitness program for the youth of America, Mrs. Ruth Angleton, with her assistant, Mrs. Isabel Bustamente, have initiated a new schedule of exer- cises and gymnastics into the usual rou- tine of volleyball, basketball, and soft- ball. This, stepped-up plan of physical education has undoubtedly provided many benefits for all who have participated in it. New to the staff of La Salle this year, Dan Coughlin and Gil Verderber are the first full-time athletic directors the school has had. Previously, physical edu- cation and intramural sports were han- dled by the Brothers. Under the guidance of Coaches Coughlin and Verderber, La Salle produced its first football team, and is making great gains with its already established basketball and baseball tedms Physical fitness, prime obgechve That's it, girlsl 22 Spiritual Spotlight Glows With Success The basic course in every Catholic school is, of course, Religion. At Immacu- lata, Father James Leah, formerly of Notre Dame University, Sister St, John, and Sister Teresa Carmel teach Religion courses on all four levels. Father Leah also serves as guidance coun.selor for anyone who might seek his aid in determining the choice of a college or career. We all know that Religion should not be studied only as it is applied to the worship of God. Religionis integrated into all things, into every phase of life. All the Brothers at La Salle realize this, and teach it as it was meant to be taught: an impor- tant part in our way of living. Father Leah and Sister St. John add religious decorum to their class. Sister Teresa Carmel explores early Council history. 23 Science, Vital Character ln Today's World In the field of Science, Immaculata is fortunate to have two teachers of high merit, Sister Mary Theophane and Mrs. Wilma Knight. ln lmmaculata's short span of existence they have firmly established the Science De- partment, including Chemistry, Biology, and Physics as one of the most important and outstanding in the school. The Science Department of La Salle has yet to be developed and utilized to its desired capacity. Under the supervision of Brother Thomas, Brother Mark, and Brother Ronan, however, swift progress is being made so that every possible technique and facility will be available to the students. This year students have used the Chemis- try and Physics Labs at lmmaculata. lt is hoped, however, that these labs will soon be installed at La Salle. Brother Ronan quizzes students in Science. 'f r'tI X Sister Francis Joseph, Mrs. Otero, and Miss Rodriguez prove Trigo- nometry function. Simple Additions to Complex Equations The mathematical minds of Sister Francis Joseph, Mrs. Otero, and Miss Rodriquez have guided their students toward a better knowledge of the Pythagorean theorem and the Law of Sines. Sister Francis Joseph specializes in Geome- try, Mrs. Otero in Algebra and Business Math, and Miss Rodriquez in Algebra, Geometry, and Trigometry. Hundreds of students come into contact with the Mathematics Department every day. A knowledge of math enables students to become precise and accurate in everything they do. Student Council Representatives hold informal meeting. The 1962-63 Student Council is the most active lmmaculata has yet seen. Besides the customary dance held in October, the Council introduced en- graved lmmaculata stationery, bearing the gold seal of the school. Under the sponsorship of the Student Council, six lmmaculata girls played host to Peru- vian students in the Operation Amigo program. Also new this year, Immacu- lata's Student Council has ioined the Dade County Youth Council, an organi- zation dedicated to promoting citizen- ship and civic responsibility among the future leaders of America. 29 c NELSON HERNANDEZ FELIPE SANCHEZ LEONARD CARABALLO GUILLERMO CUETO President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer La Salle 's Council Assumes Lead Representatives wait for president so meeting can begin. They also carry bright yellow violation tickets which they give to any student who forgets herself and violates ci rule of conduct. The Red Cross Club is dedicated to help- ing the needy and unfortunate. The Immacu- lata chapter has sent cards to hospitalized persons, food and clothing to migrant camps, and has made surgical wrappings for Mercy Hospital. I was editor, head of Immaculata- La SaIIe's Annual. This state of exuberance lasted several weeks, but I soon came out of the clouds and realized there was work to be done-and I was the one to do it! With all humility, I feel this has been a very successful endeavor! Everyone, none excluded, gave a part of herself to the Signum. We worked unceasingly, or so it seemed, always supported and sometimes revived by Brother Kevin and Miss Frost. Now the curtain closes.
