Pius X ....... ...... 3 9 Surrounded by Pioneers, Dale Florio battles for a crmcal rebound Proving they have little to learn about high school competition, this year's Freshman Basket- ball Team figuratively tore up their schedule, compiling seventeen wins and five setbacks. With Coach Lawrence Thomas at the helm, the red hot Spartans steam-rolled opponent after opponent with a blistering attack, which included the dead- eye shooting of Dale Florio, the superb playmak- ing of Bill Greig, and the inspired pick-me-up work of Tom Randall, Kevin Chambres, and Kevin Kilduff. Winning by such bombarding margins as a 44- point licking of Hillsborough, a 63 point squelch- ing of Quibbletown, and a 41 point tripping of Holy Trinity. The season was also highlighted by two magnificent performances by Dale Florio, as he scored 47 points against Quibbletown, and a record 53 points in a 102-39 triumph over St. Pius X. Peter's ....,. ...,.,. 6 2 Junior Varsity Basketball If the play of the Junior Varsity is any indication of things to come, then the prospects are bright for next year. Coached by Richard Spangler, the future Varsity hoopsters swept through a gruel- ing schedule, and emerged with a convinc- ing record of 15-6. As the season progressed, it became apparent that the squad was improving with maturity. After dropping their first two contests by a point each to tough St. Mary's fSouth Amboyj and Bridgewater- West, the Spartans exploded and ripped off thirteen wins in their next fourteen. Included in this string was an 87-71 tri- umph over archrival Somerville, and a 35- point trouncing of St. Bernard's. Games like these revealed many hopeful stars like Arnold Slaby, the rugged center, and Kevin Murphy, the prolific scorer and quarterback of the club. -'Q-. Seeking to improve on last year's six Wins, a fired-up Immaculata Varsity Base- ball Team, geared for the new campaign in early March with long hours of rigid training under the leadership of Head Coach Richard Spangler. With this goal in mind the squad is concentrating on im- proved fielding, heavy hitting, and solid pitching. Sparked by returning lettermen Phil Stafford, All-County outfielder in 1969, Third Baseman Jerry Dallessio, Catcher Chet DeStefano, and Pitcher Rob- ert Gula, the Spartans hope to get off on the winning side with a triumph over arch- rival Somerville. Congratulations are in order after Mike Liscovitz drives in the winning run against Rutgers Prep.
