BACK ROW: Richard Spangler. Statistician Patrick Kearney, Joseph Moffett, Joseph Hoey, Peter Manara, John Kelly, Joseph Pellicane, and Joseph Hoey discuss defensive strategy during crucial fourth quarter action against Somerville. Commencing the season under a new coach with the hopes of building a winning team for the fu- ture, the Varsity Basketball squad made tremen- dous strides. With the addition of Manville to the roster, Head Coach Joseph Poplowski attempted to instill confidence in all his players while initiating rigid practices, which included the now famous 'Gtire drills. The end result of this strategy was most reward- ing as the Spartans emerged from a tough sched- ule with a school record of eight wins. Supported by the strong rebounding and high scoring of cen- ter Art Chambres, the aggressive work of Joe Hoey, and the adept playmaking of Tim Murphy, the hoopsters made their mark by snatching the first-place trophy in the Somerset County Christ- mas Tournament, nipping Manville 59-56, and subduing Bernards 72-65. However, the climax came in a thirteen point romp over Somerville, an upset win over state tournament-bound Hoffman, and a fifteen point conquest of Watchung Hills. In this game, Joe Murphy ripped the cords for 31 points, the indi- vidual high forthe season.

THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM CTHE QUESTJ To dream the impossible dream, to fight the unbeatable foe, To bear with unbearable sorrow, to run where the brave dare not go. T 0 right the unrightable wrong, to love pure and chaste from afar, To try when your arms are too weary, to reach the unreachable star! This is my quest, to follow that star, No matter how hopeless, no matter how far, To fight for the right without question or pause, To be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause! And I know, if I'1l only be true to this glorious quest, That my heart will be peaceful and calm, when I'm laid to my rest, And the world will be better for this, that one man, Scorned and covered with scars, still strove with his last ounce of courage To reach the unreachable stars.
