After a sizeable gain, Dan Mitzak is wrestled Varsity Football Generated by the '6Spartan Spirit aimed at winning ways, this year's football program at Immaculata proved highly successful as the Varsity ended the cam- paign with a five and four record. Sparked by the enthusiasm instilled by Head Coach Pierce Fraunheim and capable assistants Gino Conti, Robert Sutton, and Victor Dudka, the gridders battled through a rough schedule to record the school's first victorious season. The opening skirmish against Dunellen gave evidence that the squad would be ready for the grueling contests ahead when it chalked up a 24-2 decision over the Destroyers. This touched off a four game winning streak. The offensive bar- rage continued as the Spartans rolled up ninety-four points while holding the op- position to thirty-eight. The victims were Bayley-Ellard, who fell, 27-12, Pope John, defeated 24-18, and St. Bernards, trounced by a 39-8 margin. After two losses and a whitewashing of against undefeated Bridgewater-Raritan East. The Minutemen, who had trampled every opponent previously, ran into a stone wall when they encountered the gal- lant men of Fraunheim. East opened up an 8-0 lead during the first half, but in the third period the home team bounced back, scoring a touchdown to narrow the gap to 8-6. The Spartan drive was spearheaded by the combina- tion of Kevin Murphy's passing, Joseph Moffett's receiving, and brilliant running by Philip Stafford, who climaxed the drive with a nine yard touchdown jaunt. The visitors were held at bay until the closing minutes of the game when they recorded another eight points to put the contest out of reach for a 16-6 triumph. As a result of the team's fine record eight members were chosen to various all- star berths.
