Science Club Sub-divided into four special groups this year, the Ions Club supplied vast areas for experimentation in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, and rock- etry. The annual Science Fair objectified imagination together with hours of thought, planning, and research. Sister Mary Avila, I.H.M., Sister Cyrcnia Marie, I.H.M., and Mr. Fred Moderski, co-directors, sustained the enthusiasm of the members through pitfalls and frustra- 51? tions. President Stephen Bocckino held a meeting with fellow officers Chester Van Tyne, Michael Sabo, and Cassandra Garay in antici- pation of the Science Fair. fy:- Preparing for a math contest, seniors Michael Kabo, Bonnie Saller, Roberta Tehan, Rena Bouchal, Susan Duffy, and Caroline Corona diligently worked permutation problems. Patrick Kearney and Regina Wurst demonstrated the process of solving complex frac- tions for other juniors. 73 athematics Club Under the guidance of Sister Miriam Clare, l.H.M., and Mr. Victor Dudka, the mathematicians improved problem solving technique and competed in math contests with Piscataway, Bridgewater, and North Plainfield. Club members, hosting the competition for the first time, welcomed fellow wizards to Immaculata. Opened only to juniors and seniors, Numbers Anonymous afforded a testing ground for the budding potential of its members. Higher college board scores and math marks were just some of the immediate rewards as the calculators began manipulating square roots and angles with ease.

Cheerleaders promulgated the edict, This is the year of the Spartans, at the first pep rally of the season. y 'Min ,Vi rx ig? if 'Jn' with Juli' X Q 1 vi in ,aah Rallies added the extra push needed for the hrs! season victory over Pope John XXIII. Pep allies Varsity and Junior Varsity Cheerleaders, amid spirit and enthusiasm, executed precision routines and peppy drills. Cheers, applause, and gaiety of the students spurred the team on to victory and eased the pain of defeat. Pep rallies never failed to inspire the senior boys for skit material as they became everyone from cheer- leaders to opponents. Realizing that the student body supported them, the squad coupled spirit with athletic abilities to conquer all odds. Co-Captain Joseph Kelly charged through the Spartan emblem leading the way for his teammates. 72

Under the moderation of Sister Loretta Margaret, I.H.M., the Latin Club served to broaden the students' knowledge of life in Rome where Latin was first estab- lished. The classicists reenacted a Saturnalia, petition- ing the gods and goddesses of Mt. Olympus, just as the Romans did during this week-long feast. French pen-pals gave Immaculatans the opportunity to inquire into the lives and customs of teenagers in France. Under the direction of Mrs. Gilberte Gurdal and Sister Mary Loreto, I.H.M., the students not only improved their French but also made friends thousands of miles away. Members of the Spanish Club donned jacket emblems this year for the first time. Directed by Sister Helen Marita, I.H.M., and Sister Maureen Therese, I.H.M., the students devoted much of their spare time to the tutoring of local Puerto Rican children in thefunda- mentals of English, while instilling in them a pride for their Spanish culture. Sophomores carefully studied the word list while preparing to take the Nationwide Latin Examination. Language Clubs After receiving their first letters from Europe members of the French Correspondence Club Michael Sabo, Rena Bouchal, Steven Phillips, Diane Blakeslee, and Mark Kolb related in- teresting tidbits of information. 5 mf Spanish II classes displayed their creativity through posters depicting some phase of old world heritage. 74
