Jo Ellen Maciejewski delivered an extemporaneous speech on the rights of democracy before her audience, Patricia Rascher and Susan Wachdorf. Forensics and Debate Under thc co-direction of Sister Loretta Margaret, I.H.M., and Sister Brigid Maureen, I.H.M., the untested speakers wrote and delivered their ma- terial. David Ceponis, awarded second place in the American Legion Oratorical Contest, acquired confidence from this experience. The apprentice debaters, after hours of research, held meets at Immaculata, St. Josephis, and St. Mary's. The entire year's work readied the students for the Spring Tournament in Lincroft. Oflieers Kathleen Eckert, John Meehan, Kathleen Johnson, and Eileen Cahill convened to plan the meeting which featured Mr. Brown, their past modera- tor, as guest speaker. 61 Debating Lowering the Voting Age to Eighteen provoked an interesting discussion and many dissenting opinions between af- firmative Chester Van Tyne and negative Michael Sabo. ll ill' 'l lg. Future Teachers of America A nation-wide organization, the Fu- ture Teachers of America Club, encour- aged the students to pursue the reward- ing career of the teacher. Co-directors Miss Nancy Geleta and Mr. Philip Chalupa informed the prospective teach- ers of the situations confronting the in- experienced instructor. Mr. Bernard Duffy, Assistant Dean of Education at Seton Hall University, ad- dressed the club in November. He in- formed the members of the need for teachers in America and the importance of higher education.
