The agile female players concentrated on becoming skilled at ball- handling, passing, and rebounding. With energy and vitality the girls worked earn- estly towards victories over many high- ranking area teams, including Bridge- water-Raritan East. Both a winning sea- son and experiences in competition and fair play compensated for all the months of strained muscles and bruised elbows.

Coach, Joseph l'Arnie Poplowski, gave useful tips, such as pitching and obtaining greater dis- tance on drives, to the players which proved very beneficial in the heat of contest. With most of the matches played at Green Knoll Golf Course, the Spartans determined to show their talents, especially against arch-rivals, Somerville and Bridgewater-Raritan West High Schools. By adding Union Catholic High School to the schedule, the squad gained experience as well as pleasure. Although the school benefits from their work, it is certain that those who participated gained much more. With a Marine Physi- cal Fitness Award as the goal, calisthen- ics, weight-lifting, and wrestling aided the boys in acquiring the stamina needed for this exacting test. Encouraged by the feats of last year's team, who ranked first place in the Parochial School Division and sixth place in New Jersey, the squad worked earnestly through March and April to outdo the previous Immaculata record.
