Tasting the first bit of high school sports success, the Varsity hopefuls learned the meaning of one hun- dred percent effort in several close bouts with B.R.H.S. East, Middlesex, and a decisive romp over cross-town rivals, Somerville. Led by Coach Richard Spangler, the frosh achieved both skill on the court and a determined incentive for victory. With the novelty of high school competition over, the underclassmen stars planned to concen- trate on developing their natural athletic talents. Junior Varsity Basketball An impressive asset to the Athletic Department this year, the Junior Varsity Team came into the spotlight as the most successful of the three Immaculata basketball squads. Un- der the diligent direction of Coach Joseph Poplowski, the Spartan contingent advanced from match to match, improv- ing on both technique and record. The addition of Watchung Hills, Holy Trinity, and Union Catholic to their schedule broadened the squad's competitive experience. Making practical use of emphasized techniques and plays, the men gained the needed momentum to carry through a tough season. Back Row: Joseph Kelly, Michael Murphy, Philip Stafford, Joseph Trosky, Charles Kline, Arthur Wegner, Gerald Dallessio, Coach Richard Spangler. Under the constant scrutiny of Head Coach, Richard Spangler, the Varsity Baseball players emerged with improved hitting and pitching records. In the past, the team produced some All-County and All-Area players, and the big nine of this year proved just as versatile. The club aimed at surpassing last year's record, broadening its scope with the addition of Bayley-Ellard to the schedule and weeding out the shortcom- ings of previous seasons. With these goals in mind, the members of the 1969 line- up succeeded in putting some polish on their style. Coach Spangler alerted the base-runners to a hit and run play. 130
