We Present the . . 1961 IMMACULATA Designed and Edited by the Journalism Staff of IMMACULATA HIGH SCHOOL, Detroit 21 Conducted by the SISTERS, SERVANTS OF THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY X Q 0 'X Monroe, Michigan When I would know thee . . . my thought looks Upon thy well-made choice of friends and books. -Ben Jonson: Epigram 86. From Library to Lady Some weeks ago a friend of our school stopped at the local library to have his card renewed. Upon noting his address the librarian asked him if on his way home he would deliver a little red envelope to a certain young lady in his vicinity. When he willingly agreed to grant the small request, the librarian commented that the student in question would be most relieved. Since his experience proved to be a singular one las far as our readers are concernedj, we relay his story exactly as he told it to us. When the librarian turned over to me the bulging, well-worn red envelope held together by a bit of black velvet ribbon--I noted with interest the fancy letters in one corner: If this precious document gets lost, strayed, or stolen- will the finder please return the same to me. Gratefully- Gladly I set out for the given address. I was met at the door of her home by the girI's mother who explained that her daughter was not yet home from school. I expect her in at any moment, she said. WouId you care to wait? Oh definitely, I responded, and then hastily added- that is, if you don't mind. By way of reply I was led to a small but bright room off the center hall. This cubicle, the mother commented, is my daughter's private library and study. Intrigued I entered the sanctum. In cheerful disorder about the room were books, books of all kinds--yearbooks and textbooks, reference books to new words, good manners, beauty hints and recipesg fiction and non-fiction: plus a crammed scrapbook and a dog-eared autograph album. Knowing that book choices can reveal an individuaI's personality, I de- cided upon a sneak preview of the young lady I hoped to meet. As for my observations-observations about the young lady's school, her studies, activi- ties and interests, friends and classmates-I am happy to share these with you. Believing that his comments will be of interest to all of our readers, we now let his discoveries speak for themselves in the pages of our T961 IMMACULATA. tWith apologies to Joseph Addison. On and about her desk, in organized confusion, lay the makings of a school year- book. Nearby were several editions of other years, the tone and size of which, sug- gested to me an all girls' high school. From the blue and white covers plus the title, lmmaculata, I further surmised that it must be a Catholic school - one dedicated and devoted to our Blessed Mother. A closer glance at one of the pictures on her desk, one showing a large group of teenage girls gathered about an outdoor shrine of the Virgin, told me that I had guessed correctly. Physics students Mary Mason, Donna Treshnewsky, Diane Leslie, and Mary Grace Dunlop pepper Dr. John Kabara with questions. Mbovel Enter: MacNamara's Band that helped to create all the fun and excitement of that riotous assembly announcing the kick-off of the Mother's Guild Project. KBelowt Now for the earphones! Obligingly, Sister Marie Chantal assisted by Anita Sheppard, Marlene Jarvis, and Judy Sorrentino initiate a neophyte to the wonders ofthe language lab. At Noon Hour Communion Elizabeth Dunlop, Bernita Holahan, Jeanne Mur- phy, and Constance Mesner are among those who realize the source of all l,H. unity--Christ! Thi I lmmaculata! Enter upon a girl's world. But take this as fair warning--chances are that you will be infected with that contagious disease, the l.H. spirit. Do not worry, however, for it isn't fatal. Let's diagnose this curious malady. Take any girl las long as she is an l.H. girlj and observe her to see tangible signs of the spirit. You can meet her in the corridor . . . crisp white blouse and blue skirt . . . white socks and her blue and white saddle shoes . . , a load of books in her arms and a man-sized satchel lit's her pursel dangling from her arm. Take a quick look for you will not see her long. In a moment she will be off-off to a student council meeting, an independent study project, the cafeteria for a bite of breakfast after early Mass and Communion, to her homeroom to find out if anybody got the answer to problem three, or off to an early morning gabfest. One sure thing is wherever she goes you will find her enthusiastic, able, and eager, and whatever she does--whether it is praying, studying, working, or just having fun- it will be accomplished with that typical l.H. spirit-that wonderful spirit of togetherness. iii III '- ll Ill ll 'E' A Z ' I 10, Q - ,iysxfitla X 1'-K 121 M Girls! The Language Laboratory recently installed at l.H. follows an entirely new teaching concept. In her own booth, a student A dials the lesson she wishes to hear. lf she V needs help she simply flashes her signal, A and her teacher by flicking a switch on the master console can speak directly to her without disturbing the other students. Among its many advantages, the laboratory enabels a student to listen to correct pronunciation and fluent conversation instead of forcing her to listen Kas formerlyl to the halting pronunciation of her fellow classmates. When the lesson is over she can have her own voice recorded and hear both the master program and her own voice respond- ing to it. Sister Clotilda records a French broadcast by Seniors Anita Sheppard, Diane Davidson, Kathy Nicholson, Mary .lo Mclntosh, Mary Cunningham, Catherine Agnew, Judy Sorrentino, Marlene Jarvis, and Barbara Taylor by way of introducing parents and friends to novel features of the new language laboratory. f.. OFFICERS: Martha Thebolt, Sergeant-at-Arms, Julie Demery, Treas- urer, .Iudy MacMaster, President, Miss Sally Sessions, Director, Donna Long, Vice-President, and Jennifer Parks, Sec- retary. Friendly Competition High Standards In Iine for the coveted St. Sebastian Award of T967 are: lbackl Jan Wisner, Donna Long, Kathy Nicholson, Katie McGraiI, Mar- tha Thebolt. ltrontl Jennifer Parks, Charlotte Beck, Cathy Reiss, and Judy MacMoster. WHAT DOES THE G.A.A. MEAN TO AN I.H. GIRL? The G.A.A. means many things to an Immaculata student. To the officers and the members of the G.A.A. Board, the title means first of all--RESPONSIBILITY! This group under the direction of Miss Sally Sessions, Athletic Director, assumes or- ganized leadership of all athletic activities. To active senior members, the G.A.A. signifies HIGH STAND- ARDS. Symbolic of this meaning is the Saint Sebastian Award announced at the close of each school year during the Annual Honors Assembly. To every I.H. girl whether on a team or on the cheering side- lines, the G.A.A. typifies FRIENDLY COMPETITION. To win a game is important to her, but far more important is to win or to lose like a good sport. Since the G.A.A. intramural sports program is open to all students, it offers to any girl who desires it a ROUNDED DE- VELOPMENT. She may balance a heavy scholastic and cul- tural program with a wise choice of athletic activities. Included in the annual intramural program are the seasonal sports of archery, badminton, volleyball, swimming, softball, and tennis. To an lmaculata spectator, the G.A.A. typifies TEAMWORK, for in addition to physical agility a team-member learns to think quickly, to solve problems, and to submerge her own desire for glory to the glory of her team and of her school. She de- velops, moreover, the personal ability to follow directions under all kinds of conditions and circumstances. To both spectator and team-member the G.A.A. spells FUN and EXCITEMENT. Thus the G.A.A. means many things to many persons. Throughout her four years at I.H. a girl learns much through this association. After graduation she may forget the rules of baseball or basketball, she may forget her school's cheers, but we hope she will never forget the G.A.A. ever-timely reminder -there's no sport like a good sport. 36 Physical Fitness Rounded Development ARCHERY PRACTICE: Mary Learmont, Maureen McGrail, Linda I i Knoth, Ann Nicholson, and Kathy Wendt. Through the program of religious activities an I.H. girl finds constant reminders that she is a Child of God, a member of the nobility, a human being gifted not only with powers of mind and of body, but with the supernatural power of grace. At Immaculata she learns that religion is not mere- ly a matter of a forty-minute class every day, nor a consoling devotion for an hour on Sunday, but a strong personal link between herself and God- the link which runs all through her life with a defi- nite set of principles and spiritual sanctions that reach into eternity. 1 I I I XE PRAYER IS A POWERFUL PART OF HER LIFE - U means of enabling her to love God better, to draw His blessing on her daily life, and to seek His help in the solution of her problems. Daughter Theresa Galvin using Camille Masterson as her patient, demon- strates the proper way to take blood pressure to Peggy Kummer and Susan Marsh. Although it has been said that typical sophomores suffer from Sophomoritis, an I.H. Sophomore is an exception to the rule. Throughout the day she dashes up the stairs and down the stairs, into a class and out of a class, and then - she's off to one of her multiple after-school activities. Caught be- tween freshmen daze ancl junior zeal, a sophomore nonchalantly goes her busy way -growing, learning, stumbling-but, always on the move! Here Come the Juniors One though about a junior usually brings a rush of adjectives to mind-varied adjec- tives, often contradictory but always interest- ing. Quick, alert, enthusiastic-a junior lives each moment as if it were a crisis. Deter- mined and self-reliant one minute, apprehen- sive and dismayed the next-a junior is a composite of opposites. Caught in the middle of high school life, she looks back with real regret at her jaunty and carefree life as a sophomore, but she also looks ahead with hopeful eagerness to her life as a senior. In the meantime, although she yearns to be as free as a feather in the breeze and as ac- tive as a windshield wiper on a rainy day- she settles down to the grindstone of study . . . and more study. Tests, themes, reviewing for College Boards, stepping up her reading skills, planning for the junior and senior ban- quet are a few of the activities that keep her anchored. Each junior is as individual as her own thumbprint, but all I.H. Juniors have at least one common characteristic-their zeal. Santa Barbara: Detroit 21 Our Spectator Concludes I was iust making a few final observations when the young lady herself entered. Upon my presenting her with the red envelope, her eyes danced a merry little jig. Thank you! Thank you a million times! She said this so fervently and so courteously that I was immedi- ately repaid for all my trouble. You see, she ex- plained, you have just saved my scholastic honors! She further explained that the little packet contained her research notes for a final important report. As she spoke I pieced together her whole personal- ity. She is every inch a charming bit of girlhood--a girl who is using to the fullest each minute of her teenage years into gracious womanhood. She is thoughtful, studious, efficient, with a merry zest for living, and a talent for detail. She is happiest when helping others, most convincing when voicing her deep spiritual con- victions. Each day she is coming closer to the beautiful pattern God had in mind when He created her. I am sure you have recognized her by now, but if you haven't, it is my great pleasure to present to you . . . MISS IMMACULATA OF 1961! ....,...TE 4-3918 .UN 2-9482 ,UN 4-9187 .UN 1-8367 Who is She?
