Text from Pages 1 - 76 of the 1965 volume:

The Class of1965 Atmosphere Accomplishment Activity All experience Is an arch. . . I am a part of all that I have met, Yet all experience is an arch Wherethrough gleams that Untraveled world, whose margin Fades for ever and for ever When I move. How dull it is to pause, To make an end, To rust unburnished, not To shine in use! As though to breathe were life. Life Piled on life were all too little, And of one to me little remains: But every hour is saved from that Eternal silence, something more, A bringer of new things, And vile it were for some three Suns to store and hoard myself, And this gray spirit yearning In desire to follow knowledge Like a sinking star Beyond the utmost bound of Human thought. . . We see the light in one, while in another it is clouded. There are new Thresholds To be crossed We remember the little things, and in remembering we have difficulty find- ing Words for our thoughts. We remember a mood, as the sun reflected on an open geometry book. We remember snatches of a song we sang in the chaotic peace of the lounge. We remember the elation our successes brought. It's strange how that joy dulled the memory of our failures. We remember the satisfaction that learning brought, and know that learning was not con- fined exclusively to books. We remember our first discovery that behind nameless faces were people. -36 Life is the big, the small, the bizarre, the orthodox. It seeks beauty where there is none and finds truth where none is sought. Mastery comes with drilling, from the frowns, the fidgets, the doodles in the margin. 37 A lectern is reassuringly SOl1d when you are called on to explain a complicated paragraph. Miss Von Wa1d's trademark adorns the desk. Seniors respond in a discussion of the film Potemkin. The modern history class listens as Miss O'Connor discusses the influence of national character on culture. me The art class at Immaculata offers senior art students the chance to express themselves through various media. The senior religion class looks over mimeographed study sheets passed out by Father Ebbecke. There comes a time during the year when the diagrams in the book seem to merge with the geometric patterns on the Hoor and with the abstractions in the chalk dust. The maze of human physiology is somewhat unraveled through lecture and graphic illustration. , a...W Light waves travel in straight linesg that is, when you are not attempting to determine their path through a refracting medium. 41 Concentrated effort is evident in the earnest expressions of our fellow amateurs. Antigone, as well as other Greek and Roman classics, come to life through the dramatic talents of the English Classes. As the bell rings, the two English classes merge in the hall, their minds still clinging to fragments of poetry and snatches of oratory. Those voices with perfect accents in drill after drill come to sound friendly. Sometimes the days seem to follow each other, unchanging, symmetrical. But then the work takes hold of you, and the time flies past. 43 The rare And fleeting Moments When beauty Pauses The inten partici Th t f expression pa sit tion Thinking sometimes, sometimes quietg laughing, but not always: concentrating, usuallyg contributing. Remember all the best Of our past. . ., And forget the rest. Allington Qs! The hope, anger, inspiration, frus- tration, and joy of the memory book staff is symbolized by Arapesh, our affectionate comforter. The memory book staff is not enthusiastic at the thought of another mix-up in the picture taking schedule. Two Gonzaga debaters forlornly ponder the calendar marking Friday the thirteenth, as they are soundly trounced by a shrewd IHS team. We are voioeless In the presence Uf realities . . . And I ask: of what Use is language . . . Masters Kay Toivanen whips the Forensics Club through another of its four-minute meetings. The successful completion of an edition evokes various reactions from staff members. Mary Ann Grimberg begins work on her next assignment and Mary Ann McCarthy contemplates the Guerin photographer while Dee Love collapses into a deep sleep. The plans made and the difficulties encountered pass with the fleeting time. It takes people-many people- to make a crowd. It takes people-many, interested people to make a seminar. fl511eu:::le:fn. is vz .Q f ., tw ,arg . 5 e P hh n t H ..., I shall discern What all the sages ofthe world Have died to learn.
