It was in September 1928, that the first group of students arrived at St. Joseph's Convent, on Clark Street, Buffalo, New York- the Motherhouse of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph. Here, on that memorable Sep- tember morn, Immaculata Academy had its humble beginning. In the meantime, the new Motherhouse in Hamburg, New York, was nearing completion. It was dedicated on November 1, 1928, by His Excellency, the Most Bev. Bishop William Turner. One wing of the new building was set aside for a school to be hence known as Immaculata Academy, which became affiliated with the University of the State of New York, in 1930. This Academy dif- fered from others in its purpose. It was to be the seat of learning for girls aspiring to the religious life in the community of the Franciscan Sisters. It continued as such for the next fifteen years. In 1943, due to many requests from Catholic parents of the neigh- boring village of Hamburg and vicinity, the first group of day students was admitted. Since then, the school was performing a double role of preparing for their life work, girls who will even- tually become religious, and girls who will take various positions among the laity. The ten-year period, 1943-1953, has been one of constant growth so that even the present facilities have proved entirely inadequate. November 2, 1952, therefore, saw the ground-breaking ceremony for the new lmmaculata Academy which is expected to be ready for occupancy in the fall of 1953. lmmaculata Academy now passes the milestone of twenty-five years. Short as this period may seem, nevertheless, the happy moments of its meritorious existence form shining beads in our silver rosary of memories. i St. Joseph Convent on Clark Street, in Buffalo,New York, V the former Motherhouse of the Franciscan Sisters of St. 9 Joseph as Well as the first lmmaculata Academy. lx Q E Yi E Q. 7 2 .. r 1 3 .li i 5 1 ,W PROPERTY UF Sister M Henry 1928 19 4 QAH URG HISTORICAL SOCIETY 4 V wiv l my it E A ' A9 ' F .
