PROPHECY Gwenn Ott, as usual being curious, wanted to learn where her classmates would be in ten years, so she headed for a Chinese tealeaf reader. The old Chinese crone brewed her pot of herbs, and told Gwenn, “I see a huge gambling casino in Reno, named Jerry’s Club. Jerry McLaughlin brought out Harold and is now known all over the world as the Moonlight Gambler. He dresses to fit the part, wearing black suits with a black string tie, and shaped side-burns and mustache. Everywhere he goes women follow him. His favorite dates’ theme is ‘It’s a ticklin me.’ A swish of the tea leaves and the scene shifts to Hollywood, where I see Larie Patterson and her finance Elvis Presley. Elvis has just given her a purple Cadillac to match her white and lavender ones. Larie is owner of the world’s most famous cosmetic concern. She recently bought out Elizabeth Arden, Helena Rubenstein, and the Revlon Co. Next I see six-star General Ray Maxwell. Ray is Commander of the Eastern Air-Borne Division. He has invented a flying tea cup, and is preparing to be the first man to fly to the moon. Another swish of the leaves and I see the dark green veldt of Africa and in its sultry depths, Mark Aberhamson and his bride Pat Teall. Pat and Mark are Missionaries and are trying to Christianize the Pygmies. Now the leaves take on a different pattern and show me Merle Fiek, President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Merle has astounded the scientific world with his great discovery of which came first, the chicken or the egg. He is married to Bertha and now has 12 children --as it’s cheaper by the dozen. New patterns appear and I see Dave Beck. Dave is now the President of the United States. He is a devoted Republican. Dave was so brilliant that they changed the law so that such a young man could be President. Florida sunshine floods the scene and I see Verda Rae Wagoner who is now the world’s formost veterinarian. She is preparing to remove the back molar from Clyde Beatty’s most ferocious lion. A turn of leaves and I see oil wells. With Gene Tuck in their midst. Gene is President4 of Lifirs Club, International, and a Texas oil TYPHOON. He leaves his 12 cars “Cadillacs and Lincolns’’in the garage and rides Trigger the III, whom he recently bought, over his vast miUion acre cattle ranch!!’’ There is a pause as she waits for the leaves to settle. Finally she looks at Gwenn and says: “I now see Ethel Calhoun. Ethel is married to Teddy and they are living on the salt flats of Utah. Since Teddy started a cactus farm they are sitting by the roadside selling cactus pie, cactus cakes, cactus jams and jellys, cactus candy, and last, but not least, potted cactus plants. The leaves start to shift and so they settle to show Lavonne Tuck, Lavonne is married to Bob and while on their honeymoon to Arabia, Lavonne was captured by an Arab band and was put into the Sheik’s harem. The poor Sheik realized his mistake and returned her to Bob. The Sheik is now recuperating in a private mental hospital. They believe he will recover, but he still breaks out with a rash when he hears a woman’s voice. Little did he know that Lavonne had won the International Marathon Speech Contest in ’58. Von and Bob are now living in Mollala. A swish of the leaves and I see old Imbler Hi with an ageing lady working on the Treasury books in the office. The picture comes clearer and I see it is Carolyn Bewley. She has received straight l’s for 10 years, and she is said to be the Validictorian for the graduating class of ’67, if she gets the’57 books balanced. Her graying fiance' is working on his 2nd. million and is waiting patiently for his bride-to-be. The reason for the long engagement is that Mrs. Bewley refuses to let her daughter marry without a diploma. The leaves change and I see Wayne Gorham. Wayne has bought out every grass seed company in Oregon. He is fabously rich; however, he is very thrifty. He has bought Weldon’s half of the green Plymouth and is still driving it. He spends his afternoons sitting under the stoop of his log cabin, smoking his corn-cob pipe. He hasn’t married because he believes he can’t afford it. But rumors say he owns half of the U.S. Mint. A new pattern forms and I see Gwenn Ott. Gwenn is married to Don and living in Siberia in a log house, furnished with her mother’s furniture. (Her mother and father are
