As Stars of Ilwaco High, the Seniors exit from the stage of learning of the Ilwaco High School in order to accomplish greater feats on the stage of HLife. We first faced the footlights as timid Extras. Our experience on the Stage of High School Life was furthered by becoming the Supporting Cast, and then we advanced as confident Understudies. To begin our role as Stars, we gave the Extras a hearty welcome and entertained them with a dance in their honor as is traditional here. Our actors were prominent in athletics and the actresses prominent in Pep Club and other organizations. On December 5 we presented our Senior Play, a melodrama, iiBertha, the Beautiful TypewritegGirYZ which was a great success. As spring drew near, bringing the Junior-Senior Banquet, we at last realized that we were soon to bid farewell to Ilwaco High School. However, before our career of high school life .came to an end, we were entertained at the Kiwanis Banquet and sponsored an elaborate Senior Ball that will be imprinted in our memory for many years. We made our curtain calls with Baccalaureate and Commencement Exercises. We, the Stars of 1947, withdraw from the stage with the hopes of even greater ovations in the future, but wishing good lines for the class of 1948. 'Ihe people are gathering. As we move a little closer we find the construction engineer to be none other than Wallace Woodham! We find Wallace speaking with the Mayor of Ilwaco. Just a minute now, the Mayor looks very familiar! Oh yes! Itis Maurice Graham, and he really is quite a distinguished looking gentle- man. But things aren,t going too well. Wefind that the program is about to start. Everyone is looking for Donella Crowley, as sheis going to Christen the boat. While waiting for her, lets look around the crowd and see who is here. Who are the three handsome gentlemen to our right? None other than Junior, Peanuts and Dean returned from California just for thls occasion. Junior is running a restaurant where he specializes in clam chowder. How different and novel of Junior to think of a thing like that! Peanuts is working in the toy departmenft of a large store, just having nothing but fun.a1 day, and Dean, well, it seems Dean 1511,13 domg quite as well as the others. He hasnt been sell- ing so many brushes lately, due to a broken toe. We hope when Dean returns to California, he will have learned to take his toe out of a door before its too late. . And who have we standing over here yelling, Pea corn, pop nuts, chewing water, soda gum? Its the old joker, Don McGuire. Now hereis a sight for sore eyes, Betty Sherwood with one, two, three, vtwo, four, fiye, six, five-well I must say Bettyis. having qulte a time with that family! As we approach her, we find that it isnit her family, but that sheis running a day nursery. Poor Betty, sheis still an old maid, but then she never did get along with men. Never fear, Betty, the right man will come along some day, andewell, well, it looks like the right one approaches. Gene Wright, you old rascalV, And what has Gene done for himself? Well, poor Geneis been kept so busy driving the school bus and worklng on his horse raneh in Oysterville that he doesnt seem to have too much time for social life. Whols this walking down the street? IYes sir, and happy they are! Itis Tim and Marllyn. It seems that Jack Williams sold out to Marllyn and that put Tim out of a job so he marrled Marilvn and hes now back cleaning the theatre; Just like old times. Now hereis a nice looking pair. Itis Paul and Lois. Theyive made quite a bit of money. I guess Paul finally learned to skate and theyire touring the world for the second time by popular demand of the public. Theyire figure skatlng in case anvone wants to know. . Almeda is going on the trip with them this time. She has a great comedy act, all about learning to skate backwards. . Hereis two of the biggest gossips 1n town. They work at the telephone office and know everything about everybody. Why, yes, its Mary Ann Siniluoto and Shirley Sell, and do my ears deceive me or did I hear them say, Johnny Meriwether is taking Mr. Mettlerls place at teaching next year? Its all rumor now, but no one can tell what will happen next. I should say they cant! Why right before me is J oan Whealdon, Roberta Leback, Ralphena Olsen and Connie COrwin, who have been out picking cranberries all day and Ralphena is mad because she had to quit work and lose all that money just to come to this launching. Connieis griping because her husband wont work and she has a paper route to worry about, besides the washing she,s taking in. She says she wouldnit mind at all if heid just roll the papers for her. Joan and Roberta donit mind their work, but they say that the walk from Chinook is rather long, so they think they,ll do some commercial fishing this season and get rich quicker. Whois this galloping along? Why its the famous Gerry Johnson, the girl who .made a record. She traveled across the United States and back in a year and one month on horseback. That one month was the month she spent in California teaching Peanuts to ride a real live horse. Now here comes a real car, one of the long streamlined affairs, a chauffeur and everything. Who is this person? Itis Juanita Wilson, who came clear from New York, whereis sheis been appearing at the Metropolitan Opera House just to entertain us with a favorite old song ttDuvre La Porte Richardo. As we look up in the air we see a helicopter about to descend. It finally landed, right on Don C hristiansenis barber shop. And who should come bounding down the barber pole, but Patsy Dalton. Now this makes Don mad, but since its such a special occasion he lets it go this time, but Patsy, how in the world are you ever going to go up the barber pole? , Well, here comes Betty Summers. Betty is really getting along fine. She,s retired .now. It seems that she was such a good waitress that she made her first million in tips, so she went to Portland where she spends her leisure hours composing recipe books. . We now see a doctor walking down the street and we find its Loah Heiser. She has become a brain surgeon, but thereis really not much need for that kind of work on the Peninsula so she spends her time picking oysters or digging clams. Its about time! Donella arrives on the scene. LATE, of course, but she says she just had to play that $10 game at the Embassy Bingo! Ard now the boats ready to be christened, but in all the hustle and bustle we forgot to say whom the boat belongs to. Thereis the Admiral himself. Admiral Ralph Haslam ready to take full charge of his vessel. Thus we had together once more the graduates of the class of q47 . NELLIE LUNK , DORIS The 'curtain of IHS parted, revealing 37 Juniors, who immediately took the lead by winning the Student Body Sales. We came second in the March of Dimes, and third in the magazine sales, with one of our classmen winning the free prize. In early November, we gave our farewell dance to the Seniors. The title we chose was ?Stairway to the Stars. We kept the school well entertained by giving skits and a dance in the gym. By the time March rolled around, we could be seen practicing for the play, uGhost Wanted , which was given Match 21. It seemed as if we would never settle down to memorizing parts agaln as the Junlor-Senior Banquet folloWed the play. Fmally school was over and we had our annual picnic. The curtain is closing for this year, and everyone will agree that the Juniors of 1947 gave a polished performance. So until the spotlight next reveals us as Seniors, the llStars of : 1948, we bid you all goodbye and hope to see you next year. Wncgeaduclied ; 1 c 2 First Row M. Braschuck, Baker, Christensen. ' Sophomaaed It appears that the Supporting Cast of 1947 can be expected to accomplish great things in medicine in the future if they continue to be as iihospital conscious as they have been this year. It is to be hoped that next year in their role as understudies, they will have an increase in their daily attendance at school and eliminate their appearance at the hospital. Both actors and actresses have shown ability and skill in athletics. Most of the actors took part in football, basketball, and track. Almost all the actresses earned their Big Iis. The Supporting Cast proved their sportsmanship and ability to go on in spite of failures When they lost the annual Student Body Ticket sale, and came back into the spotlight by giving a successful and long-remembered, all- school dance in honor of the Winning Understudies. -By their performances this year, it is certain that the Supporting Cast of 1947 Will go confidently on to the stage Which leads to stardom and become brilliant actors and actresses in their role of therUnderstudies of 1948. The Seniors were there, however, to help them find their way around the props. This continued throughout the first week. On the Friday night of that week, we forgot all the terrors of the past few days when the Stars gave a dance for us, and we now take time to thank them for it. We then realized that we were full-fledged members of the IHS cast. During the next few weeks, we settled down to the task of studying our script. We placed third in the Student Body Ticket Sale. We also took- an outstanding part in the Red Cross Drive and the March of Dimes. This first year of theatrical life in Ilwaco High has surely been a happy one, the curtains closing much too soon. We are looking forward to our next three years here. Please! Father Time, slow them down just a little bit! FRESHMEN OFFICERS: Elaine Noel, Trudy. This year, for the first time in many years, Ilwaco High School con- centrated its spotlight on a most diligent debating club. The teams, as noted above, were directed by Mr. Stanley Mettler. At the close of each debate Paul Kauttu gave a summary speech. iiWar With Russia is inevitable , and iiPeace is not Attainable in Our Time,,. were two of the controversial subjects heard by the Student Body. Open disEussion was enjoyed by the students as well as the faculty, each trying to proVe his point. . Surely a diligent and thoughtful. club such as this, twhich, by delving. into subjects so vitally concerning each and every one of us, has helped to make a ubrighter future J deserves the earnest support of every member of the cast. The Cast put out special issues for Thanksgiving, Christ- mas, April FoolIs Day and a graduation script for the Stars; The Publication Ball was given by the Golden I cast and proved a great success. The owner of the house, Mrs. Stormgay, has invited a certain Prov fessor DeVallan and Madam Zolga to help her find the Zombi of a drowned fisherman. Ginger and Gail Stormgay, the granddaughters of Granny Kate, have taken upon themselves, the job of getting rid of the Professor, hoping at the same time to cure Granny Kate forever, by hiring a ghost, Hugo Bromley. The telephone lines are cut, the boats are gone, and Bradshaw, the sheriff, is missing. All of these complications plus a monster, not Hugo Bromely, add much confusion to the plot. The only clue is a peculiar perfume which is always smelled every time the monster, is near. When they are all assembled in one room, Hatchet, a life-long friend and servant to Mrs. Stormgay reeks of this perfume. After confessing to the murder of Simon Gore and the attempt to murder Bradshaw, Hatcher is held by the Professor who is really an F. B. 1. agent. Hatchet has them in a tight spot iwhen he threatens to pull a secret lever and blow the place to atoms. He is trapped when he opens the secret panel and sees Hugo, mas- querading as the fisherman, Simon Gore, standing there. The Professor then confesses that he had sent the boats away and Granny Kate confesses her knowledge to the whole scheme. Ginger in the end gets her ghostll. First row: C. Olson, D. After a quick season of football, it looks as though in the future football seasons we are to witness some real gridiron talent. This is due to the size and experience of next year's Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors. After three weeks of training under Coach Stanley Mettler, we were ready to start the season. Our first game was with Naselle in the Fishbowl which we lost in a close game of 6-0. Next on our program we played the Astoria Fishermen at Astoria where we were downed 19-13. We then caught a bus to South Bend and came back defeated 1.3-0. Journeying to Valley, we were sent home beaten 34-19, after a fine display of talent. We played our second home game with the Raymond second team, and won over the much heavier tcgml23e0. This seemed to be our lucky weekend; the Ilwaco second team wrnmngioyer the Astoria second team 7-0. The South Bend Indians then paid a v1s1t to the Fishbowl leaving the Ilwaco Fishermen scalped at 19-6. Valley called 9n us, winning by a score of 27-0. Journeying to Naselle, we were defeated 1n our f1nal game of the season. ' r. th. x5 x 1M 0 $$x NON x First row: yMr. Mettler, Kauttu, J. Meriwether, Williams, H. Beckon, L. Johnson, Bittner, Wallin, Graham, Eberhardt, Cutting. Second row: Noonan, Wiegardt, Strand, Taft, B. Chrlstiansen, Meserve, C. Olson, Bacon. The basketball squad started off by performing in the annual jamboree. Our first game was with the Stars of the Sea and the teams were so well matched that overtime playing was needed to determine the winner. Ilwaco won by two points. In our game there, however, we lost 31 to 46. Other practice games played away from home were: Ilwaco vs. Astoria, 26 to 27; Ilwaco vs. Naselle, 29 to 43; Ilwaco vs. Winlock, 37 to 35 which required overtime; Ilwaco vs. Centralia 29 to 32. Those played at home: Ilwaco vs. Raymond, 26 to 19; Ilwaco vs. Astoria, 38 to 44; Ilwaco vs. Naselle, 32 to 36; Ilwaco vs. Winlock 27 to 28. One characteristic of our players which was noticed by all was their good sportsmanshlp. Whether we won or lost our team played through to the end to the best of their ability. The squad gave a fine performance this year and although they failed to prqduce the much-hoped-for championship, we are satisfied that their campalgn was a success. .wwm- : A. was...
