It seems like ages ago, diary, since I started to school, and the thought of ever becoming a senior seemed far away. To tell you the truth, though, school hasnlt been so bad after all em fact, as I look back over these twelve years I wouldnlt trade them for anything in the world. Just to keep my mind clear on dates and important events, diary, I think PM Write doum everything I do at Ilwaco High this year. I filled out my schedule today. It looks as though I am really going to burn some midnight oil this year, because IIm taking quite a few hard subljectsesuch as: Pre-Induction, Latin II, World History, Chemistry and American History. I still hope to turn out for football and basketball if my grades are high enough. I noticed several new teachers-I hope they won,t be too hard on me. Do you think IIll make it, diary? BILL OWENS Vice- President J OHN SLAGLE President snmon cuss Today I sit here thinking about the years Iive spent at Ilwaco High. When I came here as a Freshman, I meekly admired the SeniOrs and wondered whether my class could ever fill their place. I was rather timid and shy, but I had a lot of fun, and somehow I survived that first year to continue along the way to the top. As a Sophomore, I found that school held a lot of opportunities for me and my classmates. We did our best to prove ourselves successful in every undertaking. As a Junior, I was eager to take part in activities and prided myself on having attained the title IIUpperclassmen . My road was beset with many obstacles, but I ended the year with a feeling of achievement and of happy hours well spent.' Now, as a Senior, I begin to think of the future, and I more seriously tackle the problems which lie before me. 'According to tradition, we started the year with the Freshman Initiation, ' after which we welcomed them with a dance. Next, we wholeheartedly put forth our best efforts in making ourselves prominent in school life. Many Senior boys are sporting letterman sweaters as proof of their participation in football and basketball. Our girls boast membership in the Pep Club. It wasn't long before we chose our class rings, cards and announcements. Then one day the photographer came to school to take our pictures. It was then that I realized my high school career was drawing to a close. i On December 6, we presented our class play, iIAnne of Green Gables , which was a decided success. I enjoyed being a guest of honor at the Junior-iSenior Banquet. It was a superb affair, and I shall always treasure the memories of that happy evening. The last few weeks of school proved to be the most exciting of all. We were kept busy with preparations for the Senior Ball; our theme, iIThe Mystic Garden , was carried out on a grand scale. With a flurry we breezed through the Kiwanis Banquet, Baccalaureate, and Commencement. Thus, we mustpclose a chapter in our lives, as we bid farewell to our high schoo'l days. We wish much success to the class of '47. As I walked down the hall I heard the familiar sound of laughter and gaiety;, the Sophomores seemed eager to begin another year. Numbering forty-feur strong, they began to tackle all problems with a zest suggestive of their ability. They participated in the Student Body drive, the Red Cross dl'lve and the Magazme drive. They proved their scholastic ability by placing ten members in the Torch Honor SOCIety. I must confess, diary, the Sophomores have set an outstanding example in class and school spirit by their loyal attendance at the games and by taking part in pep assemblies. Not only that, but theyive given several dances which were a great success. I sincerely hope they continue to take part in school activities during the next two years. Looking at the list of class officers, it is easy to understand the reason for their success. Miss Bucurench is the class adviser, and Dobby Wiegardt is class president. None other than LeRoy Johnson holds the position of vice-president, and I've seen Beverly Trondsen busily making out secretarial reports. They are represented on the Student Council by Nellie Hanselman and Clark Olsen. Camera shy: Dobby Freshman Class First Row: Corine Sherwood, Damewood, Nan Olsen, Wilton, Fender, S. During the first week of school, I heard numerous complaints that life at Ilwaco High was not very pleasant. The Seniors, however, added a happy ending to the week by giving a dance which was enjoyed by all. Throughout the year, I watched the Freshmen take part in the Student Body Ticket drive, the Red Cross drive, and the March of Dimes; they really went to town on the Magazine contest. They presented a dance for the Seniors early in September, and at the end of the football season they honored the team with a dance. Miss Bergman is their adviser, and they elected Corine Sherwood as their president. Dale Ferry is vice-president and Gwen Nelson is secretary-treasurer. Don,t you think we look classy wearing blue and gold pins? A number of the Seniors earned permanent pins for having been on the honor roll throughout the four years. The requirements look rather steep, but perservance helps one maintain the standard. Twenty-four points earned during the first year, fifty by the end of the second year, and eighty by the end of the third year are the quali- fications to keep one in the society. For a four year pin, 110 points are needed. My pals, Tim Williams and John Meriwether, are president and vice- president, respectively. Roberta Leback is secretary-treasurer, and Mr. Peterson is our adviser. All of us are looking forward to having a greater numher of masculine members next year. The music department added another successful year to the Ct. 22 already well-established record. Under the direction of Miss Freda Bucurench, the Glee Club and the smaller groups carried on the high standard of music in their yearst activities. I heard the Glee Club sing on such occasions as the Armistice Day pro- gram on November 9, the Senior play on December 6, and the Junior play on March 15. Late in April the music department presented the HDarktown Follies, an enjoyable mnistrel show. The Sextet, the Mixed Quartet, the Trio, and the Duet also furnished music for various school assemblies. We were always eager to hear them perform. Second row: Bargquist, Jean Whealdon, Larson, Moffitt, Christie. Third row: Mrs. O'Connor, Northam, Slagle, Owens, Kirkman. Today, diary, I saw the senior class play, HAnne of Green D80. 6 Gablesii. It was a super production under the direction of Mrs. OiConnor. The story was about an orphan girl who went to the heme of Mathew and Marilla Cuthbert, a bachelor and his old maid sister. Under her hard exterior Marilla possessed a tender heart which she continually tried to conceal. The story revealed how Anne Shirley, in her life at Green Gables. won the admiration of all who knew her, and how she finally caused Marilla to iithaw outii. Her feud with Gilbert Blythe, the wealthiest boy in town: her attachment for her bosom friend, Diana Barry; and her relationship with Mrs. Rachel Lynde, a meddlesome gossip, with Josie Pye, a schoolmate, and with Mrs. Allan, the minister's wife were told in an interesting and fascinat- ing way. Jean Whealdon gave an excellent portrayal of Anne, the mis- chievous, adorable orphan. The play was a tremendous success, and I am certainly glad that I was fortunate enough to see it. M 5 iiEverybodyis Crazy , which was written by Jay Tobias. ar. 1 Friday, March 15, I went to see the Junior Class play, It was very good, and I certainly did my share of laughing. The plot centered around three nearly-broke college fellows who bought a summer hotel on notes, and had a whale of a good time doing it. The audig ence laughed throughout the entire play as they watched the trio meet up with Old Man Adversity and polish him off with much splendor. , Business was terriblee-so very bad that it became necessary to give the Inn a reputation as a haven for ghosts and the hiding place for an old miseris gold. The paying guests at the hotel included an old maid who dabbled in spiritualism; a widow who was just a bundle of nerves; a sleep-walking old Romeo, his always on-hand hypochondriac wife, and his daughter with gum-chewing propensities; a farmer-bachelor Who was subject to nightmares, and a cockney cook who was afraid of spooks. Rounding out the comedy team were Gladiola, the colored maid, and Jasper the bell hop. The Junior play was a success due to the splendid cooperation of the class members and the fine coaching by Mrs. OiConnor. CAST Herb .Stanley .................................................... She went into detail about the good-looking uniform she would be eligible to wear. A navy blue skirt and a V-necked sweater with the gold pep emblem. The girls really showed plenty of pep and they did their utmost to back the teammeven during the hopeless hours of football. Rain or shine, they always had a new routine. Patsy Wray and Aletha Moffitt, our peppy yell leaders, were full of Vim and Vigorethey made me yell myself hoarse more than once. Their appear ance was really smartethey wore white pleated skirts and white sweaters with the blue and gold emblem. Our friendly song queens, Bonnie Frankland and Deloris Oman, were super. The girls wore gold sweaters with blue and gold emblems, and gold pleated skirts. . At each game the girls invited the yell leaders of the rlval stlident body to lead our student body in a yell. This fostered a feeling of friendhriess.. I think the Pep Club this year has reached the goal for IWthh 1t has been striving, and I hope the girls continue with the same enthu31asm. N 2 In September my sister kept in trim by playing basketball after 017. school. She learned the art of shooting the ball through the net, and she tried her skill at knocking the ball over the net. November found her tumbllng gracefully on the mats in the gym. In May she took part in the annual Dance Drama. Participation in these sports has furnished my sister with a good time, as well as membership in the uBig I . The following girls have earned 1000 or more points in athletics and are entitled to wear the letterman sweater adorned with two stripes: Pauline Bargguist, Reda Bates, Sally Christie, Ethel Christensen, Donella Crowley, Loah Heiser, Cleo Kase, Mary Lou Larson, Roberta Leback, Aletha Moffitt, Ralphena Olsen, Harriet Patterson, Marilyn Simmons, Jean Whealdon, Joan Whealdon, Juanita Wilson, Patsy Wray. a Letterman's Club k X war First row: Don Christiansen, J. Fourth row: Kauttu, Eberhardt, Bill Chn'stensen, B. Smith, E. Frankland, K. Short. Camera shy: J. Wiegardt. When I attended the first meeting of the year, I found that NOV. 7 the Lettermen's club boasted a membership of thirty athletes-- mostly juniors and sophomores. President John Slagle led the meeting, and the other officers, Bud Kirkman, vice-president, and Tim Williams, secretary- treasurer, were giving their support. Several new resolutions were made. One provided for emblems to be put on the letter for the particular sport in which the letter was earned. Included in these are the football, the basketball, and the winged foot for track. The club also voted to order a special T-shirt with the emblem of a fish and Ilwaco Fishermen printed across the front. Mr. Mettler, our coach, advised us on all our difficult problems and helped us in many ways. First row: Williams, Owens, Marsh, K. Short, H. Becken, R. Meriwether, Siagle. Second row: I. McCoy, Mr. Mettler. By the scores of the past football season it doesn't look N av. 17 like the Ilwaco Fishermen had much to offer in the way of gridiron talent. The biggest reason for this was the fact that I was kept on the bench with an ingrown toe nail most of the season. After two weeks of spirited training given us by our coach. Stan Mettler. we journeyed to Naselle where we were defeated 31 to 6. Our next game was at home with Valley where a much heavier team beat us 39-0. At our annual game with the Astoria Fishermen we were again defeated 24-6, but Ilwaco played a very good game, scoring the first touch down. Following the Astoria game we went into a slump and were scalped by the South Bend Indians 60e6. Journeying to Valley we were beaten by the Vikings 200. A home game again, we found ourselves outclassed by South Bend t0 the tune of 27-0. Winding up the season with a home game in the Fish Bowl against Naselle we were dunked 33-7. After our practice games at the Jamboree and our Holiday Tournament we started our basketball season off by defeating Lebam 32-19, in a home game. Next we went to Naselle and won a close victory, 28-25. The Fisher- men soon discovered that all teams would not fall as easily as their first opponent. Traveling to South Bend, they defeated us 43-25. We beat the Lebam Loggers again to the tune of 39-21 on their own floor. The Naselle Comets journeyed to Ilwaco and beat us 28-26 in a thrilling game. The next game with Valley spelled disaster for our hopes for a top place in the league. The score stood 38-26 at the end of a hard fought game. To wind up our season, Sohth Bend beat us on our floor with an overtime score of 39-28. In the tournament play-offs, Ilwaco went down before South Bend 28-26, brushed aside Lebam 40-23, and came back to win against South Bend 28-21 for the third place trophy.
