FLASHBACK There were many parents and students disturbed about the new attendance policy. in order to raise the attendance, a new policy was formed, stating that if a student was absent in any one class 10 times or more lexcused or unexcusedy, the student would have to appear before an appeal committee composed of students, faculty, and administrators. The committee would decide whether the students had valid excuses for their absences, and whether they were to receive their grades for the class. Because of the controversy, the policy was discontinued, subject to review. As in every year, a number of fads came and went. A few big fads from 1981-82 were: ruffled blouses, french braids, knickers, and Rubiks cubes. Others include striped shirts, lzod shirts, and boat shoes. One of the fastest come and go fads of this year were little 4X4 stomper trucks. Freedom jam presented the first assembly of the school year. They gave a patriotic assembly during the day and a concert that night. Other assemblies were the Golden Nights, Connie and Carol, and the Scanners.

'82 IN REVIEW Once again terrorism and violence changed world politics. On October 6, 1981, America faced distress caused by the death of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. During a military parade in Cairo, a young lieutenant stepped forward and tossed a grenade into the crowd of spectators seated with President Sadat. The Egyptian president, who with Presidents jimmy Carter of the United States and Menachem Begin of Israel had ended the Israeli-Egyptian war with the Camp David peace talks, was dead. During the course of the year, American military officials were the target of bombings in West Germany and assassinations in France. General james Dozier was kidnapped in December by the Red Brigade in Italy. He was finally released by a rescue attempt on january 28, 1982, the only kidnap victim ever to be rescued alive from this Italian terrorist group. Argentina precipitated an international crisis when they claimed ownership of the Falkland Islands in South America. The claim dated back to the 19th century when the South American Country was liberated from Spanish rule. Great Britian has had control of the Falklands since early in the 1800's. When the U.S.S.R. backed Argentina and the U.S. backed Great Britain, the entire world became involved. A record-setting cold front struck the mid-west United States on Sunday, january 10. Chicago, Illinois, Opp' if wt' 'F New 1113 wavesij r ...,?, in N A fr., hit a new record of -260, the lowest temperature ever recorded in Chicago's history.
