FLASHBACK There were many parents and students disturbed about the new attendance policy. in order to raise the attendance, a new policy was formed, stating that if a student was absent in any one class 10 times or more lexcused or unexcusedy, the student would have to appear before an appeal committee composed of students, faculty, and administrators. The committee would decide whether the students had valid excuses for their absences, and whether they were to receive their grades for the class. Because of the controversy, the policy was discontinued, subject to review. As in every year, a number of fads came and went. A few big fads from 1981-82 were: ruffled blouses, french braids, knickers, and Rubiks cubes. Others include striped shirts, lzod shirts, and boat shoes. One of the fastest come and go fads of this year were little 4X4 stomper trucks. Freedom jam presented the first assembly of the school year. They gave a patriotic assembly during the day and a concert that night. Other assemblies were the Golden Nights, Connie and Carol, and the Scanners.

Mr. Bill Heckert, former high school principal, was named by the Board of Education to the position of Superintendent of Schools. On April 6, Mr. Vern Wilson was appointed as Scott City's new police chief. He took the place of Mr. Ralph Hayes who had been the police chief for over twelve years. In November, farmer Wayne Cryts from Puxico defied a court order and removed 31,000 bushels of soybeans from the bankrupt Ristine elevator near New Madrid. He was later arrested and brought to court on charges of illegally removing the grain. The trial came to national attention when the American Agricultural Movement supported Mr. Cryts in his defiance of what is considered to be an unfair bankruptcy law. Several area residents showed their support of Mr. Cryts by the display of yellow ribbons.
