Text from Pages 1 - 170 of the 1980 volume:

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die, a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted, A time to kill, and a time to heal, a time to break down, and a time to build up, A time to weep, and a time to laugh, a time to mourn, and a time to dance, A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together, a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing, A time to get, and a time to lose, a time to keep, and a time to cast away, A time to rend, and a time to sew, a time to keep silence, and a time to speak, A time to love, and a time to hate, a time of war, and a time of peace. The nation grieved when john Wayne, the western hero, lost his battle against cancer. Eleven teenagers were trampled to death while waiting in line to see the rock group Guess Who . Tragedy struck the New York Yankees when catcher, Thurman Munson was killed in an airplane crash. Lucille Ball's crazy friend and loyal sidekick, Vivian Vance, died at the age of 69. And finally, one of the nation's wealthiest men, Nelson D. Rockefeller, died in his office. As a school, lllmo-Scott City witnessed the addition of two new assets to the Business Department. The students, themselves, were caught up in the excitement that accompanies the arrival of a baby. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Andrews and Mr. and Mrs. Robert McCowan are the proud parents of Adam Moore Andrews and Michael Owen McCowan, who by the way took their time getting here! After many months of heated debate, Illmo and Scott City were consolidated into one township. Gray's Landing, Riverside, Illmo-Scott City, and Newport were just a few of the proposed names of the new town. In a later election it was renamed Scott City. It was a relief after several months of living in a town with no name . Nineteen eighty and the progress that accompanied it proved to be the death of Illmo and the birth of a new Scott City. 1 J Y LSMIT 3 ,,..3 5 5 C e . g 5 A i 3 4 T 3, L... , .J . A TIME TO BUILD UP, The old two-story railroad depot in Illmo was torn down in March of this year. It was built in 1909 by the Cotton Belt Railroad and was used in the past as a Western Union office and for passenger and baggage service. The depot was replaced by a new, more adequate metal building. All that now remains of the landmark are a few scraps of lumber, rusty nails, and old memories. V241 , Ac, Q , s - ft X73 ,fQiQf34't xiiiilif' Scott City continued to grow and expand in 1980 as new buildings were popping up everywhere. New homes, like these pictured, were built by construction companies from the surrounding area. A I V 'gifts ,X N4 A , . . -. ia K is nsigqwx X, aw xii? Q ws TSS., K 5 K . Nineteen eighty was no exception. This year brought us: rabbit coats, rock concert T-shirts, hiking boots, wool skirts, cowboy hats, satin pants, straight leg jeans, clogs, blazer jackets, and charm necklaces. Disco was one fad considered to be on its way out. Rock concerts became a popular source of entertainment for I-SC students. STYX, Linda Ronstadt, Fleetwood Mac, and Jethro Tull were just a few. A variety of movies came to the area such as: The jerk, Kramer versus Kramer, American Gigilo, The Muppet Movie, The Rose, Chapter Two, Starting Over, Escape from Alcatraz, The Electric Horseman, Little Darlings, and A Coal Miner's Daughter. Bo Derek became the country's newest sex symbol with her performance in the movie 10'f. Miss Piggy, who made her movie debut in The Muppet Movie , was a close second. Iran talks anew of hostage transfer A TIME OF WAR A TIME CF PEACE. A small country in the Middle East dominated the news this year. All I-SC students, along with the rest of America, became very familiar with such words as: iran, the Shah, Khomeini, hostages, spies, militants, and sanctions. Every daily newspaper, every television newscast, and every radio broadcast contained information about the American hostages being held in Iran. The militants' unconditional demand was for the return of the Shah. Not only did the nation murmur and become restless, but also the students. Particularly when officials began discussing possibilities of a reinstatement of the draft for both men and women. President Carter not only imposed economic sanctions upon iran, in April he also demanded a boycott of the 1980 summer Olympics. At first he was opposed by the athletes but eventually the U.S. Olympic Committee House of Delegates upheld his decision. A TIME T0 . . . . . . REMEMBER leg-,, RLD ANAI' ,F , Aix Jllll ill!! Along with the other established traditions, such as valograms, Christmas stockings, and the Big Brother-Big Sister program, NHS also added a new project to its list. ln November, each member drew from a hat the name of hisfher new secret teacher. Some members drew twice. Each NHS member was responsible for doing something thoughtful for their teacher once a month, in an effort to show their appreciation. It could be a card, flower, gift, or whatever. The only catch was that it must remain a secret. In May, the secret pals revealed their identity to the teachers. . N. f wi f ix .. This year the ceremony was held at the Port Cape restaurant on May 14th. Dr. H. O. Grauel was guest speaker for the fourth year in a row. He spoke on learning by experience . Little brothers and sisters presented the honor cords and collars to their big brothers and sisters. As usual, it was a sad farewell. It was made even sadder by the fact that this was sponsor, Sonja Reimann's last year at I-SC. No one was more sorry to see her go than her NHS'ers . 1. This year's staff worked fast and furiously to get the yearbook completed. Since the school year ended early, we had to wait for pictures of several events. We finished the 1980 MEMORIES late in May - after school was out. This is the result of all that work. We've made a photograph album of the special memories of 1980 for you to look back on and to keep. We hope it shows you how you are, were, and perhaps will be. Ten years from now you can look back and laugh at the funny hair styles, weird clothes, and crazy friends. We also hope that we've captured some very special memories for you. Nineteen hundred eighty has been a good year, and now is the time to remember. A nature hike at Trail of Tears followed by a cookout provided fun, entertainment, and education for all. We had a spooky time at our Halloween party at Lake Twappity. While the rest of the students ate a school lunch, we feasted on turkey, pumpkin pie and homemade bread on Thanksgiving. Our Christmas included: a supper at Mr. Sadler's house, caroling, and distributing homemade decoupages to patients in area hospitals. Dr. Popham from SEMO University visited us and gave a lecture entitled, A Chemist - A What? We took a tour of the Physics Dept. at SEMO and were shown an interesting and informative time by Dr. Soellner. . We commemorated Earth Day by presenting two films, Air Pollution and Land Pollution. The fans were not disappointed by their team this year. The baseball Rams made it to the sectional finals where their hopes of making it to the State playoffs were cut short by the Bismarck team. However, the fans are still applauding their players. Our season's record was 6 and 5. At least we won more than we lost. We opened with a win over East Prairie. Next, we defeated New Madrid. We beat Oak Ridge and University High but lost to Leopold and Chaffee. October 18 chalked up another win for us over Meadow Heights after falling to Central. Drawing Perryville for the District Tourney was sad for us as they had defeated us before. Our last game against East Prairie lwhich we would have won, of coursel had to be cancelled as it was scheduled for the same night as the District Tourney at Fredericktown. The j.V. 1979 Volleyball season was good from the point of view that it was a winning season, but disappointing in that the ladies lost to inferior teams. However, this experience should serve us all in good stead for future seasons which will be much more successful. Coach Halter Hi, Mom! ,An WITH NEW COACH This past season was my most successful year as a coach and the winnin- gest record for any ISC Girls Basketball team. In fact, they had the best record of any sport so far this year, 8-5. The girls lost 3 games by a nar- row margin which could have been won but otherwise played well most of the year. They progressed in offense and defense throughout the year as a team and this despite the movement of some personnel to part-time and full time Varsity play. These girls are very good in the fundamentals and I predict an excellent season for the team next year on the Varsity. They are a hard-working and talented group of ladies and deserve the success they have achieved. Coach Waltrip l Defense! K I As the year approaches its end, we seniors find ourselves caught in a bitter struggle between two worlds, often not knowing in which we wish to live. We must choose between the world of yesteryear or the world of the future. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. The world of yesterday offers us securities, fond memories, and the love and acceptance of dear friends. The world of tomorrow beckons us to untold adventures, challenges, and promises of a successful life. If we choose to stay and live in the past, our growth will be stunted. On the other hand, our wings often feel far too weak to attempt to leave. The choice is not ours, however. We must finish the race we began many years ago. The future will hold many times for all of us. But now we must face the time to grow, the time to let go, and the time to say goodbye . A special thank you goes to the following people for their contributions to the yearbook: Mr. Markhart for the use of his darkroom equipment, Mrs. McCowan, Miss Obermiller, Mrs. Heckert and Mrs. Hahn who all allowed me out of their classes frequently to work on the yearbook, Leita Lillibridge and her telephone service , and to Mom Nothdurft, for giving us not only an education, but also a part of herself.
