THE ILLMAN SCHOOL 'Gbe Awful Fate 0 4 Stzzdiom Senior QTWAS the night before examinations-Mary sat, huddled up in a chair, before the fitful glow of a dying fire. A bridge lamp cast a pool of light around her, illuminat- ing the pages of a huge notebook which she was earnestly memorizing. The ominous quiet of the room was broken only by the regular turning of leaves and the faint hiss of the fire. lf two cortical areas are stimulated at the same time or in immediate succession - she repeated it for the twentieth time. Suddenly the fire seemed to Hume up more brightly-the room was filled with figures -familiar figures-they were talking to her. l We must hurry now, said a dark-haired chubby little person. We have so much work to do and l don't know where the time has gone. ' A I know, but it's just the day for a good game of golff' replied a smiling gentleman. What would Dewey say? asked a little silver-haired lady. My secretary will please note that, directed a gentleman with twinkling eyes. A smartly dressed figure stepped forward- That would be valuable for your cur- riculum bookf' X . Those sitting on the back row are also in the classf' said an harassed gentleman. as Yes-it would be wise, commented a cheerful voice. Let's have a good, snappy roll call, called out the tiniest person of all. 'fHere's a cute little disease, said a teasing voice. as I yike Yuyu, a lady with vivid hair spoke up. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog, remarked an exceedingly tall young man, lingering a spotless tie. Ninety days-darling! exclaimed a little blonde person with a half smile. Oh! gasped Mary, ls That the Human Thing To Dol She woke with a start-- Well,'l she murmured, after that, I guess I'll go to bed. Page Seventy-four

THE SPAN-1932 q3ellncltz, ON TUESDAY evening, March 15. lQ32, the stage was once more set for the annual production of The Illman Playmakers. The place this year was the Rose Room of the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel and the play Belinda-An April Folly, by A. A. Milne. lt was presented in three acts, the action taking place in Belinda's country-house in Devonshire. U Mary Frances Butler was especially engaging as the Hirtatious Belinda, in contrast with her equally engaging but matter-of-fact daughter, Delia, portrayed by Grace Gar- linger. The entire cast gave a remarkably well-trained performance. The play was directed by Louise Crownover MacMillang the stage setting was by Helen Bertolette. A dance followed the play, the cast joining the audience for several honurs of gayety and music-a charming end to an evening which will long be remembered by all. THE SPAN-1932 'Giro River T HAS its beginning in many springs of bubbling, crystal clear water, this river which in the metamorphosis of its existence changes from a thing of beauty to a thing of foulness and ugliness. It is DOI a large nor a swift nor even a clear deep river but it gives the effect of a beautiful peace as it Hows almost imperceptibly along. The upper valley is not landscaped nor are there natural terraces and forests which so often are the means of lending enchantment to waterways. There are no gorgeously colored rocks or turbulent, splashing falls to startle one with their beauty because the sole loveliness of this spot lies in its almost unnatural aspect of cleanliness and sparkling freshness. The banks give the appearance of having been recently swept and dusted and the river seems to leave in its wake the, order, peace, healing power and utter simplicity which one feels upon entering a hospital. At a point farther down along this same valley one comes upon another river, no, it is the same one, but so changed as to be almost unrecognizable. The characteristics of the river and its surroundings at this point are the direct antithesis of the waters as they were in the upper valley. This change is easily comparable to the change in a human being who has grown from a beautiful and lovable baby to a hideous, mysterious, foul and deceitful monster. ln both cases the ultimate wrong has been wrought by the unthinking, careless, selhshness of human beings who call themselves respectable. The river seems here to spread ugliness and destruction in every direction. Its apparently thick surface seems to draw to it and suck in the refuse and filth of the whole city. Even the lights at night which usually add an artificial beauty to everything are dimmed by the sordidness of this deep blackness. The moon and stars although not devoid of a mellowing quality are here unable to cast the spell of their magic in its fullest extent. A thing of beauty is a joy forever, but like a beautiful woman ravaged by age the loveliness of it can be preserved only in the mind of the beholder. Each time the once beautiful thing is seen in the fulfilment of its ugliness, the image fades a little further until the thing of the past is gone and only the present remains. NANCY Gitoswtrn.
