Illiopolis High School Our Recipe . Who Are “They?” By Pam Stout There are some people that are so fine. They happen to be yours, and they happen to be mine. They help us through life With strength and strife, Although, sometimes 1 wonder If they should even try. They back us up in our sports, music, or whatever, To make sure we do our best or even better. Their job is not an easy one to do, As we try them through and through, they say our punishments are for our own good. But they seem to change us into a bad mood. It seems when the punishment Is all over, We soon recover, only to discover, this is part of their love. And who are they, it should be apparent. ' 'They'1 are none other than our own parents. Well, we finally made it to our senior year. That could be called an accomplishment for us! ! Because at times we were known as the worst class to ever reach the halls of old 1HS. But after a little straightening out, we finally started to shape up and work together. We may not have placed with our floats all four years, but we certainly tried. Throughout the years we have thought of many ideas for raising money to help us to reach our goal of a trip to Florida. We ventured into many different fund raising schemes some succeeding and others not. But despite our reputation for expensive watered -down cokes at the football and basketball games this year and for the stale high priced candy in the previous years, we have trudged onward for better or for worse, to raise that money! ! Our team spirit may have staggered down a few steps, but we still rallied back to finally end up as a WHOLE CLASS. Ruling when the seniors go to Florida ... Working hard on a first place float and being second to the sophomores ... The junior class of '79 have many talents and work for many goals. We have a few juniors who excel in sports, achieving player of the week twice in basketball and a few guys who made all-conf. football. We also had 3 ju- niors starting varsity volleyball. Aside from our pop com machine being condemned by the State Board of Health, our money making projects all did well. We sold candy at games along with home baked goods. We'll get to Florida one way or another! The Junior class officers this year are: Pres. : Tia Lyon; Vice Pres. : Jim Lee; Secretary: Christy Reilly; and Treas. : Julie Hohenstein. Our fantastic movable clock won first place against the other floats. We were very active in sports, having class- mates on all varsity squads. Now we can walk down the hall with our head held high; as proud sophomores we have out- lived our 1 'munchkin stage''. The great class of '80 is on its way to the top. The theme of our float was 1 'We'll de- flate 'em and float away with a Victory''. Even though it didn't place, we had a lot of fun building it. We raised money by selling Pirate stickers during the basketball season. We would like to thank our sponsors, Mrs. Freeman and Mr. Smalling, for bringing us through our first year at 1CHS. An unexpected overwhelming victory against undefeated Blue Mound and a win in a practice game with Riverton contributed to their success. The J.V. closed out the season with a 6-4 record. Although the girls were defeated in their second game in district, they feel very proud of their accom- plishments in the past three years. The team will be losing five seniors; Rita Lamb, Penny Young, Janet Leonard, Carol Bruns, and Sandy Wilson; however, we are looking to achieve higher goals next year. A big thanks to the Booster Club for the new equipment. Congratulations to Mrs. Freeman and the girls for a good season. We didn't have too many activities this year, except for the annual induction ceremony. In this ceremony one senior, one junior, and nine sophomores were in- ducted . 51 52 Compliments of H. POST SONS - Decatur The 1977-78 school year brought many new changing ideas including the reinstate- ment of the Illiopolis Student Council. After much cam- paigning and the final election speech, Bill Bliler and Doug Ford were the victors. Other members obtained their posi- tions in an election by their fellow classmates. The council was given Homecoming responsibilities. Although we ran into some mi- nor problems, Homecoming was an overall success. We kept busy by selling popcorn at ball- games and changing the an- nouncement board. Our most successful activity was the don- key basketball game. A large turnout saw us whip Niantic. We had a student council ex- change with Blue Mound in the spring. The final action of the council was to order a welcome mat for the school. Remember, 1 'Can we have a play? It's audition time. Wow, I got a part! and I'm scared.'' As the lights go down, we see and hear back stage, shakey hands, trembling voices, upset stomachs, and ghost white faces. ' 'Will I remember my lines? , How does my make-up look? , Talk louder! , and Here we go! Along with all this nervousness and excitement we all experienced the thrill of victory in producing an excellent play and the agony of near defeat in seeing ice-cream and plants crash to the floor, mikes tumbling over, and a dancer sliding to her knees. Was it all worth it? The end-less hunting for costumes and never-ending practices? After seeing the audiences faces and hearing the applauses, we real- ized how much we had accomplished. Without the combined efforts of our direc- tors Mr. Kitchen and Mr. Francis and many helpful members of the community we would never have succeeded. It was great! Prophecy 1978 Here we are at the premiere of the new television show, ' 'What Really Happened to the Class of '78?'' We are waiting for the star and narrator of the show, Bill Bliler, but it seems this class has taken over their old hometown, Illiopolis. Nathan Hartry is now the owner of Dekalb. Apparently, they have the only chicks he could get. Jill Arnold manages the camper sales. Her best customer is Sandy Wilson, who is quite famous for her male harem .Next door to Jill is the bowling alley called '' The Mouse House.11 It is operated in partnership by Steve Meister and Donna Bartels. Mary Smith couldn't make it as a fashion designer, so now she runs a hamburger joint, ' 'The Bare Bottom.'' She finally has something to go with her shakes. Marty Bradham, the town cop (Because he knows so much about the speed limit), couldn't be here tonight. He is out chasing motor-head, Greg Gidel. It is hard to believe that Greg still relies on his blue truck for his means of entertainment. Since Ethel Horwitz has retired, Shelley Leonard has taken her place. She is the head of Weight Watchers, and has introduced her own diet, an apple a day. The Fire Department seems to be in good hands with Richard Ballinger as the head mechanic and Ja - net Leonard as the siren. Tim Rogers owns both supermarkets in Illiopolis. Since he couldn't make up his mind which one he wanted to work with, he bought them both. Tammy Rohrig is the hair washer for the new beauty shop managed by none other than Julie Ha - vener. Julie has always been great in keeping us up on the latest European hair styles; but then she has always had a big head to work with, Bob Burris. Speaking of Bob, he has opened a massage parlor right next door to the beauty shop, because ev- erywhere that Julie went, Bob was sure to go. Penny Young publishes the town newspaper now titled Follow Your Rainbow. She still hasn't found her pot of gold, but we hear she is up to her knees in oil! ! She has several classmates working for her. John Moore has his own column, Dear Johnny , because he is so good with advice. Ron Craig and Greg Drabing also have a weekly column searching for members of their new club. ' 'The 1 Love Me Club.'' Since Toby Burke got gonged on the Gong Show for trying to sing and play his sax at the same time, he decided to join. Also in Follow Your Rainbow is the wildlife report. Bruce Mason is big in cattle, and it is reported that Steve Willis real- ly caught a weasel this time; he got his foot caught in the trap. What's this? A blackout? It must be the electricians from Illio Electric, Dave Reilly, and Charles Leeper. But thanks to Professor Adkins, things are running smoothly again. A few couples are now ar- riving with Debby Snyder leading the way. Following close behind is Herb, her love bug.
