BERTHA AYALA JUAN MORA A.F.S. SCHOLARSHIPS 1974 This year our school was able to have two students from abroad come to stay with us. They are Bertha Ayala and Juan Mora. Both are members of the Senior Class and have made many contributions to the school and to the com- munity. Below is a summation of their background and their feelings about being an A. F. S. representative. BERTHA AYALA Bertha (pronounced ber-ta) is 18 years old and has graduated from the French High School in Quito, Ecuador. She is the daughter of Ofelia de Ayala, also of Quito. She has one sister and two brothers. Her sister (age 27) is married and her name is Martha de Padron. Her older brother's name is Ivan. In her last year of school she studied the following courses: Math, Psychology, French, English, Literature, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, P. E. , and History. All courses in her school are pre-scheduled and thus are already arranged when they begin at the first of the year. The underlined courses are considered major and are attended five times a week. The others are mi- nor and are only attended two to three times a week. At the French school they go to classes from 8:00 until 12:00 in the morning and from 2:30 until 5:00 in the evening. When we asked Bertha what her most favorite and most disliked foods were she replied, I love barbeque and I guess what I dislike most are peanut butter sandwiches but I eat them in the cafeteria because I am always hungry. Bertha is staying with the James Dunn family here in Illiopolis and Diana Dunn is her host sister. JUAN MORA Juan is our other student and is from San Jose, Costa Rica. He has been and will be enrolled as a student at the Licea UNESCO (a United Nations organization entitled United Nations Educational Scientific Cultural Organization) high school. Juan is the son of Clementina and Victor Mf. Mora. He has two sisters; Cecilia (age 27) and Liqia (age 25) who is married. He also has two brothers; Julio (age 23) and Enrique (age 21). Juan will finish his last year of school when he returns to Costa Rica. He will study the following courses: Math, Chemistry, Biology, Philoso- phy, Spanish, English, and History. Juan's favorite food is pizza and of yet states, I haven't found a food that I dislike! Juan has been very active in the sports here at Illiopolis and has enjoyed them very much. Juan is staying with the Howard Wakelin family and his host brother is Jim Wakelin.

SUMMER AFS STUDENT PRYSCILLA HAYDEN A.F.S. SCHOLARSHIPS ABROAD 1973 Summer Pryscilla Hayden was chosen from the Springfield area as a regional finalist for the Americans Abroad Program for the 1973 summer. Her papers were sent to New York and she became a finalist in the Nationals. A finalist is someone who has been accepted to go, but as of the notification, has not received word on a specific home. Fin- ally, word came, and a home had been found on the island of Rhodes, Greece, the town of Rodos. There was much to do so Pryscilla got busy and started the paper work to get her passport and visa. She then had to find a way to New York to meet with thousands of other students on their way to a new home for the summer. After staying two nights in a Hotel, the students were up at a bright 5:30 and hurried to the airport to catch the plane that would take them to Istanbul, Turkey. . . or so they thought. There were many delays, but finally, 46 hours later, 300 students boarded the plane to Istanbul. Students that would go to Turkey, Greece, Afganistan, and many other countries. Before reaching Turkey there was a 24 hour stop-over in Iceland. Approximately 18 to 20 hours after the flight began, the students arrived in Turkey, only to divide into groups and board their individual planes to their coun- tries. Next stop: ATHENS! ! In Athens, the students (43) were given basic Greek lessons not only in the language, but also in the life style. The main food fbr the first three days was watermelon, cheese sandwiches, and warm coke. But, the best came later, when on the fourth day delicious baked chicken and french fries were served. But, the camp came to an end and the students went to their homes. (Pryscilla says that chicken was the last meat she had!) Pryscilla and Suzanne Woodard, the other student to Rodos, boarded the plane to the island. They were met by their families and taken to their homes. Pryscilla stayed with the Koumbiadis in Rodos. At first, it was very tense for Pryscilla, but as the summer went on, she learned to take things as they came (including mail). Most of the summer was spent in shopping, swimming, taking tours and meeting all kinds of people. She received and an- swered many letters during the summer too. She had two sisters, ages 21 and 17 and one brother, age 20. Pryscilla learned quite a lot about the country and speaks the language well. She left Rodos many times to stay at villages with other families. Finally, after two and a half months abroad, the time had come to go home. The good-byes were tearful, but the want to be home again was stronger. Before she would reach home though, Pryscilla again was to meet yet another family and live with them for a week in Athens. She lived with the Spatula family there. After four wonderful days there she boarded the plane with the same 300 students and headed for home. After many more delays and a stop-over in Scotland Pryscilla arrived home in Decatur and was met by her family and friends. She feels it was a wonderful summer and urges all who can to apply for a summer abroad. 10
