SCHOLARSHIPS ABROAD 1973 Summer Pryscilla Hayden was chosen from the Springfield area as a regional finalist for the Americans Abroad Program for the 1973 summer. Her papers were sent to New York and she became a finalist in the Nationals. A finalist is someone who has been accepted to go, but as of the notification, has not received word on a specific home. Fin- ally, word came, and a home had been found on the island of Rhodes, Greece, the town of Rodos. There was much to do so Pryscilla got busy and started the paper work to get her passport and visa. She then had to find a way to New York to meet with thousands of other students on their way to a new home for the summer. After staying two nights in a Hotel, the students were up at a bright 5:30 and hurried to the airport to catch the plane that would take them to Istanbul, Turkey. . . or so they thought. There were many delays, but finally, 46 hours later, 300 students boarded the plane to Istanbul. Students that would go to Turkey, Greece, Afganistan, and many other countries. Before reaching Turkey there was a 24 hour stop-over in Iceland. Approximately 18 to 20 hours after the flight began, the students arrived in Turkey, only to divide into groups and board their individual planes to their coun- tries. Next stop: ATHENS! ! In Athens, the students (43) were given basic Greek lessons not only in the language, but also in the life style. The main food fbr the first three days was watermelon, cheese sandwiches, and warm coke. But, the best came later, when on the fourth day delicious baked chicken and french fries were served. But, the camp came to an end and the students went to their homes. (Pryscilla says that chicken was the last meat she had!) Pryscilla and Suzanne Woodard, the other student to Rodos, boarded the plane to the island. They were met by their families and taken to their homes. Pryscilla stayed with the Koumbiadis in Rodos. At first, it was very tense for Pryscilla, but as the summer went on, she learned to take things as they came (including mail). Most of the summer was spent in shopping, swimming, taking tours and meeting all kinds of people. She received and an- swered many letters during the summer too. She had two sisters, ages 21 and 17 and one brother, age 20. Pryscilla learned quite a lot about the country and speaks the language well. She left Rodos many times to stay at villages with other families. Finally, after two and a half months abroad, the time had come to go home. The good-byes were tearful, but the want to be home again was stronger. Before she would reach home though, Pryscilla again was to meet yet another family and live with them for a week in Athens. She lived with the Spatula family there. After four wonderful days there she boarded the plane with the same 300 students and headed for home. After many more delays and a stop-over in Scotland Pryscilla arrived home in Decatur and was met by her family and friends. She feels it was a wonderful summer and urges all who can to apply for a summer abroad. 10 BERTHA AYALA JUAN MORA A.F.S. SCHOLARSHIPS 1974 This year our school was able to have two students from abroad come to stay with us. They are Bertha Ayala and Juan Mora. Both are members of the Senior Class and have made many contributions to the school and to the com- munity. Below is a summation of their background and their feelings about being an A. F. S. representative. BERTHA AYALA Bertha (pronounced ber-ta) is 18 years old and has graduated from the French High School in Quito, Ecuador. She is the daughter of Ofelia de Ayala, also of Quito. She has one sister and two brothers. Her sister (age 27) is married and her name is Martha de Padron. Her older brother's name is Ivan. In her last year of school she studied the following courses: Math, Psychology, French, English, Literature, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, P. E. , and History. All courses in her school are pre-scheduled and thus are already arranged when they begin at the first of the year. The underlined courses are considered major and are attended five times a week. The others are mi- nor and are only attended two to three times a week. At the French school they go to classes from 8:00 until 12:00 in the morning and from 2:30 until 5:00 in the evening. When we asked Bertha what her most favorite and most disliked foods were she replied, I love barbeque and I guess what I dislike most are peanut butter sandwiches but I eat them in the cafeteria because I am always hungry. Bertha is staying with the James Dunn family here in Illiopolis and Diana Dunn is her host sister. JUAN MORA Juan is our other student and is from San Jose, Costa Rica. He has been and will be enrolled as a student at the Licea UNESCO (a United Nations organization entitled United Nations Educational Scientific Cultural Organization) high school. Juan is the son of Clementina and Victor Mf. Mora. He has two sisters; Cecilia (age 27) and Liqia (age 25) who is married. He also has two brothers; Julio (age 23) and Enrique (age 21). Juan will finish his last year of school when he returns to Costa Rica. He will study the following courses: Math, Chemistry, Biology, Philoso- phy, Spanish, English, and History. Juan's favorite food is pizza and of yet states, I haven't found a food that I dislike! Juan has been very active in the sports here at Illiopolis and has enjoyed them very much. Juan is staying with the Howard Wakelin family and his host brother is Jim Wakelin. Debbie Bartels, Pres. Teresa Kapper, Secretary Cheryl Ca- rey, Treasurer Carolyn Beck, Sponsor Mr. Blakley. We entered I.H.S. in the fall of '70 as very enthusiastic and ready for change freshman. Looking forward to a fine year with Paul Mason, Pres. Mark Stone, V. Pres. , Martha Dale, Sec., and Karen Keleher, Treasurer, we started things off with a bakesale to make enough money for our freshman float. . . speaking of our freshman float . .. we had a lot of fun and put in a lot of work on the theme. . . 'Victory is Our Bag. The colors were great and we liked it, even though we got fourth place. It was then the big changes began. Enemies became close and friends became closer with the passing of a dear friend. . . The fall of '71 we again entered I.H.S. a little less enthusiastic but again ready for change. Having Ted Ho- henstein, Pres. , Pryl Hayden, V. Pres. , Deb Bartels, Sec. , and Vicki Shartzer, Treasurer, to lead us, we had can- dy sales a bake sale, and a cake raffle for money making projects. We would work hard, always looking forward to our Senior year and class trip. We felt our float was a winning float with the great theme of There's No Butts About It. . .The Pirates Will Light Up A Victory , but unfortunately, the judges didn't agree with us and we re- ceived third place. The spirit, however, was still there and we started our Junior year determined to get first. As we became Juniors in '72 we learned that the summer could change us as much as the school year. We had grown and changed a lot in the last two years, and now faced a busy year. Led by Karen Keleher, Pres., Ted Ho- henstein, V.Pres., Lori Arnold, Sec. , and Julie Bliler, Treasurer, we sold magazines and sold candy, had a bake sale and cake raffle and sponsored the best prom in the history of Illiopolis High School. The theme. . . Summer Breeze .. .the band.. .Godfrey Cain. Our Senior year brought about some of the greatest changes we would face in high school. Our President, Ter- esa Kapper, along with the help of Deb Bartels, V.Pres. , Cheryl Carey, Sec. , and Carolyn Beck, Treasurer, worked extremely hard to raise enough money to take us to Florida. We appreciated the work that was done. Homecoming was a great success as we chose We May Never Pass This Way Again for our theme and Deb Bartels, Susie Blake- man, Julie Bliler, Julie Johansen, and Karen Keleher as queen candidates and Steve Boyed, Mark Stone, Ted Ho- henstein, Andy McMahon, and Ronnie Johansen as king candidates. Julie and Steve were a great King and Queen. Our money making projects were; two bake sales, selling coke, candy, chili and spaghetti suppers, selling Christ- mas decorations, a Halloween party, cake raffle, and our rummage sale. Finally we were on our way to Florida. Florida was a fantastic time for all and finally graduation time came. We faced the biggest change of all.. .the world and all the changing we would do to it. 14 LORI ARNOLD- G.A.A. I, II, III; Track IIIjF.T.A. Super Jock, known to a few present as MARK STONE, reporting to you from station WTRY. direct from the White House. It is a beautiful, bright, sunny day, just right for the occasion for which we are gathered here. For today, at long last. Bonnalee is losing her dear little PRYL. Of course she insisted upon a White House wedding, which will most likely prove to be fabulous, since she put so many months into it. (Not really, she’s only been working on it since graduation day in 1974) I'm sure you're all aware that Pryscilla Hayden is an accomplished song writer with her newest release, “I f I Were A Garbage Can. the number one record across the nation. As I glance at the crowd, I see many familiar faces from my old class of’74. There's Randy LeBeane, recently given the “Most Eligible Bachelor of the Year Award.” This is very understandable since he is a world famous playboy. And there's Vicki Shartzer hanging on him. Vicki and Randy are inseparable since Vicki has been quite successful herself. Just this month she appeared as the centerfold in a new magazine entitled “scientific wonder . Hey, look at that. All the flowers have finally arrived. Bringing them is another old classmate Donna Haram with her flower shop in Hicksville, Kentucky she has become quite a success. And her new hairstyle looks wonderful! Speaking of hairstyles Teresa Kapper has just been named to the 10 best coiffeur list for her magnificent hairstyles. She is head maid at the Decatur Holiday Inn during the day and works at Dekalb at night. And now- that we’ve mentioned Dekalb here comes Steve Boyd better known as “The Egg-Picking King of the World. But once again, fame as being a king has hit him hard and I'm afraid I was unable to get him to say a few words to us. He does appear to be talking to that mountain over there. Hmmmm . I didn’t know there were any mountains in Washington D.C. Oh, that’s not a mountain, it’s only a side view of Julie Bilier's nose. Julie seems to be trying to get back some of the charm that won her “Flirt of the Year back in '74, but the poor girl seems to have lost her touch with Steve. I suppose your wondering what that pounding sound is. Well, don’t worry, it isn't raining, that's my side-kick, Teddy Starr beating on the microphone. Quiet Teddy, . What's that noise? Oh, here comes Big Mama Jim Burris on his motorcycle. I hear he’s going to attempt to jump over the White House today. And there he goes . up, up, up down, dow n, down . oh. that's loo bad. he just smashed into a tree. Better Luck next time Jim We said that a lot to Jim back in '74. Did you see that Teddy Teddy? Oh, well, I guess Teddy's gone. You all know him don’t you? He's a famous drummer fora group called “The Outhouse”. Sorry, but I can’t recall his last name since he’s gone by Starr for so long . Talking about stars there is Julie Johansen who is still trying to make it big in Hollywood. She finally got her first big break last week, a commercial for Dr. Spook's corn healer. I had never realized how photogenic her big toe was. Here comes an old friend engrossed with his keys as usual. Yes, folks, it's Roger Dial. Hey Rog. Better watch out for that there he goes right down the steps. Is that Paul Mason running to help him? But Paul is a famous tooth surgeon. I guess Paul has always ran after anything he could get. Oh, now I can see the whole situation. There’s Teddy pounding on Roger’s head. I'm glad he finally found something hollow to pound on. and Paul has extracted a tooth, yes, I said a tooth, from Roger’s little toe. It could never happen to anyone besides Roger. Mike Rogers seems to find it very amusing that Roger’s front tooth is now missing. Mike is known as “Crazy Hands and we can see why as we watch him run the Hag up the Hag pole. Hey, wail a minute .. . that flagpole is waving. Oh, it's Susie Blakeman in her new red, white, and blue dress. I’m sure you’ve all seen her on these posters that say “Aunt Susie Wants You. Also moving fast, Carolyn Beck has quickly become known as the “World Famous Cheese Cutter so naturally Bonnalee asked her to cut the cheese, there she is now and there’s Andy McMahon close behind. I guess he's giving up on Carolyn though for he’s running after Debbie Bartels who just streaked by wearing a sign that says “the bigger the better. This incident has caused quite a commotion with one of the guests. Oh, it's Sister Janie Shartzer, a devoted nun w ho just passed out . she can’t see how anyone could be so indecent. Here comes one person nobody could ever forget, Sharon German, our one and only mystery-solving maiden. She has been pronounced to be the only person to have ever found IT!!! Not far behind her is Shawm Provines, the grabber of our class. He was always grabbing. Oh, wow, there’s Vicki, Vicki Rogers, of course, and look at that outfit she has on. Vicki is a stripper at Woody’s Woo Woo. owned of course by that charming Elwood Willis. It sounds like Vicki is shouting “More a More a Oh, now I understand she was yelling at Juan Mora. Costa Rico enjoyed Juan’s absence so much that they wouldn't let him back in. But he's doing just dandy here, he's a topless waiter at Woody's. My, this is a beautiful wedding and everything looks so nice. There’s a champaign fountain over there and Bertha Ayala is wading in it. It seems she misunderstood and thought it was water. I bet she has a nice time tonight. And over there at the table are three of the finest caterers in the country. Bev Lohse, Sandra Harter, and Mary Mattingly. By the way, have you noticed the fine silver supplied by Danny Galloway(????) Why here are two old classmates that are heard from quite frequently. Lori Arnold and Karen Keleher. Their jobs take them all over the world and they run into each other often. They’re both fog horns on well known oceanliners. Did you all know there are eight wonders of the world now? (We aren’t referring to Karen's mouth) The latest addition is Tom Sheets, we're still wondering what he looks like. 1 am sorry to announce this flash bulletin. Jane Brown can't be with us this afternoon. It seems she is in the hospital with another common virus. Well, here comes Kevin Kaylor with his flashing light. He has just informed me that he w-on't be able to stay long for he has duty on Snake Road tonight. Speaking of fish, I last heard Richard Wilson was the proud owner of the “Wishy Fishy. He has asked me to announce that everyone is invited to the restaurant after the ceremony for a free Saturday night special of his, a gourmet dinner of perch. Hmmmm .. . sounds pretty fishy to me. Why there’s Cheryl Carey sitting on the White House Steps. I bet it doesn't feel the same as the old wooden staircase back at Illiopolis High. Last week, David Mendenhall, a famous Boxer, ripped his shorts and on his way to the Home Ec. room to gel them repaired fell through the hole Cheryl had worn through and broke his leg. He must have forgotten his glasses. Is that Ronnie Johansen lying on the grass under the tree? Yes, I said lying there. Ronnie has recently been appointed as head chef at Woody’s. Poor Randy Craig, the other day he was so involved in his birdwatching he didn't notice the woodpecker pecking at his head and this resulted in a severe case of amnesia. There he is now helping out by serving the punch, sure hope he dosn't spill any on his lovely clothing. The music has just started now and here comes Pryscilla walking down the aisle. Doesn't her beautiful white dress set off her brown nose lovely? Hey, slop the music . this is Super Jock signing off for now since the wedding can't go on without a groom so I must lake my place .. . 22 SENIOR CLASS WILLS I, Susie Blakeman, will Jim Wakelin another nose to sing through. Our great Junior Class once again returned to ICHS in the fall of '73. Before long we learned what defeat was as our devastating float, We'll GoPher a Goodyear went for a big fourth. But not to be discouraged, we jumped right back to break the record for our tremendous magazine sales surpassed the thousand mark. Following the tradition, we sold candy at the games, providing the mice didn't beat us to it. Junior-Senior Prom was a great success, held at the Sheraton Inn. Since we have such a creative class we come up with a theme of If. The band Effic proved to be quite a group, but this was hoped since the bill proved to be quite a sum. With a motto of It matters not how long you live, but HOW ... and colors of burgandy and pink, we shall return next year for one last try. 26 Karen Arnold Bob Behagg Jill Bliler Joan Burdzilauskas Mary Dobrinsky Kim Hall Gary Hallam Nancy Hartry Teresa Hohenstein Jeanne Kilhoffer David Koonce Tomye Layton David Lee 27 Connie Huyear Elaine German Sindie Jones Jay Kelly Jay Kent Carolyn Leeper Sam Leka Ron Leonard Ed McDermott Ken McDonald Rosemary McGee Cathy Meister Linda Mendenhall Leanne Porter Cindy Ramsey David Ray John Reilly Debbi Rogers Deb Scattergood Judy Showalter George Smith Lisa Turnbull Steve Turner Allan Witts Jon Wurl 28 SOPHOMORES FROM L TO R: Mr. Camfie Id-Advisor, Donna Laughlin-Vice-President, Marci Kay lor-President, Dan Skelly-Treasurer, Karen Sheets-Secretary. The sophomores started their year by again building a marvelous float, although the judges didn't think so. It'll Be an Up-Roar of a Victory and We Ain't Lion. was our clever float theme. We sold a super-sudzy, fast-acting all-purpose cleaner called ROSS-CLEAN- ER!!! Never heard of it? Well neither had we until we tried to sell it. Then our sponsors surprised us with a little package filled with interesting odd Christmas objects to sell. With our great versatility we managed to make a success of the venture. Among our many, money making projects, we've had a bake sale and a few cake raffles. Our class officers were: President- Marci Kay lor, Vice President-Donna Laughlin, Sec- retary-Karen Sheets, Treasurer-Dan Skelly. Our limited money-raising projects, consisted of a bake sale, a Cake Raffle for the Booster Club, out of the kindness of our hearts, and the first and probably ONLY Valentine's Day King and Queen Contest. The cheer- leaders led everyone to a great fighting spirit and Coach Smalling gave a run down on the Friday night game against Moroa. The announcement of homecoming King and Queen was also made at the bonfire. This years Queen was Julie Johansen and King was Steve Boyd. Attendants for Queen were: Debbie Bartels, Susie Blakeman, Julie Bliler, and Karen Keleher. King attendants were: Ted Hohenstein, Ron Johansen, Andy McMahon, and Mark Stone. The Homecoming Parade was held Friday afternoon, with the winning floats announced at halftime of the football game held that night. The Seniors were awarded first place for their float; A Pirate Victory, You Can Bet On It. Second Place went to the Freshmen whose theme was; Our Pirates are in Ship-Shape. The theme for the Homecoming dance was We May Never Pass This Way Again . The highlight of the eve- ning was the crowning of Julie and Steve by the 1972 retiring King and Queen Bill Witts and Linda Knisley. All in all it was a great Homecoming victory. Each year they have a project in which they buy a piece of sports equipment for the school. Last year's project was a scoreboard for the football field. It cost approximately $1800 and was purchased from the Nevco Company in Greenville, Illi- nois. One of the main money making projects was an auction at which the club cleared over $500. This year's project is the Universal Gym purchased from the Universal Gym Company. It cost approximately $2700 and has already been put to quite a bit of good use. The Gym consists of nine different stations with each station dealing with different muscles in different parts of the body. Following is a brief summary of the muscles involved in each station. Station 1: knee, thigh, and hip muscles. Station 2: chest, shoulder, and arm muscles. Station 3: shoulder and upper arm muscles. Station 4: back, upperback, shoulder, front and upper arm, and chest muscles. Station 5: can be used with almost all muscles in different parts of the body. Station 6: upper arm, back, and shoulder muscles. Station 7: upper back, back, shoulder, and upper arm muscles. Station 8: Hip muscles. Station 9: For developing leg muscles through running. The Club assigns a set of couples each month to a money making project. The officers of the Club are: Presi- dent, Sharon Reeder; Vice-President, Jack Burke; Secretary, Larry Betzer; Treasurer, Marie Davis; Membership Chairman, Carolyn Lamb; and Publicity Chairman, Bob Johnson. The school offers its sincere thanks for all the help in the way of time, effort, and equipment donated by mem- bers of the club. JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM If was the theme of the 1974 Junior-Senior Prom. This year's prom was held at the Sheraton Inn in Springfield. Music was provided by Effic. After prom was held at the YMCA in Springfield which included swimming, vol- leyball, pool, ping pong, and jumping on the trampoline. Chaperones were Mr. and Mis. But, moving right along, they kept the team spirit and came up with a 14-12 loss to Pawnee. However, the team was not discouraged. The team, with confi- dence and spirit, went to Niantic. Our De- fense played a great game and we tied 0-0. Assumption came in to take a win from us at 27-8. At Homecoming, the spirit and showmanship of the Pirates came through with a 23-0 win for Illipolis. Back in spirit, the team went on to face Loving- ton. Fighting hard in the first half, the Pirates were enthusiastic, but the inevit- able came anyway. The spirits lowered in the second half and we lost 30-8. On to Bethany to face a 27-8 loss and a 46-0 loss against Mowequa. We fought against Macon, the unbeaten Macon, to end our season with a 32-8 loss. In spite of the losses this year, the team came through and will get in shape for next year's sweep—OURS!!! The JV had a very good season with 5 wins, 1 loss, and 2 ties.
