S. we were able to help sponsor a foreign student, Boun Nhang Sengchandavong. Boun is from Vientiane, Laos, which is in south-eastern Asia. To get here Boun took a plane from Vientiane to Bangkok (Thailand), where he took a plane to Alaska and then to New York, where he took a bus to Cleveland, Ohio. From Cleveland he took a bus to Columbus then to Indianapolis. There he met his American family, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Johanson and David. Boun was honored in our annual homecoming parade by riding in a special A. F. S. car. Boun also spoke at an assembly and showed us different items from his country. Class of S W X S i i tu- rM 0J O The seniors of '73 had four active and rewarding years. They started out the freshman year by winning first place on their float We Artichoke Em . They also sold Watkins Vanilla. But they didn't stop there; they were thinking ahead to their junior and senior years: to Prom, and most especially the Senior Class Trip. Their sophomore year was just about the same, only this time they turned out a second place float titled Our Action Will Crush the Comets . The candy sales and a soc hop were their main money projects. The most active year for the Class of '73 was their junior year. They planned out the Homecoming parade and took second place again with their float Looks Like We'll Dunk'em, Donut . Prom was held at the St. Nicholas Hotel in Spring- field, Feelin' Alright was the theme, and the Makinaw Valley Boys were the band. Following Homecoming they had a big success with their magazine sale, followed up with candysales at the games and a bake sale. J And finally in their last year, the year they had all worked hard to reach, they slid into first place again at Homecoming with The Pirates are Wieners and used one of John Lennon's best songs, Imagine for their Homecoming theme. Gaining more seniors their last year, they had to work harder to raise enough money for their trip to Florida. But that didn't seem to bog down the seniors any. The money making projects their last year were: concession stand at home football games, cake sales at the home games, a Halloween Party, V jy u 0 v candy sales, a chili and a spaghetti supper, a bake sale, a cake raffle, and lastly, a rummage sale. The senior class would like to thank the town for their help and support those past four years. THANK YOU. Forty-seven mem- bers of the Class of '73 graduated from Illiopo- lis High School on Thursday, May 24, at 8:00 p. m. in the new gym. The guest speak- er was Mr. Adams, the Director of Admissions at Illinois State Uni- versity. The valedic- torian address was given by Beth Ann Bliler, and Margaret Ann McGee gave the salutatori an address. Diplomas were pre- sented by Mr. Herbert Bliler, and the class role was read by Mr. Leslie Blakeman. The high school chorus, under the direction of Mimi Bliler, sang two selections. The girl's ensemble also sang. Accompanists were Ed BETH ANN BLILER and MrS' J,ameS Valedictorian Salutatori an MARGARET McGEE 20 THOSELAST FEW MOMENTS AT GOOD OL I.H.S. SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY Here we are at the geographical center of Illinois. We are talking with Ed Bliler, President of the Illinois Gen- eological Society. He is a retired lawyer, former governor of Illinois, and founder of the well-known action De- tective Agency. Since retirement, Ed feels he has a need to keep himself busy. Since he has already traced his family tree back to Adam and Eve, he has decided to try and find out what each and every one of his classmates from the Illiopolis Class of ’73 are now doing. The most ironic of all of Ed's discoveries was that of Mark Leonard, who now owns his own turkey farm just south of Illiopolis. We hear he does a lot of his business with the school. One of his customers is Mike Dobrinsky. After all, he's got to keep his family fed. How many are there now? Let's see. . .there's Rover, Spot, Blacky, Lassie, .. .oh let's not forget his lovely wife, the former mascot of the Illiopolis Pirates. But, Mike doesn't do all his business with the turkey farm. He also buys a lot from Dandy Andy's, which is run by (of course you all know)--Andy Kilhoffer. Sue Ketchum has finally moved up to the position of head cashier there; the position was formerly held by Marcia Lewis. Marcia was offered the long awaited position of cashier at the K-Mart in Decatur. Ed also tells us that Steve Bula has become wrestling champion of the world. You can see him (along with his unbelievable acting ability) on All Star Wrestling. Watch, as he and another former class mate, Jackie Reed, bat- tle it out next Saturday night. However, they are not the only athletes from the Class of '73 . Also, there is Bob Sumner, who's still working on that 300 in bowling, and Jo Ellen Moore, the manager of the Cincinnati Reds, with Betty Mifflin, her star pitcher and 20-game winner. But, let's not forget good old Hav (Gary Havener) who's spider like arms have replaced Wilt Chamberlin in the world of basketball. Well now, sports isn't everything. Let's take a look at what this class has done for the world of music. The last Ed heard, Warren Smith has just been relieved from his duties as band director at Mt. Auburn. (We hear a lot of tears have been shed by the Mt. Auburn girls over this loss. ) But not everyone has gone downhill. Gail Haygood has made it big in the music world by blowing bubbles for the Lawrence Welk Show. To top it all off, Bill Witts has become No. 1 on the music charts. Yes, the greatest since Johnny Cash, it's Bill's Buckaroos and their latest single Billie from the Hillie . And Ed tells us how he found poor Sandra Provines, tom between her two loves, music apd auto Mechanics. She is searching desperately for a way to put her music scores into car horns. Good luck, Sandy. Also in the auto business are Karen O'Dell and Wanda Thomas. They own their own car lot. Wanda buys 'em; Karen wrecks 'em. Just then Ed remarked, Karen is not the only one wrecking things lately. Who else could he be talking about? Ed's face turns to one of apathy (But then, when you think about it, Ed's face was always one of apathy). So, Beth Bliler is now No. 1 on the F. B. I. 's most wanted list. How could that be? It seems that she has blown up the Statue of Liberty. The reason. . . she found it useless and felt we were wasting too much money on it. (Well, Beth, how does it feel to finally be wanted?) It turned out all right though. In the absence of the Statue of Liberty, Mitzi Ramsey has been chosen to take her place and now stands there day after day waving hi to everyone who enters the country. Also at the top of the F. B. I. 's most wanted list is Kathy Sheets. When we asked Ed what in the world she could of done, he only shook his head and replied, Who knows . Speaking of noses—Naze's nose can be seen on every billboard across the nation. Naze (Karen Mendenhall) and her nose are advertising for Dristan Nazel Spray with their slogan Naze and the nose for Nasel Spray. Ernie Foote is doing well in the business world too. He has his own shoe store. His motto is: We've got a shoe for every Foote. While we're in the foot business Cathy Burdzilasukas isn't doing too bad with manufacturing of her Birds Legs Hosiery. Diana Laughlin is the owner of her own charm school teaching young girls her famous walk. Diana has employed Debbie Deaton as head of the department of marriage. She teaches the basic fundamentals of a good marriage. Lome Reed must have taken Debbie's course (whether she passed or not we won't say). After being married for over 47 years, it looks as if she and her husband will be celebrating their 50 wedding anniversay in a new home. They finally saved up enough money to move out of Grandma Bliler's basement and into the basement of the old gradeschool apartment house. Another marriage that has worked out well is that of Denise Kilhoffer. Following the Kilhoffer tradition, she has just had another child. Margaret McGee has achieved her life long goal and in No. 1 secretary to Donny Osmond. Micki Rogers is another one that has achieved her life-long goal. She has tied down that long lost lover of hers (?) Yes, and Ed tells us how for the last 47 years she has been stocking shelves at Dandy Andy's just trying to put him thru college. One person just starting out in the work tccess is Linda Knisley. She has been awarded her first acting job. She plays the part of a famous lion tamer. (Could that lion possibly be Clarence??) Boun Sengchandavong enjoyed his trip to the United States so much that when he returned home to Laos, he applied and was accepted as an am- bassador to the United Nations. Tom Ross and Mick Mourning must have decided that they too like traveling. They went on a two-month vacation after graduation and have not been heard from since. It was a big disappointment to Ed who considered himself a master at tracing people. Cindy Millen graduated from her position at Sandy's and from her title of Little Miss Sandy to the new title of Burger King's Queen Speaking of graduating, you'd think that after Mike Ffildebrant graduated from high-school, Heed have left Illiopolis, but Ed says that Illiopolis just couldn't do without his buzzing around of his bike. So the mayor, Maribeth Hartry, now pays him a yearly salary. When this decision came through, Gloria Hancock, the town cryer, told Becky Bell (now following in her father's footsteps and printing the underground newspaper, Bouncing Along with Becky) Becky proceeded to write it up in her paper. Phyllis Mendenhall has married Mike Bruntjen (Can you guess why Ed didn't mention this under successful mar- riages?) and they are loaded down with their responsibilities to America and farming. Speaking of being loaded, Mike Carey and Bennet Lybarger know the feeling well. They are the owners of Bennet's Booze Bar (formerly O'Neill's). And Brad Stone, after playing Coach Smalling in the '73 speech class skit, fit the part so well, that after coach retired, Brad took over his position. Rod Gass has gone back to his past love, Michele McDermott and they're living happily in their house (or should we say mansion, for, of course Rod became President of the Illiop- olis Farmers State Bank after Michele's father retired. ) Just then Ed started to leave. When we asked why, he replied, Turn around, you'll understand . We turned around and suddenly the reason became very apparent. Down the street came Vicki Koczware, whip in hand, searching desperately for someone to be on her crew. She'll take anyone that will come. Well goodbye Ed, I think we'll be moving right along too. 22 SENIORS ROW 1: Mark Leonard, Mike Bruntjen, Bill Witts, Andy Kilhoffer, Mike Dobrinsky, Mike Carey, Gary Havener; ROW 2: Mitzi Ramsey, Vicki Koczwara, Michele McDermott, Margaret McGee, Becky Bell, Debbie Deaton, Sue Ketchum; ROW 3: Beth Bliler, Ed Bliler, Denise Hall, Phyllis Mendenhall, Betty Mifflin, Mrs. Havener, Jo Ellen Moore, Mick Mourning, Karen Mendenhall, Tom Ross. This promotion consisted of having our lockers at the other end of the hall. Our money-making projects were having a bake sale and selling stationery. We did both of our money-making projects in the first semester. By the way, would anyone like to buy some stationery? Rome wasn't built in a day, but our bonfire was. It was one of the highest bon- fires ever built, even though it wouldn't bum. Our float, Pirates--The Un and Only, will remain the un and only for quite some time. So much for the Freshmen, but look for next year's Sophomores. The cheerleaders got everyone into the homecoming spirit with help from the speech class, who performed their skit Adventures In A Sink. Bill Witts and Linda Knisley were named homecoming king and queen. Bill lit the bonfire, and after a short pep talk by Coach Smalling, the traditional Assumption Comet dummy was burned. Homecoming '72 was under way! The annual homecoming parade made its rounds Friday afternoon, with the winning floats announced at half-time of the football game. The senior class received the first place trophy for their float The Pirates Are 'Wieners' . Second place went to the sophomores, whose float theme was We'll Drive 'Em Buggy . The Illi- opolis Pirates lost their homecoming game to the Assumption Comets by a score of 8-6, but the school spirit was there. A new addition was made to the homecoming activities this year. A tea was held in honor of the Miopolis High School classes of '33, '43, '53, and '63. The senior class sponsored the tea, which was held Saturday evening before the dance. The formal homecoming king and queen coronation took place Saturday night at the Homecoming Dance. Linda Knisley and Bill Witts were crowned by the retiring queen and king, Karen Cook and Terry Kapper. Attendants for the queen were Cathy Burdzilauskas, Michele McDermott, Karen Mendenhall, and Mitzi Ramsey. Attendants for the king were Steve Bula, Mike Bruntjen, Rod Gass, and Tom Ross. They decide which pictures should go on pages and how those pictures and the write-ups that go with them should be arranged. They also decide on the settings for most of the year- book pictures. Many long hours are put in after school and sometimes at home. Write-up Staff The write-up staff has to work hard to get their write-ups in on time. They spend a lot of time on these and there are a great deal of them to do. Sponsor The sponsor of the yearbook must see to it that the editor carries out her duties and has the yearbook finished on time. She gives advice, answers questions, and solves problems. It is also a very time consuming job, and it requires a great deal of patience. Photography Staff Many of the yearbook snaps are taken by the photography staff. They take all of these snaps in their free time. Sometimes they have to make extra trips or go out of their way to get a snap that is just right. Editor The editor's job is to plan the yearbook and see that each staff does its job. It is up to the editor to see that all deadlines are met. The job involves a lot of responsi- bility and is very time consuming. Business Staff The business staff finances the yearbook. In the fall members of this staff solicit advertise- ments for the yearbook from our local merchants. They also type and send letters about buying ads to out-of-town companies that do business with the school. In January they sell yearbooks to the students, faculty, and other members of the community. This year, for the first time, the staff can- vassed Illiopolis looking for yearbook Patrons and Royal Patrons. Donations from these people helped a great deal. The yearbook could not get along without the help of its business staff. STANDING: Cathy Burdzilauskas, Marcia Lewis, Debbie Bartels, Phyllis Mendenhall, Julie Jo- hansen; SEATED: Betty Mifflin, Head. Typing Staff The typists are a very necessary part of the yearbook staff, although their job is not a very rewarding one. They must type all the write- ups for the yearbook. They also help the business staff type advertisement letters in the fall. Art Staff The artwork in the yearbook is done by the members of the art staff. These people have a lot of talent. We are glad that they use this talent and their time for us. Maurice Wilson, Denise Hall, Christie Schulze, Head, Kim Hall, Mark Blair. 63 ILLIOPOLIS DRAMA CLUB There are thirty seven active members in the Drama Club. Some of the students said yes. So they had a couple of meetings after school to get it together. At first the paper didn't have a name, so they ran a contest and it got the name THE PIRATE PLANK. The Illiopolis Chapter of the National Honor Society began the year's acti- vities with a White Christmas Program for the high school students. The chorus opened the program with 'Twas The Night Before Christmas . The faculty made their debut in the entertainment world as the team of Lawson, Orr, Weatherford, and Zeman devoured four bananas in record time. Santa dropped by later to hear the teachers' Christmas wishes (teachers courtesy of the speech class). Re- freshments were provided and the students donated food items which were distri- buted throughout Illiopolis. The National Honor Society conducted a Heart Fund Drive in March and collected over $160 for the Heart Association. The Honor Society also held its Third Annual Fine Arts Festival in March. Illiopolis students were invited to display their dramatic, vocal, instrumental, and artistic talents. The program was shortened to one evening this year, and the attendance was greatly improved. Each month throughout the school year, the National Honor Society selected a senior member as Student of the Month. At the end of the year, a Student of the Year was named. 72 L. Mendenhall, C.
