We further recognize Coach Smalling, not only for the part he has played in producing better athletes, but also because he has set for us an example of what dedication, perseverance, and desire can accomplish. 4 Walter P. FIRST ROW: Alvin Rautbort, Frank Evans, Kevin Kaylor, Elwood Willis, Roger Dial, Bennet Lybarger, John Hudson, Martin Stahl, Advisor: Jim Lind- gren ACTIVITIES The Illiopolis chapter of Future Farmers of American had many worthwhile activities this year. They were the foremost organization in the school, and it can be proved by our many activities. One of the highlights of the year was when the beef judging team won its sectional contest by an overwhelming number of points. Out of the top ten individuals in the contest; the Illiopolis team placed first, second, third and fifth. Another was the chap- ter's presence at the Farm Bureau Banquet held at the Heritage House. Perhaps the biggest and most educational event this year was the Senior's trip to Kansas City for the National F.F.A. Convention which lasted seven days. At the hotel during our stay, Mr. Lindgren managed to lose his life savings playing poker. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Advisor: Mrs. Allen Treasurer: Susie Bliler Secretary: Molly McKean President: Martha Hemp V. President: Larry Leonard Recorder: John Bruntjen This year was probably one of the busiest for the National Honor Society. November 29 we showed our first and only movie of the year, Mein Kampf. We also repainted and repaired the plaques represent- ing the schools in the Meridian Conference. These plaques will be hung in the new gym. Our last project of the year was the Fine Arts Festival, March 22-26. Throughout the week, students' art and literary works were displayed in the room west of the library. On Monday and Wednesday nights of that week, programs featuring music, drama, and dance were presented. Tuesday, the Speech class pre- sented The Bad Children. Students of the Month were also elected throughout the year. The club's project for this year was compiling a booklet, THE ROLLING WALRUS, which contained many fine poems, stories, essays, and illustrations by the students. The staff worked many hard hours, and we're sure you'll agree that it was worth it. FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA AMERICA. Officers: J. Moore: B. Bliler: C. Burdzilaukas: A. Leonard: K. Sheets: M. Besides the usual events such as bake sales and hobo day, F.H.A.'ers served in the Hospitality Room during the Jr. High Tournament. In observance of F.H.A. Week, members held a different activity each day. They finally got their living room furniture this year and so accomplished their goal. They ended the year with the usual Home Ec Style show and installation of of- ficers. 1st ROW: P. Hayden, B. Bell, K. Cook, M. Lee, J. Brown, V. Rogers, M. Stengel. 2nd ROW: M. Ramsey, G. Hancock, M. Witts ACTIVITIES The Drama Club began its productions by first putting on The Littlest Angel, in which Bill Witts was the littlest angel. Spurred on by its small success, the next step was a bigger and better production, this time, Thorton Wilder's By the Skin of Our Teeth. Martha Hemp, as Sabina, the maid, led the entire cast: Phil Hayden as Mr. Antrobus, Laurie Burke as Mrs. Antrobus, Janet Roher as Gladys, Kathy Sheets as the fortune teller, and Bill Witts as Henry. Drama Club was also represented at district contest by Martha Hemp, Chuck Bisbee, and Micki Rogers, with Martha and Chuck going on and competing in Sectional. And then we had Sue Ketchum and Kim Adams participating in the Fine Arts Festival. It was a good year, and we give our thanks to everyone who supported us. 23 DRAMA CLUB SNAPS 'Well, you see, Sir . . Following the announcement, Pirate fans looked on as Mike lit the bonfire and the traditional effigy of Assumption was burned. After a short pep talk by Coach Smalling and a few cheers around the bonfire, the snake dance began to take shape and pre- game activities came to an end. Festivities began again as the parade was held at 2:00 Friday after- noon. It was at this time the floats were judged, but they were not announced until the half-time intermission of the game that night. The Junior class received first place award with their Rehearsing For A Kill, and second place went to the Sophomore class for their Out Action Will Crush The Comets. Friday night rolled around and the Illiopolis Pirates met with the Assumption Comets to welcome a 6 to 0 Homecoming victory. The formal coronation took place on Saturday night as Pam Pickel and Mike Gass were crowned by the retiring queen and king Wende Allen and Jim Sheward. Their attendants were Susie Bliler, Mary Forester, Martha Hemp, Janet Hills, Sharon Moore, Don Gordy, Mike Kapper, Gary Leonard, Larry Leonard and Steve Leonard. We, Susan Bliler and Janet Hills, will the freshman girls the same persis- tence for the next three years that they have had their first year in trying to catch a man (or anything). We, the senior girls, will Susy Blakeman some use for the appendage in her mouth other than talking. I, Steve Leonard, will Mr. Weber his own car to drive to school, thus, if the car he is driving now will last until he can get his own car to run. 64 CLASS PROPHECY The year is 1985 and we find the class of '71 quite involved in the space program. They have finally succeeded in making arrangements to have a class reunion here on the moon. The first to arrive, in her new hot pink space capsule, is Mary Lynn Stengel. She is well known as Single-Stengel among the jet set, as well as No. 1 of the 10 best dressed in the Universe. She can't stay long because her chauffeur, Janet Hills, is get- ting impatient. Yes, Janet got so much fun driving Cousin Ted around that she decided to use her experience. Here come Toby Baxter and Chuck Johnson, two great celebrities. They have gained their fame and fortune as models for Mr. Johns School of Beauty Culture. They hope to become top stylists someday too! Ah, yes, it must be Laurie Burke, the famous journalist that publishes the Rolling Walrus which is now a most popular pre-school magazine. Great competition for Sesame Street! Unfortunately, Don Gordy won't be here. He is such a faithful em- ployee of Laurie's that he stayed home to set up the presses for the latest issue of their noted periodical. Sharon Moore, top reporter, is here to get all the news. True, her shorthand is fast, but she never takes down anything she doesn't understand (maybe that explains why she just carries around one piece of paper and a dried up ink pen!). Here are the top salesmen of the class, Larry and Gary Leonard. They sell auto in- surance and their motto is: NOBODY is safe until EVERYBODY has insurance. An- other member of their staff is Linda Lamb. She gets those more difficult clients to co-operate ! Susie Bliler and Dewain Dodson are familiar faces on T.V. now. Susie represents the Ultra-Brite Corp. with that sexy smile of hers. Dewain is well suited for his Lava hand soap commercials too ! ZOOM . . . ZOOM! ! It's Mike Collision Cook and John Bumper Bruntjen! ! These careful drivers are co-champions of the Country Strip Drag Races. We always knew they were fast movers, after all Martin Stahl was the trainer. Mike Gass has it good these days. He and his family live in a nice new home in Illiopolis and they have the best road in the country. In case you haven't guessed, Pam Rogers has followed her father's steps and is the road commissioner. Looks like J. C. Penny's is doing well. Their top stylist is Alice Galloway, and their best buyer is Rhea Lohiede. Here too is their model of this falls newest fashions, Denise Ballinger. Looks like the favored colors this year will be Bever Brown and Bold Black again. The two Merry-Mary's were here but have left. Mary Forster and Mary McGee are now world famous cheerleaders but the town watchman, Chris Havener, had to arrest Mary McGee because she knocked out Joe Frazier at a Pirate tourney. Through her success in her food service classes, Pam Pickel has made great fortune as the manager of (naturally) a Pickel factory. A1 McDonald has also risen to the title of manager. After years of service, he has taken over Zim's Supermart. Between him and his top cashiers, Donna Underwood and Doty Shartzer things seem to be running quite smoothly. Wow! Art LeBeane, the famous wrestler, and his rough-touch trainer, Steve Leon- ard, are here. Through Steve's coaching and much of his own talent Art has made the stale-mate a famous hold! Here are two strangers--Dennis Barnes and Shirley Smith! We so seldom saw them in high school that we hardly recognized them now! Linda Thomas, now a famous singer, has taken the place of Mama Cass in today's singing circle. Here come Molly McKean and Martha Hemp. These two are famous for their act- ing as well as being leaders of the present day Women's Liberation. They owe all their background to that great English teacher--Mrs. Allen! ! The meeting is coming to a close now as Larry Daniels, noted orator of Illiopolis High is getting the entertainment started! 65 ROW 1 from left to right: M. Hemp, M. McKean, S. Bliler, L. Lamb, S. We re- ceived a first place for our float . . . ,rWe're Rehearsing for a Kill. Money was made with a soc hop and candle sales. But the two main money projects were the concession stands and the magazine sale. (Our magazine sale broke all previous records). Prom was held on May 8 at the Sherton Inn with the theme, Out in the Country and the music was provided by The Sounds Unlimited. Our class officers this year were: President, Chuck Bisbee; Vice-President, Greg Adyt; Secretary, Janet Roher; Treasurer, Karen Cook. We want to thank Miss Lawson and Mrs. Hassebrock for their help and guidance throughout the year. CLASS OF 1972 SOPHOMORE CLASS The Sophomore Class began and ended a good year with forty-two mem- bers. Our officers were: Ed Bliler, President, Mike Dobrinsky, Vice-Pres- ident, Vicki Kozcwara, Secretary; and Beth Bliler, Treasurer. Our biggest money-making project was our candy sales. We also had a soc hop after one of the basketball games. Our class was represented well in sports, drama, and many of the organiza- tions. Cheerleaders from our class were Michele McDermott, Varsity and Mitzi Ramsey, Jr. Varsity. We were very proud of our float, Our Action will Crush the Comets, which received second place. We would like to thank our sponsors, Mrs. Rice and Mrs. Allen, for all their help. Our officers were: Paul Mason, Pres.; Mark Stone, V. Pres.; Karen Keleher, Sec.; and Martha Dale, Treas. We got off to a slow start with our Homecoming float, Victory Is Our Bag. Even though it didn't place, we had a lot of fun building it. We raised money with a bake sale in the fall and a soc hop during the basketball season. We would like to thank our sponsors, Mr. Nieman and Mr. Fitzpatrick, for bring- ing us through our first year at ICHS. Mr. Fitzpatrick, Sponsor Paul Mason, Pres. The Pirates did not suffer a defeat or tie in eight battles this year and now have not been defeated in their last fifteen contests. The season started off with a 13--0 non-conference win over Pawnee. Then the Pirates returned home for a couple of contests; the first, a 20—8 win over Niantic, and the second, a 6--0 homecoming victory over Assumption. The Pirates then went on to score three convincing victories; 35--0 against Maroa-Forsyth, 13—0 against Lovington, and 40—0 against Bethany. The last home game proved to be a satisfying 27--6 win over Moweaqua. Then the Pirates met the Macon Ironmen in the contest for the conference championship. Combining offensive efforts on a 90-yard pass from Kirk Johnson to Mike Gass and a 62-yard pass from Johnson to Tyler Lyon, plus a rugged goal-line defensive stand behind linebacker Don Sheller and tackle Mike Kapper, the Pirates pulled out a 12--8 victory and the Conference Crown to top off another beauti- ful season. For the first time in the history of the school the team posted more than twenty victories in a season, finishing the season with a record of 21 wins and 6 losses. Other firsts include a Sangamon County Championship (the first in 46 years), the first District Tournament Championship ever, and winning the first Regional Tournament game in the history of the school. The squad was led by two Seniors; John Bruntjen, who scored the winning basket in the finals of the Sangamon County Tournament and Steve Leonard, whose defensive play sparked a District Tournament Championship. Other squad members were Phil Blake- man, Jared Carroll, Terry Kapper, Chuck Kilhoffer, Tyler Lyon, Don Pickel, Mike Dobrinsky, and Andy Kilhoffer. The Pirates opened the 1970-71 season with a 69--60 loss to Findlay, followed by vic- tories over Tower Hill and Williamsville. Entering the County Tournament in January, the Pirates posted their first tournament victory in 13 years by beating Auburn 55 to 37. Rochester was the next victory (48 to 44) and in the championship game the final score was 62—61 over Riverton. The Pirates finished the season with a six game winning streak plus wins in the Dis- trict Tournament over Cerro Gordo 68 to 51 and Argenta-Oreana 66 to 51. They moved into Regional Tournament play at Eisenhower against MacArthur. The 1970-71 Pirates then became the first team to beat a Decatur school when they defeated Mac- Arthur by a score of 64 to 61. The season ended with a 76 to 56 loss to Eisenhower in the semifinals of the Regional Tournament. 92 FRONT ROW: G. Leonard, M. Rogers, M. Stacey, C. Johnson, R. Gass, B. Lybarger, D. Sheller.
