The Illiopolis Chapter is one of the leading chapters in its section. Being one of the better Livestock and Meat Judging Chapters we have participated in local and state contests. Our chapter was represented at the State and National Conventions during the past year. National F.F.A. week was observed here by an assembly in the school with the presentation of a banner to the school. Also at Section 14 Foundation Awards Banquet held in Springfield, Martin Stahl won the Sectional Ornamental Horticulture Award and Dennis Barnes was accepted for a State Farmer Award. 15 F.F.A. The first of the year brought a continuation of last year's popcorn business and proved to be the Council's main source of income for this school year. A student lounge was created this year by the Stu- dent Council. The old film room was turned into a place for the students to go and talk, drink Pepsi, and just relax. The Illiopolis Student Council was also involved with activities of the Meridian Conference Association of Student Councils, such as the student exchange pro- gram, and the Meridian Conference Queen contest. At a mid-year M.C.A.S.C. meeting, plans were discussed for having a dance for all Meridian Conference Schools. 17 Chorus FRONT ROW: S. Bliler, P. Pritchett, G. Hancock, W. Thomas, M. Rogers, M. The 1969 Homecoming festivities got off to a roaring start with the lighting of the annual bonfire. The cheerleaders led everyone to a great fighting spirit and Coach Smalling gave a run down on the Friday night game against Maroa. This year, in order for the King and Queen to have a longer reign, they were announced at the bon- fire. Wende Allen was voted Queen, and Jim Sheward King. Attendants for the Queen were Leslie Have- ner, Diane Seay, Nancy Fieldbinder, Liz Whitten, and Nancy Blakeman. Attendants for the King were Mark Dobrinsky, Marc Sanner, Randy Lyon, Bill Booker, and John Carroll. Everyone shouted with great Pirate spirit as the Trojan dummy was thrown onto the fire and the snake dance began. The Homecoming Parade was held on Friday afternoon, with the winning floats announced at half time at the football game that night. The Freshman were awarded the School Trophy for their float We Artichoke Em. The American Legion Trophy was awarded to the Seniors for Victory is a Peel- ing. The theme for the Homecoming dance was Cherish with a setting to remind uf of our childhood memories. The highlight of the evening came with the crowning of the Queen, Wende Allen, and King, Jim Sheward by the 1968 retiring King and Queen, Kelly Sanner and Jane Carroll. All in all, it was a great Homecoming victory. Congratulations to the Pirates and Coach Smalling for a mighty Trojan defeat! 28 Freshmen .. . No. 1 “Snaps” What? All the roses are frozen? You only attend High School once. So it's important that this four year experience be as rich, productive and enjoyable as possible. We as the graduating Seniors now look back on these four years and think of times we will never forget. In the fall of 1966 we as freshmen, entered the halls of ICHS, only to be disappointed in hearing that we were to be the first class to bypass initiation. But our spirits rallied as Homecoming drew near and we proved our- selves by winning the Lion's Club Trophy for our float, We'll Bee On Top. Class officers were Nyla Peyton-- President, Leslie Havener--V. President, Diane Seay--Secretary, and Paul Hayden--Treasurer. Returning as Sophomores we were led by Marc Sanner--President, Liz Whitten--V. President, Nancy Field- binder--Secretary, and Bill Booker—Treasurer. Our Homecoming float, We're Rootin' For A Victory went down with defeat. We followed Homecoming with a Christmas Holiday Dance and this gave us a start on our Junior Year. On becoming upperclassmen, much more responsibility was placed in our hands. We were in charge of the Homecoming Parade and this year we found it was Time To Wind Up With A Victory with our second place float. Money was made with bake sales, car washes, soc hops, and concession stands. Two of our biggest money making projects were the school record magazine sale and candy sale. Our money was well spent on Prom, May 3rd, with Camelot as our theme. The Light Brigade furnished the music. Our Junior Class officers were Diane Seay--President, John Carroll--V. President, Nancy Blakeman—Secretary, and Pam Patterson--Treasurer. After deciding our destination for class trip, FLORIDA, and establishing our monetary goal, we entered the race against time. Our first project was a Homecoming float, A Victory Is A Peeling. Next we sold candy followed by selling Coke at ICHS games, Christmas wrap, soc hop, TV raffle, bakesale, and a rummage sale. Class officers were Carol Bruntjen--President, Paul Hayden--V. President, Leslie Havener--Secretary, and Pam Patterson--Treasurer. With the beginning of Spring came the end of projects for our trip to FLORIDA! With these four great years of school behind us, we now look confidently toward the future. 46 Preparing for College . . . We are reporting from the Democratic Convention in Chicago and are meeting delegates from all over the nation. Among the delegates from Illinois gathered here is the 1970 graduating class of Illiopolis High School; a glance around the great hass reveals to us many of the school chums talking over old times: Bill Booker and Randy Lyon have built up successful occupations. Randy, district sales manager for Friendly Chev- rolet, made his way to the top with hard work and long hours. A tour of the car lot will reveal the employees follow- ing in Randy's own footsteps; sleeping in car trunks, numerous coffee breaks, extended lunch hours, and afternoon rides are all company policies. Bill is a truck driver with Allied Van Lines. He has a tough route via Macon, Warrensburg, Illiopolis, and Tri- City. Bill carries a lot of freight and the hours are rough, too! Joan Cook and Rita Rogers are here representing the BCA (Bathroom Changing Association). They are working for radical reforms in high school bathrooms nation-wide. Christina Budzen and Larry Mifflin are here with the in-crowd this evening--the Hollywood jet set. Chris and Larry have recently finished filming I Am Curious, Purple , Walt Disney's first X-rated movie. Wende Allen and Sara Bower recently formed A1-Bower Wig International and are present to view the showing of a new line of wig technique worn by Donna Griffin, political candidate for the Women's Liberation Movement. Wende dyes each strand a different color, then Sara tries to match the hair with one of her six hundred falls that she gets each year for Christmas from her mother. What an effect! ! Paul Hayden is walking around the hass toasting each candidate good luck. He recently held a B.Y.O.B. party, honoring the Great Crusader, Billy Graham. Paul has come up in the world since he bought a whiskey distillery in the hills of Kentucky. We see Marc Sanner and Pam Patterson standing together; Marc and Pam are understudies for Laugh-In's Tyrone Horn-Eye and Gladys Ormphby. Marc is soon to leave the show for he's engaged to Ruby Begonia, but Pam has her famous fly act to fall back on. In charge of security at this convention is Mike Malson. Mike was promoted from a sheriff's post in Mississippi to Head Security Officer because of his outstanding achievements. Mike is always prepared; he carries with him three revolvers, two rifles, a submachine gun, and a string of hand grenades. Nancy Fieldbinder is here reporting for Hagweed Associates with assistant, Carol Hurst. Carol oils the typewriters and sharpens pencils for Nancy, who has to write many, many letters for her boss, Rag J. Chris Berry and Bob Tommons are here to spread the teachings of their new cult, worshipping the motorcycle. Each morning, they face their bikes to the east, blow down and repeat this chant: Allah, Allah, Zuki, Eagle Allah, Allah, Pickle Cycle. Lonnie Scales just screeched up in his Super Colossal Edsel. Lonnie has spent his entire life perfecting this fine piece of machinery. His one goal is to leap the Grand Canyon before he quietly retires to his bicycle repair shop. In the crowd we seek Mark Dobrinsky who is leading the Free the Polish Nation March. He will be passing out Perserve the Pollock buttons the entire evening. With his mop in hand, Custodian Ronnie Ketchum, mingles with the crowd in the great hall. Ronnie is the author of two books on the best-seller list: How To Add Variety To Your Cleaning Life and 101 Ways to Dust a Register. Three delegates from the mid-western section of our country just walked in. Liz Whitten and Leslie Havener are the owners of a huge livestock spread in Niantic. They raise their livestock to play in football games and to show in rodeos. Carol Bronco Buster Bruntjen rides these fine animals in her Flying Hoves Routine. Terri Buckner still composes famous lyrics in high school short hand classes. She dictates all her letters to the tune of Good Morning Star Shine. John Carroll and Bob Grossman have their own private business, the Grossee Snake Training School. This is a home for rejected snakes; it's a prospering money-making business, but Bob will soon have to go it alone, for John's ulcer is acting up again; what with wine, women and fast living in his high school days. Nancy Blakeman and Jim She ward, representing the National High School Sweethearts Chapter are here looking for prospects for their Computer Dating Service. Joe Kilhoffer has applied to their service, but who wants a mad sci- entist who blows up chemistry labs with acid, mutilates fetal pigs, and burns garbage trucks? (Joe likes skunks better anyway.) Rodney Mitchell is on tour in Chicago after finishing a two year engagement playing drums at the Mt. Auburn Teen Town. It seems like they just couldn't get enough of him there! J. L. Rogers has followed the family tradition and become head cook at Illiopolis High School. He's a whiz with cheese and raisins. Power House Jim Pope is one of the leading candidates at tonight's convention. His chief advisor is Tom Robert- son who writes all of Jim's campaign speeches and slogans, the most famous being, Everything's in the bag with Jimmy and Power House Pope packs a Punch. Diane Seay is the other leading candidate at this tense nomination. Diane makes lots of campaign promises, but all she has to say tonight is, If I'm elected ... I Will! If not elected ... I Won't. The evening is drawing to a close. Party leader Dave Sheller, who secured this position because of his good looks, wit, and ability to drive a car announces the party's nominee. It's . . . Dark horse candidate, Stokely Carmichael! ! ! ! As the convention ends, and people file out of the hall, the 1970 IHS graduates say good-bye and promise to meet again in four years. Perhaps then tKeir day of glory will come. 53 “Daytona Beach The natives are restless. The Magical Mystery Tour! Illiopolis Mermaids Bods beautiful Soaking in Those Florida Rays! Out Dutiful Hummer The Mod Squad 69 A THLETICS Football The 1969 Pirates, under the guidance of Coach Smalling and Bob Moose Handlin, started the season with hopes of their third football crown in four years. Captains were elected and practice got underway. Bill Booker and Randy Lyon were chosen as captain and co-captain respectively. After three weeks of practicing we were ready for our first game against Pawnee. After a hard fought game in which we had three punts blocked within our 20 yard line, Pawnee came up with the upset of 14--10. The second Illiopolis traveled to arch-rival Niantic for a game which some said would decide the conference championship. The Pirates with a poor mental attitude in the first half were losing 8--0. The second half the Pirates, who were faster and in better condition, tied it up at 8--8 with Bill Booker's 35 yard run and Jim She- ward's catch in the end zone for 2 points. The Pirates then took their hopes to salvage the season to Assumption. The Pirates defense played an out- standing game by holding Assumption scoreless. John Carroll and Chuck Kilohoffer each had 17 tackles to lead the Pirates to a 6--0 victory. The Pirates then proceeded to get ready for the Maroa Trojans and Homecoming. After a scoreless first quarter Randy Lyon ran 17 yards for the first touchdown. Sanner then went over for the point after touchdown to make it 8--0 at half time. In the second half the Pirates defense dug in and Bill Booker made a fifteen yard run, thus with the result; Pirates 14, Trojans 0. Illiopolis then traveled over to Lovington for what they termed as.the hardest hitting game all year in which the Pirates pulled out a 14--8 victory. Bethany was Illiopolis' next victim as the Pi- rates rolled to a 40--6 victory. Randy Lyon, Bill Booker and Jim Sheward each had 2 touchdowns. Illiopolis then romped over Mowequa 34--6 to give them at least a share of the conference title with Niantic. Macon then came to Illiopolis for the season finale. On a foggy and rained soaked turf it took the Pirates the first half to get started. With Bill Booker's two second half touchdowns, the Pirates pulled out a 14--14 tie and the Meridian Confer- ence Title. 71 Captain and Co-Captain Bill Booker Halfback Jim Sheward End Randy Lyon Halfback We’re No . . .
