The chapter sponsored, again this year, a film series which centered around student interest. Each month a student was selected Student of the Month--based on re- cognition of the standards of the society. In May, the chapter held the Golden Laurel banquet which brought together the members and their guests. The Student of the Year was named and awarded at this event. TOP M. Hemp P. Rogers D. Barnes L. Coach Haywood CROSS Larry Leonard Chuck Johnson Bill Forster Jim Stahl John Bruntjen Chris Havener Martin Stahl Denny Lybarger COUNTRY The Pirate Cross-Country team in- creased their wins from one last year to two this year. The squad of eight parti- cipated in fifteen area meets including the District at Beardstown and the Mt. Zion Invitational. All of the members lettered this year. One highlight this year was the first place awarded Denny Lybarger over the field of fifteen at the meet during the half-time of the Macon- Illiopolis football game. The real high point was the brawl in the locker room after the Lakeview meet when the team succeeded in slashing Coach Haywood's arm which required a number of stitches. We thank you, Coach, even though it may not be apparent. Placed in top ten at Mt. Zion Invitationa Cross Country Track Meet. □ i, MIEHTY R PIRRTE5 The Pirates had a disappointing season last year, since we won only one game in eight starts. Our defense was one of the best in the Meridian Conference, since we gave up only 38 points before the last two games. Rich Graves and Bill Etherton made the All-Conference first team, while Max Reeder and Kelly Sanner were selected for honor- able mention. Next season looks promising because there will be 25 lettermen returning to the squad, including the whole backfield. We would like to thank Mr. Smalling for his excellent coaching instruction and Mr. Orr for his able assistance. Senior Float nrrni L U' HDMECDMINE ’bR Homecoming '68 was marked with a number of new happenings for I.H.S. Most important of the new items was the announcement of the King and Queen, Kelly and Jane, at the Bonfire on Thurs- day, so they could reign over all the homecoming activities instead of just a half hour at the Coronation Dance. Activities were kicked off after a week's preparation with a pep rally on Thursday, at which the speechtclass performed the Zit Skit. That night the king and queen were announced at the bonfire. Lighting the fire was per- formed by the king, Kelly, after a mock-funeral procession that ended with the burning of the effigy of Assumption. All h---- broke loose. A snake dance followed, which ended at the site of another new thing for I.H.S., a street dance. The Rubber Band from Springfield provided music and we students street danced right in front of the grade school. The annual parade was held on Friday afternoon, with fairly good floats. The game that night was lost to Assumption, 13-6, but we still had SPIRIT, that's what counts. The con- clusion to the week, the Coronation Dance, was held Saturday night, with a mediocre band, The Vast Difference, providing the music. Love is Blue was our theme this year, which the seniors complimented with silver and blue decoration. A thanks to the many people involved in making that home- coming one to remember. This lyric echoed through the halls of I.H.S. for weeks before the Drama Club presented the musical, The Sound of Music to the community and the surrounding area. The success of the production was a worthy tribute to the cast and crew - they worked long and hard for it. Out- standing performances were given by Leslie Havener, who played Maria - Bill Etherton, who portrayed Captain Von Trapp - Sara Bower, who played the Mother Abbess - Martha Hemp, who played Elsa, and Paul Hayden who portrayed Max. Mark Smith was student stage manager, and with the able assistance of Chris Berry, kept things moving smoothly behind the scenes. The Senior Dramatics Award was presented to Karen Witts and Mark Smith. The Drama Club also presented awards to those who had received the necessary points to qualify - as a result of contributions made in dramatics 1968-69. The Bar B.Q. was enjoyed by all. It was a long wait, but dancing to the beat of The Lykes of Us was worth it. They were great.' Two big money projects were the school-record magazine sale and the candy sale. Our Prom, with Camelot for its theme, was held on May 3 in the gymnasium, with music provided by The Ligh;- Brigade. Max Reeder, Tres. Jane Carroll, Sec. Keith Cross, Vice-Pres. Mr. Daebelliehn, Sponsor CLASS HISTORY As we, the Senior class of 1969, look back on our four years of high school, we think of times we will never forget. In the fall of '65, thirty-four unsure Freshmen entered the halls of I.H.S. for the first time. Being the last class to experience initiation, we really got the treatment from the Seniors. Our class officers that year were P. Blakeman - Pres., D. Johnson - V-Pres., R. Graves - Treas., and P. Craig - Sec. Carr-ous-al to Victory won us first place in the homecoming float entries, and also that year, Jane Carroll and Rich Graves were crowned Queen and King of Hearts. Returning as Sophomores, we were under the leadership of R. Graves - Pres., J. Carroll - V-Pres .jP. Blakeman - Treas., and T. Keleher - Sec. Our homecoming float, We're Wishing We'll Have a Victory, didn't prove to be a winner. Patty Blakeman was crowned Queen of Hearts that year. We started our moneymaking projects with candy sales that gave us something to start our Junior year. Our Junior year proved to be interesting! We had many responsibilities ahead of us with the homecoming parade and prom, and we were able to fulfill them with the leadership of P. Blakeman - Pres., P. Craig - V-Pres., R. Graves - Treas., and J. McDonald - Sec. Our float, A Hare Raising Victory, won for us the American Legion Trophy. With the sale of candy and magazines, we were able to sponsor our prom at the Elks Club. The theme was Oriental Fantasy, and with class coopera- tion, it proved to be a success. Also that year, we chose our class colors, royal blue and silver, flower, white orchid, and motto, Success Comes in Cans, Failure Comes in Can'ts. Our Senior year was most exciting of all especially after deciding to take our class trip to Florida! To raise the money, we had chilli suppers, bake sales, car washes, chilli suppers, two rummage sales, a scrap drive, chilli suppers, the Mardi-Gras, a rigatoni dinner, concession stands, and more chilli suppers. Our homecoming float, It'll Be a Honey of a Victory, won the school award and the dance, Love is Blue, proved very successful (although a little wet)r We started a new tradition that year with the crowning of King and Queen, Jane and Kelly, at the bonfire and having them reign over all the homecoming activities. SENIOR CLASS TRIP At 4:00 a.m. on May 13, twenty-four excited Seniors boarded the school bus for the first miles of their Florida trip. Mr. Grady drove them as far as Caseyville where they then got on their chartered bus. Arriving Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. after much riding and much eating, the tired Seniors began their tour of St. Augustine. This included such things as a wax museum, the Fountain of Youth, and a visit to Marineland where they were entertained by porpoises. Then, they continued on to Daytona Beach which turned out to be the highlight of the trip. The beach, the boardwalk, hondas, and the swimming pool were thoroughly enjoyed. At 7:30 a.m. on Friday morning, twenty-four sun-burned Seniors were again on the bus along with the chaperones and were headed for Cypress Gardens, Busch Gardens, and finally Silver Springs where the night was spent. Saturday morning, they took their last tour on the Glass-Bottom-Boat and at 12:30 boarded the bus for the return trip. The Seniors arrived home at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday morning full of stories to tell their friends and families. It will include many new facilities that will add a lot to I.H.S. Some of the features are: a 100 X 89 foot gymnasium, locker rooms, a band room, thirteen classrooms, a large library for the grade school, an all-purpose room cafeteria, kitchen facilities, a boiler room to serve both old and new sections of the school, a blacktopped parking lot, and its own sewage disposal plant. One real new item is the Mansard roof canopy’over all of the new building. This is the first it has been used in this area. Construction should be completed in time for the 1969-70 school year.
