Senior Class History Where has time flown? Was it only a few months ago that we seniors began our final yea;-? As we think back, these four years have been ones we'H never forget. We entered as freshmen, characteristically looked down upon by upper classmen and -labeled trouble-makers by our teachers. We proved we weren't down yet by placing second in float competition with We Auto Win. Our class officers were Bill Seay, Pres.; Kathy Bliler, Vice-Pres.; Donna Whitten, Sec.; Ellen Wurl, Treas. As sophomores, we entered under the leadership of Rick Wilbam, Pres.; Sheryl Hartleroad, Vice -Pres.; Bruce Moore, Treas,; Jo Peyton, Sec. Fifteen out of nineteen of our boys participated in athletics, and over half of the class was involve! with the musical. We proved our responsibility by ini tiating a candy sale, the result of which left us a sizeable treasury to take on to junior year. Our -unior year was filled with many rewarding activities. We were awarded first place for out float Beat 'Em to the Ball'.' Our magazine sales enabled us to sponsor prom' at t' e Decatur Club. Total class initiative-made Paris By Night a success. Our class officers for that year were Jo Peyton, Pres.; Kathy Bliler, Vice Pres.; Ellen Wurl, Sec.; Bill Seay, Treas. Our representatives for sports totaled 14 out of 17. Again, over half of the class participated in the musical. Our senior year was a dream come true. Under the leadership of Bill Pickrell, Pres.; Bill Seay, Vice Pres.; Ellen Wurl, Sec.; Dick Ketcham, Treas.; and Mr. Daebelliehn, class sponsor, we worked and slaved at every- thing from bake sales to rummage sales to our Mardi Grss with only one thouhgt--New Orleans or Bust’. Besides the excitement of our tr ip to New Orleans, the seniors took first place with their float Snoopy Guns for the Pirates. Our theme for Homecoming was Yesterday with decorations fitted to an old-time speakeasy. Sports representatives totaled 13 out of 18. Most all of the seniors were involved with dramatics. All the seniors can undoubtedly say--”They were four very good years. The Junior Class Officers and Sponsors are: Mr. Weber Jeanette McDonald, Sec. Peggy Craig, V. Pres. Junior The Junior Class sold magazines, can- dy, had a bake sale, a soc hop, and held concession stands at the Jr. High basket- ball games. Ketchami, Coach Smalling FOOTBALL The Illiopolis Pirates were out after another successful season with Coach Jerry Smalling at the helm. He had coached these boys since they were freshmen and now was the time for them to show him what they had learned. The Pirates started out with a rain soaked victory over Pawnee 13-0. Adapted to the rain, the Pirates played archrival, Niantic. The Pirates won 14-0. Traveling to Mt. Zion for our next game, we went down to our first loss 27-0. The Pirates, shrugging off the bad taste of defeat, went to Assumption to face a strong Comet team. The mighty Pirates chalked up another victory by a score of 26-14 Homecoming rolled around and the Pirates played host to Maroa. Again we came up with a win with the score of 26-0. Bethany was our next opponent. The Pirates managed to pull off a 13-0 win without the aid of several key players. Visibility was poor but that didn't stop the Pirates. They spoiled Lovington's Homecoming by a score of 13-0. The big show-down between the unbeaten and the unscored upon Mowequa Indians and the Illiopolis Pirates came to a climax on October 25. It was a long, hard-fought battle and the Pirates were rewarded with a 13-0 victory and a share of the Meridian Conference Championship. The only obstacle in claiming the Championship was Macon. They came to blows and the Pirates wound up on top. The score was 14-0. This gave the Pirates an undisputed Championship title for the second consecutive year. After a pep talk from Coach Smalling, the Trojan dummy was thrown into the fire. All the while, the cheerleaders were keeping the spirit of the crowd high. The Homecoming parade was held on Friday afternoon, with the winning floats announced at half time at the football game that night. The Seniors were awarded the School Trophy for their float, Snoopy Guns for the Pirates, The American Legion Trophy was awarded to the Juniors for We'll Multiply That Score for a Hare Raising Victory. Congratulations to the Pirates and Coach Smalling for a great Homecoming victory! The theme for the Homecoming dance was Yesterday, with a Roaring 20's setting. The band was a swinging group from Chicago called the Children of Genesis. The highlight of the evening came with the crowning of the Queen, Jo Peyton, and King, Bill Seay by retiring King and Queen of 1966, Carl Fieldbinder and Patsy Pickrell. Auburn District 2-3 SENIOR CLASS TRIP The highlight of our senior year was undoubtedly the trip to New Orleans. We had worked all year to finance the trip, and at last the day arrived for us to depart. We traveled by bus, driving overnight, and got into the city at noon the next day. Our first glimpses of New Orleans as we drove through were that it was typical o any big city. Later, on our tour through the French Quarter, we realiz- ed that New Orleans was a special kind of city. Characterized by beautiful and graceful architecture, uhe buildings in the Quarter exemplify the typical French atmosphere. From New Orleans, the next stop was Pass Christian, where we spent a day enjoying the sun, sand, and seaspray. A shopping spree to Biloxi and an excursion boat ri ie : j c wonderful trip.
