Pirate PUBLISHED BY THE YEARBOOK STAFF OF ILLIOPOLIS HIGH SCHOOL eviration We dedicate this yearbook to Miss Betty Sommer. Without her numerous extra hours to guide and aid us, the publishing of this yearbook would not have been possible. She has been a friend as well as a teacher to all of us on the yearbook staff. Board of Education John H Bruntjen, Earl Malson, John J Dobrinsky, William I, Peters, Lester H. Miller, Supt. Wayne J. Maxheimer, Haldon W. Bliler, Herbert W. Casey The school board had the Spanish, biology, and chemistry laboratories remodeled for the beginning of this school year. New fire doors and a fire escape were installed for the high school building. Equipment purchased for the physical education departments by the school board included field hockey, badminton, tennis, and football equipment. The school board election was held April 11, 1964. The incumbents, William Peters and John Dobrinsky, did not seek re-election. Bill Etherton, Don Whitten, and Prosper Tournear were candidates for election with Don Whitten and Bill Etherton being elected as the new school board members. Later in the year further plans for remodeling were made. These included Mr. Howard's office and the high school library. Administration Lester H. Miller, B. of Ed,, M.S. Senior Class History August of 1960 brought the dazed freshman class of 31 members to the halls of I. H. S. Although we were the recipients of the typical torment by the Seniors on the dreaded initia- tion, we survived. Class officers were: President, Jim Whitehead; Vice-President, Sharon Daubs; Secretary, Margo Young; and Treasurer, Bette Crayne. Student council Representatives were Sharon Daubs and Connie Patterson. Our Homecoming float theme was We Drag 'em Down. We had a school carnival booth, The Hitching Post, which won first prize. We made it back in August of 1961 with 32 members. Class officers were: Paige Baxter, President; Denzil Howard, Vice-President; Judy Wright, Secretary; and Sharon Daubs, Treasurer. Larry Casey and Denzil Howard were Student Council Representatives. Our Homecoming Float that year was entitled We'll Raid 'Em of Victory. We had a booth for the Yearbook Carnival for Shaving a Balloon , and we held a bake sale at Ross's in April. August, 1962, brought back our class of 29 strong. Class officers were: President, Mar- go Young; Vice-President, Martha Stahl; Secretary, Sharon Kapper; and Treasurer, Joe Miller. Student Council Representatives were Paige Baxter, Martha Stahl, and Denzil Howard. We began our year by having a Curtis Magazine Campaign to raise money for sponsoring the Junior-Senior Prom. We were in charge of the Homecoming Parade. Our float theme was Hot Dog, We're the Wiener . Other activities included a bake sale, car wash, sock hop, and a booth at the Halloween Party. The Prom theme was Wonderland by Night. The Prom was held at the Elk's Club in Springfield on May 4, 1963. Judy Wright attended Girls' State and Joe Miller attended Boys’ State. Our climax year of high school at good 'ole X. H. S. came in August of 1963. We were twenty strong. Class officers were President, Judy Wright; Vice-President, Sharon Daubs; Secretary, Denzil Howard; and Treasurer, Carolyn Thomas. Student Council representatives were Paige Baxter and Sharon Kapper. We had the great pleasure of bestowing our trivial commands upon the new freshman class. Our Homecoming float then was Well'll Win by a Great Martian . We operated the candy machine and also were in charge of a concession at all the home basketball games of the high school. We also held two bake sales. For our class trip we chose to go to the Wagon Wheel Resort near Rockton, Illinois, on May 16. Judy Wright received the D. A. R. award. The Class Valedictorian was Danny Hildebrandt and Salutatorian was Paige Baxter Hall. Baccalaureate came on May 24 followed by Commence- ment on May 29. Class of 1964 Senior Class Prophecy After many days of searching, we find Larry Casey in his well-concealed Bunny Hutch . Larry is successfully employed as editor of Playboy Magazine following the recent arrest of Hugh Heffner, his father-in-law. Next we encounter Patty Gordy. She is Illiopolis's own Cleopatra. Patty is also famous for her book, My Many Loves , and the famed owner of her Patty Wagon , the newest convertible out. Jim Timmons is now an actor in Hollywood currently starring as Traybor in ''Way-Out on Thursday nights. He got his start in the Junior-Senior play at old ICHS. Margo Stretch Young is now traveling with the Hazel Walker basketball team. She plays guard and is the smallest girl on the team at 6’11 . Sharon Peppermint Grossman is now the latest at the Peppermint Lounge twisting up a storm in her bright orange slacks and lavender mink. Isn't she the wildest? Sharon Barfield, as we find her, has followed in her father's footsteps. She is now the janitor at Illiopolis High School. She has even taken up smoking a cigar to follow her famous father. Now we find Paige Hall who is the head brain surgeon in Chicago. She is also noted for her marriage counseling at Carver Junior High School. Here is Patty Hancock. We see that she has extinguished Mr. Carter's flame of love for our own Miss Burgess. What about Mr. Carter? Well, Mr. Carter, Denzil Howard, is the Blue Ribbon Dog Tick Picker of Illiopolis. This job keeps Denzil very busy, as does his seven children. Here is Martha Stahl. She is still a student at the University of Illinois after 36 years. We wonder whether her subjects are that difficult or whether there are other interests. Of course, we have heard of many things happening on this beautiful campus. We find Don Dale in New York. He has a famous business on the corner of Walk and Don't Walk —pushing dope to unsuspecting kiddies. Isn't Don the Greatest?I!!I!!!I!!! Unsuspectingly we find Ella Robertson who is now the President of Ross's, Inc. She also has a new invention— Throw Away Clothes . Wear them once and throw them away. It took us many days to locate Carolyn Thomas. Carolyn has been very busy for the last few years. She has been searching for her long-lost boyfriend somewhere in the Sahara Desert. She can be seen every day crawling through the desert on her hands and knees calling his name. Several times she thought she had found him, but it turned out to be only a mirage. Sandi Poole has found her life-long ambition. She is the only angora dealer in Xlliopoli8. She is also the All-American Ring Wrapper. She got her practice during her days at old ICHS. We find Sharon Kapper is now happily married to Ralph Grossman. Butch has provided him and his wife with Twin Tractors . They take their tractors out only on Sunday for a joyride through town. We wonder what they will do with their children--13 tractors alike????????!!!!:!!!: We have found Josefa Budzen now employed as head waitress at the Space Needle Restaurant in Seattle. One of her other duties is to polish the 500-foot needle with Comet every two weeks. Joe Miller is still second best in track, but now he is the second best 880 man in the world. As usual, the person who beats Joe is the best 880 man, the famed Lawson from Tri-City. After many years of struggle, Judy Wright has finally attained the job of head diaper changer at Fix-It Hospital. Judy is extremely happy now that she has fulfilled her life-long ambition. Danny Hildebrandt is a famed scientist, chemist, and inventor. Danny's latest invention is that of Instant H2O, where all you have to do is add water and stir. Danny also helps Mr. Howard say lithium instead of litmus. Last but not least we find Pat Hughes. It was difficult to find Pat because she leads such a sheltered life. We find Pat spends much time with Larry Casey. Pat is now working at her favorite job—Head Bunny in Larry's Playboy Club. JOHNIE MOORE The Homecoming parade provided the Junior class with the first big thrill of the year. We enjoyed being in charge of the parade and were happy to receive first place for our float We'll Stamp Out De-Feet. Choosing our class rings, attending our class party on December 20, selling magazines, sponsoring a car wash and a sock hop, and selling coke at basketball games, along with planning the banquet and prom kept us busy and interested. Junior boys who participated in sports this year were: Rob Bower, Ed Dale, Jim Kent, Jim Moore, Johnie Moore, Bob Scott, John Stahl, Jack Stengel, Don Turnbull, and Dan Witts. Cheryl Kaylor and Sandy Blakeman were Cheerleaders, and Nancy Ketcham, Penny Howard, and Judy Sattley were Majorettes. We sold Homecoming Dance tickets and won the Lions Club plaque with our float We're Mixing Up a Victory. We had a Christmas party on December 21 and a Pizza Party on May 23. Our big project was the vest sale. We sold red and black reversible corduroy vests for both boys and girls. The cost was $3.00 per vest. We had only one other project, a bake sale, which was held on April 18. Cheerleaders from our class were: Debbie Sanner and Rita Kapper on the Varsity Squad, and Linda Etherton and Becky Baxter on the Junior Varsity Squad. Boys participating in sports from our class were: Steve Ross, Scott York, Rick Hemp, Louis Borkhardt, Keith Johnston, Dave Keleher, Larry Wicker, Harold Grossman, Fred Horne, Buddy Waugh, Delmar Bullock, and Larry Peters. The Seniors seemed to have a great time doing this. Our class sponsored the Homecoming bonfire in October. The theme of our float was They're Not Kennedys, so They're Beatable. The boys who took part in sports from our class were: Mike Kaylor, Ed Stengel, Carl Fieldbinder, Bob Kapper, Jim Cheshier, Gayland Thomas, Carl Febus, Marvin Lake, Lee Peyton, Carl Hancock, John Wright, and Steve Ketcham. Keith Barfield and Mark Rautbort were managers. Marsha Sanner and Susan Ford were Junior Varsity Cheerleaders. One of the enjoyable events of the year was a Hootenanny which was held in April. Timmons The past year has been very fruitful in some aspects for the Student Council. The mem- bers took an active concern in it and worked hard on all of their assigned jobs; but due to lack of student body co-operation, the council was unable to work at top efficiency. The first major event under the direction of the Student Council was Homecoming. The band for the Homecoming dance was entertaining, the crown bearers did an unusually fine job, the floats were judged fairly, and the dance was very well conducted. The council members tried to evoke some type of noontime activity. Although the members worked hard at planning a volleyball tournament, the student body did little to co-operate. The members worked very hard during the Christmas season. An enjoyable program for the high school was presented. All members did their share in cleaning up the gym and decorating the Christmas tree. The committee for refreshments was so generous that a large amount of cake was left. The main money-making project was the ticket sales for Homecoming. The Homecoming ticket sales increased the treasury to $250. After the council's expenses for Homecoming and the Christmas program were paid only $47.38 remained in the treasury. Librarians J. Mifflin, R. Fyke, B. Brown, M. Dodson, L. Febus, C. Ramsey, S. Blackwell, J. Rautbort, P. Hancock, Mrs. Howard This past year Mrs. Howard, with the help of nine librarians, has been building and organizing our library to be more suitable to our needs. We have added two hundred and fifty new books which have been catalogued and shelved. Early in the year our library got new identification shelf cards. Some of the various jobs of the librarians are to help students find books they want, put used books up, put new cards in books which need them, and keep the library in order. Townsfolk and students gathered around the bright fire to join in the cheers led by the spirited cheerleaders. After the cheers, Coach Isett gave a short speech and introduced Assistant Coach Weber and the players. The captains, Joe Miller and Don Dale, tossed the Bethany effigy into the fire. Then the traditional snake dance was led around the football field. The homecoming parade began Friday afternoon at 3:00 P.M. Between rain showers several floats were shown. The Illiopolis Pirate s football team played host to the Bethany Mustangs in the game on Friday night. During the half-time performance, the Varsity cheerleaders did a pompon routine; and Pat Gordy, majorette, twirled a fire baton. The homecoming festivities were climaxed Saturday night with the Homecoming Dance, “Magic Moments, with music furnished by The Limelighters. There was excitement in the air when the retiring King, Ralph Grossman, and Barbara Ward, who represented Sharyn Kent, the retiring Queen, crowned Don Dale and Judy Wright Homecoming King and Queen for 1963-64.
