1 r t PUBLISHED BY THE YEARBOOK STAFF OF ILLIOPOLIS HIGH SCHOOL pMrattan We dedicate this yearbook to our parents, who have faithfully stood by us in our times of sorrow and happiness, failure and success. Thanks to our parents, we have had many opportunities that would not have been possible if it were not for them. They have given us educational opportunities, spiritual help and guidance, as well as furnished our material needs. From the moment of our first breath, our parents have protected us, cared for us, and given us good advice even if we did not think so at the time. Who got us off to school on time; who made sure we were clean behind the ears; who made a living for us; and who comprised the audience at all our school functions? Our parents. As a small thank you to our parents, we dedicate this yearbook. SPECIAL THANKS Very special thanks go to Miss Sommer from the members of the Yearbook Staff. We greatly appreciated all your help, and could not have edited this Yearbook without you. We also want to thank the school secretaries for their help in keeping the school running smoothly. CLASS HISTORY 'Twas in August of 59 When 26 Freshmen began to shine; We were really ready to go. Yet wondered exactly how to do so. We came out a bit scraped from Initiation's Stunts, then were officially ready to man our stations. To start us safely on our long journey, we Chose: Darlene Bandy, President, she; Sam Smith, our Vice President to be; Karen Johnston, Secretary; Diana Barnes, Treasurer you see; Sharyn Kent, to Student Council, she. To represent our class on the sports score We had Ralph Clippinger and Larry Moore; On the cheerleading scene Sharyn Kent, Barb Ward, and Judy Cook were seen; Our Homecoming float, Soda Pirates Win , Disappointed us, (it DIDN'T win), for we had been Working hard on it, to make it look like a real Scrumptious, refreshing vanilla and straw- berry deal. Topped with a luscious, plump red cherry, to be the crown of any meal. Our Carnival booth was Football Pros , All prospective players to expose. Miss Osterhuber was our sponsor, And our great thanks we give to her. In August of '60 Only 19 in our class found we. To guide us this year, elected we: Sam Smith, President this time to be; Sharyn Kent, our Secretary; Roger Wicker, Treasurer, he. Representing us in sports once more Were Ralph Clippinger and Larry Moore; And again from our class were seen Barb Ward and Judy Cook upon the cheerleading scene; Our Homecoming float, Bottle 'Em Up , Again didn't bring us any victory cup. Kangaroo Court was our Carnival booth. In which we had locked up various criminals , forsooth! Our big money-making project was selling cans of candy. Which turned out to be quite dandy. Mr. Luallen was our sponsor this year. And our thanks we hope he does hear. In August of '61 Our class numbered 17, more not one. This year, as upperclassmen, we chose The following to lead us to the close Of our year: President Sharyn Kent; Larry Moore as Vice President; Butch Grossman, our Secretary gent; And Barb Ward, as Treasurer went. Representing us in sports once more Were Ralph Clippinger, Sam Smith, and Larry Moore. Upon the cheerleading scene This time only Barb Ward was seen; Put 'Em In Orbit was our Homecoming float. But no honors it brought, for we had not the vote. Homecoming Parade Marshall was Judy Cook; And everyone upon her job did look. Sharyn Kent was on Homecoming Court; A bake sale, car wash, and sock hop were money-making projects of a sort. Though our main one was magazine sales. Larry Moore was elected Carnival King, And reigned over it as a true king. In the Jr.-Sr. Play, Grandma, How Could You? , Diana Barnes, Donna Seay, Sharyn Kent, Karen Johnston, Judy Cook fine did do. Planning the Jr.-Sr. Prom occupied most of our time--May came much too soon! In the Sunbrella Room at Hotel Leiand in Springfield we held our prom, with the theme of How High the Moon? Sharyn Kent attended Girls' State; Butch Grossman attended Boys' State. Mrs. Shulke and Miss Sommer were our spon- sors. In August of '62 We entered with 15 in our class, who, Beginning our last year, chose: Butch Grossman, President, he; Sharyn Kent, Vice President, she; Judy Cook, Secretary to be; Darlene Bandy, Treasurer, she; Larry Moore and Barb Ward, both to be On the Student Council. In sports once more We see Ralph Clippinger and Larry Moore; Likewise upon the cheerleading scene Barb Ward may again be seen; Our Homecoming float was Pirates Are G-r-r-eatl We won no prize, though we thought our float did look g-r-r-eat! On Homecoming Court could be seen: Diana Barnes, Karen Johnston, Barb Ward, Sherry Cockrum, and Sharyn Kent, who reigned Queen; Also: Sam Smith, Larry Moore, Terry Pickett, Ralph Clippinger, and Butch Grossman, who reigned King. Betty Crocker winner was Sharyn Kent; And the DAR Good Citizenship Award to Judy Cook went. Karen Johnston was our Valedictorian, Sharyn Kent our Salutatorian. Mr. Me Ghee was our sponsor this year; Our great thanks we hope he does hear. On our class trip, we did go To the Wagon Wheel Lodge, to row, Skate, bowl, and swim. And cover the grounds from rim to rim. THIS PAGE SPONSORED BY: ILLIOPOLIS INSURANCE AGENCY r.e. McDermott--E.L. crane CLASS PROPHECY As we tour the world in the year 1983, we see people from the 1963 graduating class. First, we see Diana Barnes in her old 57 Chevie. She is still in the egg-selling business; in fact, she owns the largest egg plant in the United States--the Diana Egg Plant. She sold eggs to people in Illiopolis for 35 cents a dozen while she was in school. She still has many friends, but she would rather talk to the eggs, because they can't argue or fight back!!! Now we see Sharon Mueller, a world-famous model, who lives in a suburb of Illiopolis, Lanesville. When she was a senior at Illiopolis, she was a 299-pound weakling. She could outfight any boy and pick up more weights than anyone. After high school, she went to a weight-reducing school in the small neighboring town of Decatur and lost 176 pounds. Now all the boys flock around her, and she wonders why she ever lost so much weight! Today as we drop in on Karen Johnston, we see her in her Dior evening gown, practicing her GOLD clarinet for the concert at Carnegie Hall; but Karen hasn't been the same since she squeaked during a concert given at Illiopolis High. Karen is also a part-time teacher at Millikin University in Decatur. Aha! Here we see Sam Smith still driving around in his battered-up green truck. Sam is doing quite well running his own dairy farm. He was elected Best Farmer of the Year this year. Good work, Sam. Well, well, here is Butch Grossman. He is now Secretary of the Department of Agri- culture. He is going to present a demonstration to the Illiopolis Ag. Class on his in- vention of the wheel-less tractor. He now lives in Springfield with his wife, Sharon, and two lovely children. Now we go to New York to talk to Miss Sharon Long. Sharon is the hair stylist who invented all the new hair styles and tints. She uses her boyfriend for a guinea pig. He, at the latest count, has seven streaks of different color in his hair. Sharon fixes Liz Taylor's hair and charges such prices as $50 for a haircut, shampoo and set. Now, Sharon, who fixes YOUR hair? And here is Darlene Bandy, our first lady astronaut. We asked her how the trip was to the moon. She replied, It was out of this world! After her trip to the moon, she married a Decatur resident and had six children. And to think that she did not want a large family!! Well, well, what do you know! Larry Moore is still out at DeKalb in Illiopolis. He is still in Club 27, giving orders to Lightning Mitchell that he wants to cut down on feed consumption. Larry has in his mouth his ever-pleasant Rum River cigar, for which he has cornered the market. Well, wha' da ya know!!! Ralph Clippinger finally made it on the International Bas- ketball Team, because he invented the square basketball. When Ralph was in school, he was only five feet, eight inches, but now he has reached his full height of seven feet, three inches. Even though he grew so tall, he still married a short blonde from Illiop- oli8, Sherry Cockrum. Sherry and Ralph live in Washington, D.C., where Sherry is a hair stylist. Sherry is having trouble getting the dye off her hands. She's used it so many times that her hands have every color, including a green thumb. She and her shop are famous for styling Car- oline Kennedy's hair. Well, wha' da ya know about this, Sharyn Kent is out on the farm slopping the hogs. You wouldn't recognize her now; she's got her weight up to 230 pounds. How times do change. She is now president of the Poor Farmers' Association and Best All-around Hog Caller of the year. Well, next we see Terry Pickett as a fat man in a circus. He's in the big time now; he's got his own milk truck. He is just as clumsy as ever, though--------he falls off at every corner. His girlfriend, Becky, is getting tired of riding in that old milk truck. She says those rattling bottles take her mind off her business. But Terry still has a lot of faith in his truck, and even takes it for a spin around the race track. It's really exciting to see him pull those curves at 20 miles an hour. Now we see Butch Ward in her lush apartment in New York. She is trying to teach her pet tiger, Tye , how to walk on his hands to the record of Tiger Twist. Oh, we musn't forget: she is married and the proud mother of six children. Now we see Judy Cook, the speed demon typist of Illiopolis, as private secretary to the President of the United States. Judy has been busy babysitting with the President's children several nights a week, also. There is strong belief that Judy will be nominated for President on the next Republican ticket. Now we go to Paris, where we see Donna Seay. Donna has really gone far in her career as a dress designer. She has designed such dresses as the Disposable Dress , made from newspaper. Donna's career first began at Illiopolis High School. Keep on designing those originals, Donna!!! HONOR STUDENTS VALEDICTORIAN KMEN JOHNSTON D. A. Our purpose was to raise money to sponsor the Junior-Senior Prom of 1963. Nextj we were in charge of the Homecomiing Parade. Our float theme was Hot Dog, We're the Wiener. Other activities which we had were a bake sale, car wash, sock hop, and a booth at the Community Halloween Party. Making plans for the prom was our major project. The theme was Wonderland By Night , which was held at the Elks Club in Springfield, on May 4, 1963. Judy Wright and Paige Baxter were our Varsity Cheerleaders. The Junior boys who participated in the athletics this year were Don Dale, Joe Miller, Jim Whitehead, Jim Timmons, and Harold Roberts. Our class spent the rest of the year thinking of ingenious ways of making money. Some of the successful projects were: sponsoring two sock hops, selling bracelets, and selling Christmas cards. We are planning on starting next year with more than $100 in the treasury. The sports-minded boys in our class this year are: Bob Scott, Dan Witts, Ed Dale, Jack Stengel, Robbie Bower, and Jim Moore. The cheer- leaders from our class are Mitzi Elliott, Cheryl Kaylor, Sandy Blakeman, and Sylvia Miller. The majorettes who are sophomores are Judy Sattley, Penny Howard, and Nancy Ketcham. To start the year off the Seniors gave us a rough time with the Initiation and their special little verse each of us had to memorize. In October our class sponsored the Homecoming bonfire. The theme of our float was Argyle's 11 Win, Darned if We Don't. In December of '62, we had a Christmas Party with the exchange of gifts. The Freshmen boys who participated in football, basketball, baseball or track were: Richard Castleman, Harold Grossman, Richard Hemp, Fred Horne, Richard Koonce, Larry Peters, Steve Ross, Denzil Scales, Scott York, Larry Wicker, Delmar Bullock, Keith Johnston, and Ed Dale. They were elected as follows: PRESIDENT - Paige Baxter VICE-PRESIDENT - Larry Moore SECRETARY - Barbara Ward TREASURER - Martha Stahl This year's Student Council membership was increased due to the fact that members were not only elected from the classes but also from each organization. For noontime recreation during the winter months, it was decided to have dancing every- day in study hall (desks pushed back). For this purpose we started purchasing records each week with the money in our treasury. Homecoming Week was a hectic week for all. The whole ordeal was in the hands of the Student Council. The Student Council itself was in charge of court nominations, voting for king and queen, getting the band for the dance, and getting the float judges for the parade. The following assignments were made to the different classes: Freshmen, take care of bonfire (Thursday night) and decorate goalposts for Friday night's game; Sophomores, ticket sales for the dance; Juniors, organization of parade; Seniors, decoration of gym for the dance. It was decided to have the bonfire behind the school by the baseball diamond. We completely changed our annual Christmas program. This year's theme was White Christmas. Instead of exchanging gifts, each person brought some type of food wrapped in white paper. A Christmas story was read; Reverend Carnahan gave a talk on Christmas; the gifts, which were later distributed to needy families, were placed under the tree; refreshments were served. The whole program was done by candlelight. The last thing we decided on was a set type of letter for each sport or extra curricular activity that one could receive a letter for at the end of the year. Now that this year has ended, preparations for the voting of next year's Student Council President are being made. LIBRARIANS Left to right: J. Sattley, M. Clippinger, S. Long, B. Crayne, S. These students, working during their study halls, did the work necessary in the operation of a school library. Some of their duties were to check in books, collect fines, keep the magazine files in shape, process new books, and assist in book selections. Through their help, you were given good library service. Our meat-judging team placed second in the district. We also attended several other judging contests this year. We had a successful car wash in April to help finance our annual Parent-Son Banquet. With the help of our sponsor, Mr. Garrard, we had a happy and successful year. OFFGUARD! Fill 'er up!! Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum!? Scratch two fingers!! This where the glue goes'??? The next Friday Illiopolis took on their rival, Niantic. The game was scoreless for three quarters until Niantic scored and went on to win, 13-0. Assumption then came to Illiopolis and defeated the Pirates 51-6. Illiopolis then traveled to Maroa. Although the Pirates lost this game 26-7, they did make a better showing than they made the week before. The Meridian Conference champs, Lovington, were the next team to beat the Pirates 38-7. The Pirates made a good showing, however. The Pirates then lost to Bethany 32-6 due to the many costly errors that were made during the game. Illiopolis next took on Moweaqua. They played a fine game on their homecoming, but they lost 32-0. In the last game of the season Illiopolis scored 26 points, but they were unable to stop Argenta and were beaten by eight points.
