SENIOR CLASS HISTORY On August 31, 1953, twenty-six freshmen started the first of their four years of study and activity in Illiopolis High School. Over the passage of the four years our class number decreased, and on May 24, 1957, our graduating class was twenty in number. We've had good times and bad times, laugh times and cry times; but, in the final analysis, no amount of money could take away the spirit of the four years from us. As awed Freshmen, we had a few of our boys participate in sports and Debby McCaleb was selected as a cheerleader. Our Freshman class officers were: President, Carol Winters; Treasurer, Ed Ramsey; Student Council Rep- resentative, Debby McCaleb. Sophomoric and happy, our second year went rapidly. More of our class were entering into sports, Debby was again selected a cheerleader, and our class officers were: President, John Roberts; Vice-President, Marcia Seaton; Secretary, Barbara Miller; Treasurer, Jim Dunn; Student Council Representative, Carol Winters. Our Junior year we felt like we had arrived. Doug Myers smashed all records for magazine sales; our third finger left had was weighted with a bright, shiny class ring; we organized the Homecoming parade; sponsored a Christmastime Mistletoe Dance; lent our dramatic talents to OUR HEARTS WERE YOUNG AND GAY; Debby was cheerleader again; athletic honors went to Ed Ramsey,.John Roberts, Gary Lamb, Gary Hancock and Jim Dunn; and topped off the year sponsoring a gala Old New Mexico dinner- dance, the Junior-Senior Prom at the Elks Club in Springfield. Our class officers for the year were: President, Ed Ramsey; Vice-President, John Roberts; Secretary, Debby McCaleb; Treasurer, Marcia Seaton; Student Coun - cil Representative, Barbara Miller. Music honors came our way, while Ed Ramsey and Barbara Miller represented us respectively at Boy's State and Girl's State. Cap and Gown year arrived. Under class officers Ed Ramsey, Presi- dent; Loretta Rohrig, Vice-President; Carol Winters, Secretary; Barbara Miller, Treasurer; and Jo|in Roberts, Student Council Representative, we rolled along to collect more laurels. Project for the year was the 1956-57 annual; staging the Homecoming Festivities; concession sales; getting into the grease-paint for BEAUTY AND THE BEEF; applauding our senior five as they pulled in the athletic letters; sponsoring a series of Saturday night dances; lauding Carol and Marcia as valedictorian and salutatorian; seeing Barbara Miller represent us a queen candidate for the Midwest Horse Show; and watching Barbara Miller and Ed Ramsey being crowned Homecoming Queen and King; Carol being selected as DAR award winner; and thoroughly enjoying being guests of the Juniors at the Junior-Senior Prom in the Elks Club in Springfield. Our four years in Illiopolis High School have been productive ones. We have participated as leaders and as followers. We look back on each year with fondness and with no regrets. We have learned much, bbth in the classroom and in our many school activities. Though our motto has been On life's vast ocean, diversely we sail, we go our separate paths armed with the knowledge and self-assurance we have developed in high school. SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY On this bright July morning in 1982, the 1957 graduates are having their first class reunion since graduation. John Roberts is host to his classmates. He owns the largest dairy farm in the state of Illinois. Naturally, it is in the big city of Illiopolis. The first to arrive is Carol Winters. She is now a professional musician. Although we have all seen her on T.V., it is good to see her in person again. Screech! Who could that be? I should have guessed—Gary Hancock. Gary has taken over the hatchery business and must be prospering from the looks of that 1982 Cadillac convertible. Jimmie Long is now arriving. Jimmie has been in Colorado the past few years writing books. She has had many big sellers. Welli Who is this now arriving? Barbara Miller, of course. Barb started to college after graduation, but didn't finish because a talent scout saw her and took her to the movie world. She made movies for a few years then settled down in Hollywood to married life as the wife of a movie producer. The next to arrive are Marilyn Coekrum and Barbara Owens. Barbara is head telephone operator in Springfield and Marilyn is a beautician in Illiopolis. Doug Myers is now arriving. He is married and has four children. Doug is a big boss out at Borden's. Here comes Gary Lamb. Gary joined the Marines after graduation and made a career of it. Twenty-five years is a long time—but we're glad he likes it. Loretta Rhorig steps out of her car. Loretta is a Spanish teacher at Decatur High. Of course, we all know that she is a good one. Next to arrive is T.V.'s Master of Ceremony, Ed Ramsey. Ed took over Hal's job on the $64,000 Question soon after graduation. Marcia Seaton arrives looking for some of her classmates. Marcia was a model for a few years after graduation, but gave up her career for married life. Bob Lucas and Bill Sargent are pulling in the drive. After grad- uation they bought the comer in Illiopolis and rebuilt the drug store. Looking around, we see that Nina and Rosalie have arrived. Nina is married and lives in New York. Her husband is a Navy career man. Rosalie is the star in a New York Ballet. We see Harry Wilson running from room to room getting all the gos- sip that is flying around. What a paper he'll have next week—in case you didn't know, Harry is publisher of the Illiopolis Sentinal. Dorris Dodson is talking to a group of her classmates. Dorris is married and lives out West on a big cattle ranch. Over in the corner we see Jim Dunn telling about an experiment he is making in the scientific field. Jim is a scientist working for the government. Last, but not least, is Sue Rogers. Sue showed her secretarial ability after graduation by being hired as a personal secretary to John D. Rockefeller. Soon the day flies by and everyone is gone. As each guest left, they all were glad to have been there,-a part of the 1957 class. SENIOR CLASS POEM he :Jfi7agf adilating class of Illiopo- Quiet and Friendly is a boy named Bob, lis High, We have had a good time as the years went by. We all agree that we’re real great. But some one may say that we'll meet our fate. We've had a good class of which we're proud. So here's a few things about them to be read out loud: Whenever you're in Decatur, You're sure to see Rosie sooner or later. She is a rather short gal with light blu blue eyes. Who really likes those Decatur ;y guys. In our class is a boy named Jim, Who is really tall from head to limb. To the state of Kansas he often goes. But what he does—nobody knows.' Jimmie is the small one of our class. With everyone she is sure to pass. On the farm she really does work. And from her duties never will shirk. One of our boys is going to Rolla, His record of good grades he is sure to follow. John is his name and he's really sweet. At school lots of friends he is sure to meet. Dorris is the shy and quiet type. Whatever she does is sure to be right. All of us are sure to agree. That Dorris is very nice and friendly. Gary Lamb is the slow moving kind. Whatever he does takes him time. In the classroom he is usually quiet. But once he gets started---- he's really a riot. Sue is a small but mighty girl. And really gives all the boys a whirl. She's lots of fun and really sweet. To meet her is really a treat. One of our guys goes with a Decatur gal. This boy we all know well. Gary Hancock is his name. And maybe someday he will gain great fame. Marcia's a tall blond with bright blue eyes. And this year we have often heard her sighs. As Salutatorian she was this year hon- ored. And on many ideas she often pondered On a farm this guy has a job. He is often teased about being rich. But with all the kids he does mix. We also have a girl who's tall and dark. In sbhool she has very good marks. Loretta is her name and she's lots of fun. And seems to always be on the run. Either in a Ford or a Buick this guy is seen But in neither one is he ever mean. The name of this boy is Bill, And whenever asked a favor—do it he will ]: Carol is a girl we all know well. In music she really does excell. As Valedictorian of our class. She is a very nice and intelligent lass. Another student is named Harry, Someday we are sure he will marry. But he is not the type to be lazy. Or ever seen acting crazy. Next is a girl who has naturally curly hair. For fast dancing she has a flair. Marilyn can work but when it is done. She is always out to have lots of fun. As Hbmecoming Queen was Barbara Miller, You will all agree she's quite a thriller. V ith those big blue eyes she's really some gal. And we have all found her to be our pal. There seems to be a joker in every class, Doug is ours from first to last. In his black Mercury he is often seen. And on a girl named Carolyn he is really keen. In our class we have another blond. For dancing she is rather fond. As you probably know, Nina is her name. And wherever you see her she's always the same. Barbara Owens is last on our list. Sometimes she acts as though in a mist. We agree that she will soon go to a parson. With a guy who is from Dawson. As we leave we would like to say, V e'll wish we were back again some- day. We hate to leave all the familiar faces. But in life's vast ocean we must take our places. Help- ing to spur the team to victory are cheerleaders, Ruth Anne Hohenstein and Carolyn Bandy. Sharolyn Elliott and Deraid Hartley were top sales people in the annual magazine sales drive sponsored by the Juniors. Millie Maxheimer and Ed Wilson served as team captains to accomplish the record drive. The Homecoming of 1956 saw the Junior Class conducting the Homecoming Parade under the able direction of Bob Handlin and Ed Wilson. From an idea presented by Carter Kitson, Illiopolis Expects the class spent many happy hours working on the float at Ruth Anne Hohensteins. To the band we have given Carolyn Bandy, Sharolyn Elliott, Ronald Leckrone, Nancy Pritchett, Jessie Beck, Patty Hall and Deraid Hartley. In December they had their Christmas Party and in January, their Formal Ini- tiation for the Freshmen. The highlight in February was the Faculty Board Dinner, and in March the girls went to a for- eign restaurant and ate foreign food, which proved to be lots of fun. It was the first time this had been done. The Style Show, Clothing Crusade, Assembly Program during F. H. A. Week, and the Formal Installation of Officers were also important events of the year. THE LIBRARY Did you ever work in a library? Most of the work in the high school library is done by student librarians. Each year both the library and the librarians' duties expand. The duties of a student librarian are handling the circu- lation of the books, keeping the library neat and clean, pro- cessing the new books, repairing the worn volumes, and decor- ating the bulletin boards. Since the librarians had not toured a large library, we took a trip this year to the Springfield Library. Everyone enjoyed the trip and learned how a large library is operated. Thie year new magazine folders have been installed to keep the magazines in their proper places. It is our wish that the Illiopolis High School Library will keep growing both in size and service. Also this year we had a Christmas Bakery Sale and a Green Door Dance at which time a queen and king were crowned. The King was David Drabing and the Queen was Ruth Anne Hohenstein, who were crowned for their most original idea of what they thought would be behind the Green Door. In- stead of having the dance after the victorious game with Assumption, the dance was held the next night which was Saturday, September 28, 1956. Therefore, the coronation of the king and queen was held that evening. Soft lights and crepe paper streamers transformed the gymnasium into a ballroom for the dance fol- lowing the coronation. As the Vic Alane orchestra softly played A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody , the court was ready to come in the gym doors. The first to enter were Sue Rogers and John Roberts, then Marcia Seaton and Doug Myers; Loretta Rchrig and Gary Lamb; Carol Winters ana Jim Dunn. The court for this year were fol- lowed by last year's king and queen who were Shirley Williams and Gene Dial. Next were the two very cute crownbearers who were Ellen Wurl and Bill Peters. Then the excit- ing moment came—the king and queen walked to the throne to be crowned. They were Barbara Miller and Ed Ramsey, who after being crowned, lead the first dance after the coronation and were followed by the rest of the court.
