A professor who inspires us to discover the excitement of being and learning to live. One with whom we share our deepest thoughts and desires because he respects us. He explored the human mind to teach others the meaning of the existence of man . . . and the wisdom of the mind. Because of his efforts many have left Wesleyan with vital insight into life and a better understanding of himself. Wesleyan's Brokaw Collegiate School of Nursing today provides the only accredited degree program in nursing between Chicago and St. Louis. The biggest break through came in 1956 when a program leading to a bachelor of science degree in nursing was established, under the ioint control of the IWU Board of Trustees and the Brokaw Hospital Board of Directors. ln the autumn of 1958. the hospital school admitted its last class and the University trustees voted to establish the Brokaw Collegiate School of Nursing of lllinois Wesleyan University. inviting all Brokaw alumnae to join the Wesleyan alumni rolls. The new phase was led by another remarkable woman. Dr. lVlary D. Shanks. Dr. Shanks holds a Brokaw Diploma and she is a graduate from Wesleyan. Before coming to Wesleyan to head the School of Nursing. Dr. Shanks served as Chairman of the Masters Program in Nursing Education at the University of Pennsylvania, and as Nursing Service Administrator at Garfield Hospital. Washington.
