She was a devoted and understanding friend of Illinois Wesleyan University. ln Memoriam FRANKLIN SPENCER MORTIMER, Ph.D. Professor of Chemistry, 1921-1945 Chairman of the Division of Natural Sciences A teacher beloved by all, under whose magnetic guidance students eagerly sought to know the mysteries of the natural world. To him, the heavens declared the glory of God. His sudden death left a vacant place against the sky. MYRON THOMAS TOWNSEND, Ph.D. Professor of Biology, 1930-1944 A thorough scientist, an inspiring teacher, a faithful worker through whose untiring efforts the Health Pro- gram on the campus of Illinois Wes- leyan was developed, thus protecting the lives of students and faculty. -X -nqf. In Memoriam CLIFF GUILD, M.S. 1905-1945 A devoted colleague who gave 'forty years of faithful service to Illinois Wesleyan University. As professor of mathematics, registrar, burscir, secre- tary of the Joint Board of Trustees and OHicial Visitors, manager ofthe book- store, he was untiring in his devotion to the tasks assigned him. A genial friend, loyal to his schools, his church, his community, he exemplified the highest ideals of Christian manhood. GERTRUDE ANN BOHRER, B.A. Instructor in Secretarial Science, 1941-1944 During her years of service she brought to her task a radiant person- ality, a deep personal interest in those who studied under her and a broad understanding of the contribution which a college should make to con- temporary life. ww w' 3 eff? She maketh me to explain the binomial theorem, and exposeth my ignorance before the whole class. She restoreth my sorrow, she causeth me to work logarithms for my grade's sake. Yea, though I burn the midnight oil, I shall gain no knowledge, for determinants sorely trouble me, permutations and combinations they distress me. Thou preparest a test for me in the presence of sophomores, my memory runneth over. Surely brain trouble shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall be plagued with daffiiness forever. -A Freshman. So your son's in college? Burning midnight oil, I suppose? Well, yes, but l've an idea that it's gaso- me. Bob L., said Dr. Wantland in Anatomy class, ls there any connecting link between the animal and vegetable kingdoms? Yes, said Bob, Hash. Mary-Jack would dance perfectly if it were not for two things. Helen- ls that so? What are they? Mary- His feet. I stole a kiss the other night, My conscience hurts me so, Alack! I think l'll go tomorrow And put the darned thing back. Lou O.- What will you teach when you graduate? Jeanne F.- I don't know. You see, I haven't decided what degree to take, l'm still wavering between an M.A. and an M.A.N. Dr. Hazzard- Perry S., what is Confucian- ism? Perry- Why, it is the belief in confusion. A suggested epitaph: Shed a few tears for Sylvester Q. Blee Who walked into the Sig house singing the Sweetheart of TKE. The prize optimist is the gent who lights a match before he asks a fraternity brother for a cigarette. Of all sad words, The whole class votes There's none so sad as Close your notes. 123 Faith-The young man who sends flowers to a girl who has broken a date on account of illness. Hope-The man who calls a girl for a date at 8:00 P.M. Saturday evening. Charity-The girl who suggests they go to the movies. lf she goes with all the boys she's a coquette. If she prefers a steady she couldn't get any- one else. lf she majors in Chemistry or Greek, she's queer. If she doesn't she is looking for snap courses. If she is athletic she loses her maidenly charms. If she is not, well, girls cannot do much anyhow. lf she doesn't wear a diamond she's not en- gaged. If she does she's running a bluff. lf she belongs to a sorority she's frivolous. If she doesn't she couldn't get in. If she asserts herself in class, she's strong- headed. lf she does not she hasn't any brains. If she doesn't talk much she's uninteresting. lf she does, she's tiresome. Now, what is she going to do? Dr. Schultz-inquiring about a lesson in Dante- Where in hell are we? 124 Chuck R.- Say, what is a faculty? Dizz J.- A body of members hired to help the Seniors run the college. May l print a kiss? he said She nodded her kind permission, So they want to press and I rather guess They printed a full edition.
