Don Heap, backheld coach, john Kovatch, line coach, and Don Drumm, freshman coach were directing football at the first of the year. Kovatch came to Wesleyan this year from Northwestern to replace Bob Voights. Soon after the foot- ball season closed, Don Heap was called to the U. S. army. Don Drumm was then promoted to basketball coach, while Kovatch was appointed head coach. Fred Muhl con- tinues as athletic director and track coach. Mr. Muhl has been at Wesleyan for thirty- one years. Bill Craig was chosen as assistant coach in the early spring. E 5-- 'r i . 1 fiat X -4--.k X fi 'if 3 cc? The team started the year with a few reverses, namely Marshall College and Youngstown. However, these games were lost to powerful adversaries, and the Wesleyail eleven had not yet hit its stride. As the season passed the squad showed ever increas- ing possibilities. They held the University of Toledo to a 9-O score, and a following Saturday held the Brad- ley charge on a wet, muddy field to a 6-0 score. The Kovatch-Heap combination was girding itself for the major game of the season . . . the game between Bloom- ington-Normal's traditional rivals, Wesleyan and Nor- mal. The Normal squad was held to be good, and considered by the Normal fans to have an easy victory over Wesleyaim. But the Titans had no thought of defeat. With Al- kire's ball-carrying, Wetterlund's booting and passing, and the steady work of Lyle Lanz in the line, the Titans were able to hold the Normal squad scoreless. Harry Wilk, Captain-elect, did an A-1 job of blocking in the backfield and enabled Wetterluiud to come through with many long boots and passes. af' - wwf Q T 'TH W - f f ' ws . 6-, wiv' , 6 Ns . 4 L A N- f,,,Z , I' 3 7 ' Q. The team won four games and lost nineteen, being unable to include any confer- ence games in its win column. The squad was rather young and inexperienced, composed mostly of sophomores and juniors. There was only one senior on the team, Bill Burke, who in his last year played a fine brand of ball at guard. Captain Bob Crabtree, Clyde Buettner, and Bill Alkire made up the junior portion of the squad, while the more promising sophomores were Dick Read, Keith Dalyrymple, Grant Conning- ham, and Frank Brandel. Titan followers may pin their hopes on a much improved team next year. All but one of this year's varsity will be returning plus an above average crop of freshmen who will give added height and speed to the team. Ak, x '. Q .. ,I ,N mkr CAPT. Students and townspeople hurried home to hear the latest news reports, and hovered around radios in tense little groups. The next morning, all Wesleyan gathered in chapel to hear Presi- dent Roosevelt's formal declaration of war, later eating silent lunches as radios were turned to senatorial opinions and votes. Students responded, not only by entering en- thusiastically into Red Cross and defense stamp drives, but also by carrying on their Christmas season in the usual Wesleyan way, with groups of Greek-letter carolers, lighted Christmas trees in Hedding and Presser Halls, the presentation of the 1lfIe.u'if1b, and the traditional Episcopoi Christmas chapel service. Wesleyaim joined other colleges in wartime readjustment by in- stalling new courses, fnext pagej, building up health department, giving degrees to senior men called into service. il Sz X X 1 2 iq .. bv' X 4 ' vwfiil' .5 .
