The 1940 Titans came through against some of the best teams in the country with seven victories and one loss. Led by Captain Bob Morrow, who gained national honors and who has been labeled Wesleyan's greatest fullback, the Green and White again, forthe sec- ond consecutive year, won the Illinois College Con- ference Championship. Opening the season with a home victory, Wes- leyan scored 12 points against Carroll College. The following weekend, a conference rival, Illinois College was thrown for a 21 to O loss by the rampaging Titans. Their next foe was the powerful Akron Uni- versity. Wesleyan spoiled the Zippers homecoming by defeating them 16 to 6. The U. S. Naval Fliers furnished the opposition forthe Wesleyanites homecoming giving the Titans an easy 34 to 6 victory to celebrate. Louisiana Tech ecked out in the closing minutes a 20 to 14 victory over the Green and White, travelworn by their long bus ride. Wesleyan then iourneyed to Peoria to meet a highly touted Bradley Tech team. The Titans promptly rose to the occasion to swamp the ln- dians, 27 to 7. The high scoring Millikin team was not as easily turned back as the score 32 to 18 seems to indi- 1941 Skipper-Chet Wetterlund, one of the finest all-round backs in Titan history was elevated to the captaincy of the 1941 eleven. Sports writers claim he is the most accurate passer in the state. 71 gig' 'C We 'Q Q a V5 , vi-nes... as 5 . Win- ning this game gave Wesleyan a share ofthe con- ference championship, but as the other co-cham- pions, Lake Forrest, had only played two easy conference games it was conceded that lllinois Wesleyan was truly the conference champion. As each had won their conference champion- ship, the game with Normal was billed as the battle for the mythical state championship. In what looked like a practice tilt the Titans ran over and under the Redbirds to the tune of 32-6 to conclude the most brilliant season for Wesleyan in recent years. 73 wi xn- rr .. , Leflmll p 1 'et Vu.. . . Don Drumm under Voights' tutelage developed into an exceptional guard, improving as the season progressed, as did the entire squad. Altogether the coaches and their l94O-41 basketball season were very highly regarded at Wesleyan. Capt. Harry Anderson, veteran forward, honored by basketball captaincy for 1940-41 . Ed Quigley, selected by his team mates as second semester captain since Ander- son was in school only the tirst semester. -Q, l94O-All Basketball Season The Titan basketball team finished the season with a total of 8 games won against ll losses. Of the conference games Wesleyan won 4 and lost 4. During the Christmas vacation the squad met strong eastern teams gaining much experience, offsetting the fact that they did not have a single victory on that trip. At the close of the season ten letters were awarded. Some fine basketball material was found in this year's freshman team, giving added hope for next year. At Wesleyan Voights coached the football line, basketball, and baseball. Coach' Heap took over Voights' baseball duties. John Kovatch has been selected as the new coach for the football line and basketball team of next fall. Last year the baseball team won the con- ference championship, and from all present indications this year's team should make as fine a record. Through the eFforts of Heap and Voights, Wesleyan was awarded by the Illinois Col- lege Conference first place for the Best Com- posite Score, the highest ranking in the greatest number of sports compared with the records of all the other colleges in the con- ference. Wesleyan will eagerly follow Bob Voights' efforts at Yale with the hope of great success in the future for him. Conf. Fred laPIant. Second base BoseboH R. Fash H. Dickie D. GralT J. Hofmann J. From the time of his coming in 1924 until his sudden death this spring, he commanded and held the respect and admiration of all those who knew him, not only as a teacher and fine musician, but as a true friend and gentleman. He gave unstintingly of his time, effort, and material means to the students and interests of lllinois Wesleyan and continued as always to give unselfishly of himself even after retiring from his position as Head of the Violin Department in 1939 when he assumed the status of Composer in Residence. His was a life well-lived and devoted not to himself but to others. Wesleyan will not soon forget our beloved Pop Kritch. A Cappella Choir. . . Administrative Stal? . .. Alpha Epsilon Delta ....
