Mr. Bartkowiak was a member of the 1938 and 1939 football squads and last year's baseball team. He was to have been graduated this June. Following his graduation from Wright Junior college he entered Wesleyan in 1938. The aim of the group is to promote unity among the Greek organizations. This year Pan-Hellenic sponsored a Leap Year dance and with the lnterfraternity council gave a reception for President and Mrs. Shaw. It is sponsoring the May festival with the lnterfraternity council this year. lnterfraternity Council The lnterfraternity council at lllinois Wesleyan is composed of representatives of each of the national fraternities on the campus. It originates and enforces regulations for the mutual benefit of these groups. lt contributes to cooperation and better understanding among the fraternities, for which purpose it was founded in 1934. The group awards a scholarship trophy to the Liberal Arts fraternity maintaining the highest average for the semester. A 7 With the opening of the I939 football season, Wesleyan found two new faces in its ranks, Don Heap and Bob Voigts, who were to begin the task of building a football team. After a short practice the Titans opened their season with Louis- iana Poly, and suffered their first loss. The next foe was that powerful eastern team, Duquesne. It was here the Titans got their worst setback. Akron then came up for its share of the honors, they turned back the Wesleyan eleven by a very narrow margin. Fans and followers were given plenty of thrills as the Titans ran over the Flyers from Pensacola, and showed plenty of speed and power. A week of practice and the boys headed north for that long awaited battle with Michigan State. lt was here that Wesleyan met its most heart breaking loss. With only twenty-six seconds to go Michigan got a break and walked off the field with the victory. Millikin was all primed for a win but were easily turned back the next weekend. Before a stadium filled with enthusiastic fans the Titans put Normal back on its haunches. During the past season the people of Blomington had heard nothing but Bradley, the most over rated team in the mid-westp Turkey Day was an unlucky day for the Braves, Wesleyan made them look like a sand-lot team. Though defeated by a scrappy DeKalb team in the opening game, the double elimination feature of the tourney allowed Wesleyan tc proceed to the finals. Repeating for the third time a one point victory, Wesleyan toppled St. Josephs in the final game to win the tournament. Composed mainly of Freshmen and inexperienced material, several outstand- ing performers came out of the squad. Dominick Monge was the captain this year. Simpson, Shirk, Harris, Wernst, Block, Butler TENNIS With three lettermen remaining from last year's squad, the Wesleyan net team turned in a fine record, losing only to one school in dual competition. With only one letterman available, the squad was made up of men inexperienced in college competition. A fair record was turned in however and prospects look good for next year. A student is enrolled in the university as a regular student for two years, after which she enters the hospital to begin her training. While Tom in true mascu- line fashion is seen struggling with his tie at the last minute after being held up at the house over important business lthat's an old one.l HCDMEC DMING This year's Homecoming festivities went off smoothly with John Kerr as chairman. Phi Gamma Delta and Kappa Kappa Gamma won the house decorations while Phi Sigma Epsilon and Kappa Delta won in the float contest. Tau Kappa Epsilon and Kappa Kappa Gamma placed first in the Greek Sing and tied for the Keg. Phi Mu Alpha won the Sing from the Music School. Petty, nationally recognized artist and illustrator, from a group of fifteen of Illinois Wesleyan's most photographically beautiful coeds. Art Professor Vincent P. Quinn and Mr. Edward Bryan of the Pantagraph Printing and Stationery Company were the iudges who selected the fifteen most beautiful out of the whole school. All through this contest, no names, sorority affiliation, or personality entered into the iudging.
