With unusually heavy losses from graduation last year, Foaeh Bell began the difficult task of remolding both his backfield and line for this ycar's Wesleyan football eleven. Considering the fact that the Titans were seriously inconvenieneed by an inadequate practice field, due to the construction of the new stadium, coupled with the fact that this year's schedule was probably one of the toughest in the history of the school, the boys and their coach merit much praise for their work and play on the gridiron this season. The season began with Wesleyan being defeated in a hard fought game with the University of 'Cincinnati by a small score of 6 to 0. This game proved to Coach Bell that although his team was comparatively green as to experience, they had plenty of fight. The next game was played at East Lansing, Michigan with the powerful Michigan State, and again it was size and number that saw the Titans beaten by a score of 18 to 0. This game was much closer and more evenly played than the score would indicate. Illinois College was the homecoming opponents of Vtlesleyan, and it was a. typical Titan team that set the Blue Boys down to the tune of 13 to 0 before at large crowd of returning Alums. However it was the highly toted Bradley Braves that turned the trick on Wesleyan the following week and found the Titans coming home from Peoria, beaten by a score of 13 to 0. In their next game VVesleyan was again beaten by the University of Akron, 20 to 0. The next home game found the Titans downing the boys from Millikin, 21 to 6. Probably no more enthusiasm has ever been shown than was displayed at the Normal-VVesleyan games this year. ln the first game an inspired Normal eleven held NVesleyan down to a tie score of T to 7. However at the Thanks- giving Benefit game played at the new stadium, the Vllesleyan team sent the Normal boys back up Franklin Avenue smarting from the sting of a 2-l to 0 beating. The Titans showed more form in every way than they had shown all year. 116 , I ffifgl' ,qi , 'Lv A , AQ ,. M. B011 Fred Muhl COACHES HASKETH LL Anderson Monahan Drumm Soeka. Wiesleyan Authorities Select New Coaches, Head of Violin Department Announcement was made this morning of thc appointment of Prof. Stanislaus Wladek Brz, of Dublin, Ireland, as head of the violin department in the Wes- leyan School of Music. Having been kicked out of some of the finest schools in the country, Mr. Brz comes here with a very broad background. Mr. Brz has received from the Yeastman School such awards as, a. bachelor of no little conse- quence, three G strings, and a brand new set of china dishes. Past Record Mr. Brz has a iine record of playing experience preceding him here. He served for three years as first violinist for the Hoosier Hot Shots, a well-known Chicago ensemble. He has spent many happy hours sawing away with the Sauk City Philharmonic Orchestra for the past two years. At present, Mr. Brz is touring the South with 21 well-known medicine show. He hasn't had any other offers, so he has decided to take the post at Wesleyan in prefer- ence to starving to death. Prof. Brz writes that he will arrive in town next Saturday on the Abraham Lincoln. Says Prof. Brz, Dat Abe Lincoln train 's got de snazziest set of rods I ever rid. The faculty committee of Illi- nois NYcsleyan met last week and tendered contracts to two new members of the Wesleyan coach- ing staff. The new coaches are Orville Scruggs and Dabney Winter- hottom. These names are surely familiar to all you sports lovers and we at lNesleyan may con- sider ourselves fortunate indeed in securing the services of two such well-known athletes. Scruggs will be remembered as a unanimous All-American choice on everybody's badmin- ton team of last year, while XVinterbottom was a shuffle- board player of no mean ability. Scruggs received his degree from Slippery Rock Teachers College last June, while Winter- bottom was recently turned loose from Split Lip University. Prior to the time of their graduation, both attended many other col- leges, too numerous to mention. Frankly, this correspondent doesn't see how either of these tramp athletes graduated from any school, but now we 're stuck with them and I Suppose we'll have to make the most of it. How these guys are going to make anything out of that bunch of muscle-brains we call football players, continues to be a burning question in the minds of we more cultured students. The outcome was i11 doubt until the very last hour of the match between Capt. Lobb of lilcsleyan and Capt. Netts of the Franklin aggregation. This match was bitterly contested and it was only after a hard struggle that Capt. Lobb bowed his head in defeat. The scores of this match were, 21-1, 7 come ll, and 54-40 or fight. In the doubles, Lohb and Slobb of Viiesleyan defeated Bibb and Tucker of Franklin, but this match did not count in the final score because Lobb a.nd Slobb were disqnaliiied for using roller skates.
