When Peggy and Liz Madsen left the group, we got a new piano player, Caroline. Joy Bell also played for us at Reno. Paul Dillon also became part of our group to play the drums along with Wayne. Also seen in this picture on the left is Mr. Graves. The Swin Set performed all around the valley for various clubs and functions. They raised a lot of their money through a sing-a-thon, car washes and candy drives. Many thanks go to the parents, friends and supporters that have helped the group all year. 1976-1977 53 The most exciting thing the Swing Set wanted to do this year was to travel to Reno, Nevada. The whole group (chaperoned by Mr. Mrs. Graves) left Grants Pass aboard a Greyhound Bus. They saw many different groups perform, most of who were competing in the Jazz Festival. They gave a great performance Saturday morning, competing against 11 other single A schools. As it turned out, Swing Set placed 5th out of 12. They didn't make the finals, but they still had a great time in Reno. SWING SET ’77 above: one of our super soloists was Jill, singing part of, Let it be me. below: Morgan, Greg, Brian, and Eddie. Though there was disappointment over the loss of the game, it didn't affect the happiness of the Homecoming Court. After each princess was driven onto the field on a flashy car, they alighted and waited eagerly for the announcement of Queen (above left) Senior Captain Keith Steward presented Queen Shelley Smith with a bouquet of flowers as her court congratulated her (above right). Below, Queen Shelley and her court, Princess Sara Miller, Princess Candi Pinson (and her adidas), and Princess Robin Brummett. All of the class floats this year were good, but there is always one that shows superior craftsmanship. The Seniors (of course) revealed this by taking first place float in the Homecoming parade (above). After the parade, everyone headed for the Dairy Queen parking lot for class competition yells (below), which was won by the Juniors. 1977 STAIRWAY Princess Jodi and escort Bob. Prom Queen 1977 Pauline Pinios. TO HEAVEN The 1977 Junior-Senior Prom turned out very promising considering the amount of time they had to decorate. The Prom was held in our brand new Cafetorium for the first time put on by the Junior class of 1978. The highlight of the night was the crowning of the queen Pauline Pinios, and her court Tina Lewis, Glenna Hughes, Jodi Mayfield. Under the theme Stairway to Heaven and with music by Mandragora, Prom night, May 14, was a memorable night for all. Trailblazer Staff Top Pauline Pinios, Ann Vaught, Lauana Oliver, Middle: Advisor Mr. Lathan, Lori Farmer, Vicki Bassett, Debbie Berry, Donna Burk, Bottom: Kathy Honeycutt, Peggy Miller, Chris Fox, Tracy Stocking This year was the first year for the annual staff to have class time to work on the yearbook. Determined to make this annual better than any before, a mere 21 kids, kids who were never on a yearbook staff and an advisor who knew nothing set out in full force. We are very proud of the job that we have done on this book, at times we didn't know if it would ever be, but here it is. We hope you enjoy looking through this very much and will always treasure it. Not pictured: Brian Dobie, Penny Mitchell, and Dennis Bleser, Mr. Johnston was the teacher. This year's journalism class put out a very good newspaper every Friday. At the beginning of the year, Mr. Johnston wanted to make the paper up to date and and eventful. The first few papers were the hardest to do, and there were many times when they thought that they would not meet the deadline, but they always did, and they did a good job. The year was ended with a superb Senior Edition. Greg St. George is hot dogging. Activities... This year the teachers got together and made a list of activities and clubs they would like to sponsor. It took awhile to set up the clubs, then once they did, there wasn't enough time in school for the clubs to meet. When the move to the new school was made, we were granted a break period. Every Wednesday the classes were cut five minutes, which led to the activity period between second and third period. Above: The Frisbee Club r — Flirting, of course, is another activity. 73 Mr. Lathen presents award to Keith Steward. Mr. Goodman presents award to Ken Cochran for the most outstanding Cross Country runner. Mr. Horning presents award to Les Buell for the outstanding JV player. Mr. Johnston paused just a brief moment to talk a little bit on his volleyball team. The whole team was congratulated. 74 WINTER SPORTS BANQUET The winter sports' banquet was held May 10, 1977 to honor all the students who participated in sports. Ken Cochran, Most Valuable Runner. The boy's team had some strong individual talent, but did not show enough depth at the district meet. Ken Cochran and Mike Roberts were both ribbon winners at district. The girl's team had a very successful season topping it off with placing first at district and fourth at state. Nancy Reynolds, Lore Mayfield and Chris Fox were ribbon winners at district, Nancy also received a second place medal at state. Mr. Goodman expects good results from next year as most of their talent will be returning with the exception of senior Ivan Nelson. The Marathon was the thrill of the victory on homecoming night as Charles Weisse completed the 240th mile in the team's effort to break Rogue River's 222lA unofficial record mark for the 24-hour marathon. Ken Cochran started off with the baton at 7:30 the night before. Most of the runners did 880's and some did one-mile segments around the track. The Cross-Country team was really pleased with their effort because with ten less people than Rogue River had, IV broke the Chieftain's record by almost 18 miles. V A R S I T Y F 0 0 T B A L L I.V. Oh boy, did you see that, Coach? . . . Yea, now you guys settle down while I count heads . . I'm here. Coach . . . All right, Wayne, you can come out from under the seat. O.K. Let's go . . . The wrestling team would begin their trips to their away matches. With very few home matches, very few returning wrestlers, and a lot of sickness the season was rough. Coach Crocker has a tough job ahead of him in his second year as a wrestling coach. The bus arrives at our destination. Alright boys, let's go. . . . You guys going to grab a snack? .. . Yeah, the Dairy Queen's open. . . . The wrestlers weigh in. The spectators are ready. Warmups . . . and the match begins. Once relaxed muscles become tense, straining for the duration of the match. Hey Robertson, you got a match tomorrow so don't eat so much. . . . Coach'd like it if Dwayne or Joe were as strong as Marty. . . . Yeah, Marty, you really knocked that dude. Head and arm every time. Late at night the team arrives back at the school—tired and subdued . . Clean the bus or nobody leaves. .
