The smiling young man at the right is the new head coach, Dick Casten. Casten comes to L-P-O from a junior college in Mt. Vernon, New York. The 1959 Apaches faced the season under the tutelage of a new coach - the first since john Strell took over in 1946. To Dick Casten, a soft-spoken Hoosier, fell the almost unenviable task of replacing the wily Strell whose teams were feared from one end of the state to the other. After an admittedly slow start, L-P-O's forces gradually picked up steam until by mid-season they were in the thick of the fight for the conference crown. The Apaches were set back momentarily by a 10-6 loss to Wright in a game played under impossible conditions. But a snowy 27-O pasting of Joliet coupled with a Thornton upset of Wright enabled a season of hard work and some tough breaks to culminate in a league title tie - the first such distinction for the Apaches since the 1954 season. Two early season non-conference losses brought the season's record to a healthy 6-3.
