This years theme was A Trip in Time”. Monday was Depression Day. Everyone dressed in their most depressed and depressing outfits. Toga Tuesday came next with an abundance of sheets. Guesses made indicated that perhaps a full third of the school must have had bare mattresses at home. Wednesday was Future Day. All the crazy’s came out of the wood- work on this day. The school looked like something from outer space, complete with garbage bag clothes and painted hair. The excitement mounted as the faculty beat the seniors in the annual senior faculty football game. The fire department was awakened early Wednesday morning when someone set on fire the wood gathered for the Thursday evening Pep Rally and Bonfire. This angered a large percent of the study body. When students began arriving at school they found For Sale signs all over the school grounds and their bonfire wood nothing but smouldering ashes. Many of the students were itching for revenge, but cooler heads prevailed. Thursday was SCTs-SO's Day. Mom and dad’s old threads came out of the attic as everyone dresses in their favorite old-time outfits. Next came the chilli supper sponsored by the Athletic Boosters and, with additional hard work by the seniors, the Pep Rally and Bonfire. Classes and clubs performed funny skits with the juniors winning and the seniors losing. The high light of the evening was the crowning of the 1983 Homecoming Queen. Lisa Foster’s look of anxiety changed to joy when the mighty Grey Ghost stopped and presented her the torch to be used to light the bonfire. Queen Lisa lit the fire to cap the memorable evening. Friday was Maroon and Grey Day and everyone was encouraged to dress in school colors. Classes let out early for the annual Homecoming Parade. The sophomores won first in the float competition with the juniors, freshmen and seniors placing second through fourth. Friday night we came with our intentions high, however we were defeated 48-18 by the Limestone Rockets. The big homecoming dance with its theme Rock of Ages” was held Saturday night. Lisa Foster was officially crowned Homecoming Queen by the 1982 Queen Diana Conner. Lisa Wil- liams, Christy White, Stephanie Johnson, Gina Reggio and Sheila Harrell served as senior members of the court. Kelly Witte, Junior; Julie Auge, Sophomore; and Erin Meyers, Freshmen served as class representatives. The dance concluded IVC’s A Trip in Time for Homecoming 1983. I.V.C. 1. No one knew what kind of season was ahead of these athletes. Most fans of IVC Football didn’t care what has happened in the past years. This year wasn’t by far a failure in any way. The record wasn’t good (1-8 overall: 0-5 in conference) but the scores were much better than in the past. The only shut out the Ghost received was against a top-ranked Rock Island-Alleman team. (28-0). The Grey Ghost win was a 34-22 triumph over Normal University High School. IVC lost a real heart breaker against Canton. The game went in to over-time and IVC lost 21-14. The Homecoming game against Limestone was a terri- ble lost resulting in a final score of 48-18. Coach Cozzolino awarded many dif- ferent types of awards. Those awards went to the following team members-, Big Hit — Mike Morris, Big Stick — Bert Richter, Most Improved — Pat Auge, Tackling Chart Leader — Bert Richter, Mr. Hustle — Bob Mullin, Honorary Tri-Captains — Mark Hallick, Dan Adcock. Mike Nor- ris. IVC had 8 members selected to the Mid-lllini All-Conference Teams. Special Mention; Shannon Kluge. Pat Auge, Darin Hub, and Bob Mullin. Second Team; Mark Hallick, Bert Richter, and Mike Norris. First Team All-Conference; Dan Adcock. Thanks for the fine season!!! The freshmen footballers finished with a 1-6 record overall, and 0-5 in the Mid-lllmi. Scoreboard: This year the Sophomore team finished with a disappointing 1-7 record overall, and a 0-5 conference record. The team went through many attitude changes and became better with the season. Anne, played by Janet Workman, is a sharp shooter who joins a traveling rodeo. Anne Oakley and Frank Butler (Pete McLaughlin) battle to see who is the best shot. They fight for fame and fortune on the rodeo circuit. After many trials the show ends when the two shows merge and the couple marries. 82 HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES The place is Baskerville Hall, a manor house in the west country of England. The house is surrounded by an eerie moor in which animals and people are killed. Sherlock Holmes (Brian Girard) is summoned to investigate the death of Sir Charles Baskerville whose family has been pursued and killed by a giant hound that resides in the moor. Holmes and his partner Dr. Watson (Dan Mercer) carried the cast through many twists and turns of the plot until the mystery is solved. 85 LITTLE WOMEN V Facing Page — outside: Janet Workman. I want to thank you for having made my A.F.S. experience in Chillicothe interesting and happy. You will always be in my heart and I truly hope we can see each other again, maybe in Italy. Next year won’t be the same; everything will be different, especially for me. When school begins again I will realize, even more, how wonderful it was meeting you and spending these months together. I will remember all about my American year and will be sad for not being with you. I will miss you and want you to know that you have a big brother in Italy who cares about his friends many, too many miles away. I hope the A.F.S. students who will follow me find the same open and friendly spirit that I found during the past months and will enjoy their stay as much as I did. I will miss you all for ever! Thank You, Giovanni We are sure that Giovanni's note also represents the feelings of Leena Euranto. our other A.F.S. student. Therefore, we enclose the mailing addresses of both students so that their friends may continue that friendship, although separated by continents. Giovanni Cerruti Via Torino 218020 10090 Castiglione Torinese Torino, Italy 141 Leena Euranto Turku, Finland i OUR GREY GHOST The grey ghost’ has been our mascot and nickname for many years, yet no one actually remembers how it cae about I.V.C. principal. Michael Mercer, said it was in the year of 1949 when the team was first called the maroons. The name Grey Grey” was in the process of being changed. At this time the history classes were studying about a general named Grey Ghost” who fought in the civil war. Many students liked the way “Grey Ghost” sounded, and nominated it for the team's nickname. It was voted and became our mascot and nickname. One of the most well known stories is of a big home football game. I.V.C. was playing another team (believed to be Canton) and was losing. Suddenly an image appeared on the field. It was the image of a big grey ghost. At this time I.V.C. intercepted Canton s pass and came back to win the game, with the help of our grey ghost. It is also said that the name grey ghost has something to do with Chillicothe’s lighted tombstone. The tombstone is located in the cemetery across from Pinewood trailer park on West Rome Road. It is said if you are driving along the road about midnight on a clear night the moon will reflect off the tombstone making it appear to glow. A former graduate of I.V.C. says that it was because I.V.C. won their first football game on Halloween, therefore taking the name of Grey Ghost The grey, he says may come from our uniforms. I.V.C. had black and white pants, with maroon |erseys. When the pants were washed they changed to grey. I.V.C. was too cheap to buy new ones, so we just changed colors. The yearbook also brought about different stories. In 1937 our uniforms were maroon and black and our name was the Maroons' . In 1938 the team was simply called Chili High”. In 1941, new silver pants and maroon jerseys were purchased. I.V.C. was called the ’Chili Grey Ghosts in 1943. but ironically the yearbook says our school colors were maroon and black. In 1943 the yearbook was called the Maroon and White . Before it was called the Maroon and Black, but the colors hadn t changed. The track team was called the Chili Thin Clads” in 1948. I 1949 the varsity team was called the Ghosts and the |unior varsity was called the Wee Ghosts . The 1976 yearbook printed a story about the grey ghosts history. It reads as follows? The mysterious birth of the grey ghost is best recollected to be 1939 or 1940. The most popular theory is that a new post office was under consideration for Chillicothe. At that time, the present post office was in the Bacon Building owned by Erank Bacon. Mr. Bacon, a prominent political figure as well as businessman, sent a series of letters to Washington concerning the ridiculousness in moving the post office from his building to a new building because Chillicothe was a dying community. He went as far as to say that Chillicothe would eventually be nothing more than a ghost town The letters became public. Then a Peoria reporter built up the ghost town” theme by referring to the high school team as the ghosts from Chillicothe . The grey” came from the color of the high school uniforms. Ironically, the school colors at that time were black and maroon. Yet. because of the fact that many new uniforms were grey and references as being the Grey Ghost. The student body voted to change the school colors from maroon and black to maroon and grey. This reportedly happened somewhere between 1948 and 1950. The Ghost and later known as the Grey Ghost were not the only nicknames over former athletes were dubbed. Our other nicknames were the Silver Clad Boys , again because of the new uniforms, and simply the black and maroon. There are several other theories as how the term Ghost Town and Grey Ghost came about. Therefore, we may never know the real story. Our ghost has kept its past a mystery. 142 IVC LOYALTY We stand here beforeyou I.V.C. Our hearts beating for you I.V.C. In each fray or bout We'll help you out For you we’re do or die. We’re true forever I.V.C. Forgetting never I.V.C. If you FIGHT. FIGHT, FIGHT You’ll come out all right Yea I.V.C. Symbols of youth Memories gone by Grey and maroon Forever flying HIGH, HIGH, HIGH In these years and after I.V.C. Our tears and our laughter I.V.C. As our lusty calls Echo through the halls Of dear old I.V.C. So Grey Ghosts fight to keep that ball Your famed traditions never fall And when we are gone Others carry on We’re one for all! I.V.C. RAH RAH I.V.C. RAH RAH WHO? RAH WE! RAH PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Another year has come and gone. The Class of '84 is now part of IVC history. I wish them all th best for their future years and thank them for their contributions in making IVC a good school Now. it is time for another class — the Class of '85 — to assume the responsibility of studen leadership. And. it is time for the Class of '86 to handle the biggest dance of the year — th prom. The Class of '87 can now sever the shackles of being freshmen and for most, get behin. the wheel of a car with their very own driver’s license. When you think of the thousands o dollars invested in the machine and the lives too often lost while driving, the Class of '87 ca finally feel the burden and the freedom which adult responsibility simultaneously brings. Welcome to the Class of '88. Even though it takes time to realize it. this is your school, and w need your attempts, your efforts, at making it a better school. The years will pass quickly an too soon you will find yourself and 92 per cent of your classmates sitting in the gym awaitin your diplomas. In 1988 your only regret will be that you didn’t try to do more. My advice surel must be for you to take advantage of the many opportunities which the high school experienc offers and not to limit yourself by making up reasons why you shouldn't participate. Remembei If you give to the world the best you have: the best will come back to you.” Our district suffered through some problems during the 1983-84 school year. Financial concern caused us to lose some valuable teachers and some popular classes. But we still have untappe resources, unthought of strength and durability in our greatest resource — the sum total c each of us who contribute to IVC as either a student, a teacher, or a parent. Let’s all reach dow just a little farther and let our best efforts result in making the 1984-85 school year a year t remember with fond memories. For those of you who actually take the time to read this page, please let me know if yc identified with any of what I wrote. Stop me in the hall, chat after lunch in the cafe, or come t the office to visit. I am here to help you and always enjoy meeting and talking to each of yoi 7 144
