The music in my heart I bore, Long after it was heard no more.” Wordsworth Actual melodies last a long as the last sustaining breath of the note, but the harmonies linger on and on, ringing in the ear. The Class of 1983 lost its first member to cancer on May 2,1981. Barbie Taylor's life was cut short like a melody never completed, however the harmonies of her existence still linger in the hearts of all of us, her friends. Barbie will be remembered for her participation in band and chorus. She loved both of them and worked very hard to excel. Everyone will remember her with that friendly smile we all adored. Her personality matched her smile in every way. Her life still lingers on while the music resounds in the heavens where each note is perfect. She must be happy there, as we are happy to have known her. Thus, we dedicate this 1981 edition of the Sequence in her memory. 52 UNDERCLASSMEN Nicole Aaron Chris Altpeter Jeff Baker Darrin Baumgarten Kelly Bodie Troy Adams Craig Armstrong Tammy Baker Danny During the last days of the previous year Ron Tay- lor, former college coach and son of ✓ Chilli Highs legendary football pa- triarch, was hired to try and rebuild y the program and serve as part-time teacher. Coach Taylor worked during the summer to get new equipment, practice fields and build a booster club. He was very successful and ev- eryone looked forward to the fall sea- j son with hope. Unfortunately, the talent and determination of the squad did not prove equal to the ex- t pectations held by many and the var- sity lost its first eight games before - • upsetting Central Catholic in the sea- son finale. Our depressed economy then claimed Coach Taylor as one of its victums at semester time when he found he could not make ends meet in his part-time capacity. Thus ended one of the most critically watched years in our schools long football history. 92 Row 1 L to R: Steve Knickerbocker, Scott Crabel, Steve Staab, Bert Richter, Tony Coleman, Shannon Kluge. The object of this organization is to create an enthusiasm for scholarships, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character. Members of the National Honor Society have earned a grade point average of at least 3.25 and have been nominated for membership by faculty members of IVC. As a member, the student is expected to exhibit a favorable attitude and conduct towards IVC, as well as promote school spirit. Activities of the organization include coat checks at basketball games and dances, participation in parades, and operation of a booth at the Winter Carnival. Proceeds from such events enable the NHS to sponsor a foster child from Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The child, Markadiyono, is 15 years old and enjoys playing soccer. He has an older brother of 16, and two sisters, one who is 18 and the other is 10. The National Honor Society is proud to be able to help Markadiyono, and hopefully this support will continue. Correspondence with him assures that NHS support is much appreciated, and descriptions of his life style are interesting. Membership in the National Honor Society should be considered a reward for high school effort and it would benefit many students to strive for acceptance in this organization. I remember this first day when everything was strange and new and I felt really lost. I didn't know the students or teachers and everybody was talking in a foreign language. The first weeks were hard since everything was different from what I was used to at my school in Germany and with all the restrictions and rules of IVC I felt like I was in a prison the first days. In Berlin, Germany I was going to Gymnasium, the hardest of the three leveled high schools in Germany, preparing for university. Studying there is much harder than in the U.S. and there is much school pressure. There is also much cooperation between students of all classes. Students in Gymnasium are required to take mostly college level classes such as two foreign languages, German, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, World History, Geography, Political Education, and additional classes such as Art, Music Theory, and P.E. There are no classes like Foods, Child Care, Driver's Ed., and Automechanics. Our school lasts from Monday through Saturday but our school day is shorter most of the time. Every day has a different fixed schedule. On some days we have seven classes from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Other days we have five classes from 8 a.m. to 12:35 p.m. All together we have about 23 classes a week. Since school is over early most of the time and since we have an open campus, students have much responsibility for themselves and their school work. We have much fun doing things together almost every day but we also manage to do at least three hours of homework every day. There are many things to do in Berlin. It is a fascinating city similar to Chicago with much international culture, entertainment, and nature. American school is much fun. It offers many extra activities in sports, speech, drama, chorus, band, and all the other clubs that German schools rarely offer. A pep assembly is something that Germans don't know at all. When I went to my first one I thought it was the craziest thing I ever saw. Today IVC is an important part of my American life that slowly comes to end which leaves me sad in a way. I think I know most of the students now and have made many friends, some of them friends I will never forget. That is why it is hard to leave. One last thing 1 want to write about is AFS. I think it is a great opportunity to meet many nice people, to learn about other countries and their cultures, and to learn much about yourself. I would not give away this AFS year for anything in the world. I hope that you students of IVC will keep this club alive and improve it in the next years. Hopefully some IVC students will take the chance to take part in the AFS program sometime. Finally, AFS is a way to keep our troubled world in peace. My A.F.S. Year by Chris Murphy New Zealand Arriving in the U.S. last July was an experience I will never forget. Stepping off the aircraft to be welcomed by a wall of 98% humidity was a slight shock after skiing in the New Zealand Alps two days before. The worst part was being told that it would be like this for the next two months! My first mistake after recovering from the humidity was joining foot- ball. I still can't see how having eleven of the biggest guys at JVC flatten you was something to be proud of. I soon learned no one with any intelligence tried to get the football, let alone score. Receiving the ball was a great way to see a worms-eye view of the football field. The first day of school was very confusing. Almost everything was different from what I was used to, from almost being thrown out of the senior lockers after being mistaken for a freshman to taking five minutes to figure out the difference between the girl's and guy's bathrooms. I soon learned after a week of hard work and homework to relax and join the students who sleep through class, amble to class seconds before the bell, complain about school lunch, and generally enjoy school. Before leaving New Zealand 1 had the impression that U.S. schools would be alot easier than what I was used to and in some cases this is true. U.S. high school is what you make of it, it can be a hard full-time or an easy time spent mainly catching up on your sleep for the weekend. Most IVC students including myself fit somewhere in between these extremes and try to make school a happy combination of both work and play. Before long football was over and the beautiful colors of fall gave way to winter. Coming from a country of 32 winters and no now, the first snow fall was eagerly awaited. It was around this time I discovered mistletoe. 1 shudder to think what would happen if that innocent- looking plant was ever introduced into my country. One thing is for certain, Christmas would be alot more fun. After warnings of freezing cold of winter, it turned out to be very pleasant, with snowball fights and cross country skiing. 1 still have bruises from falling during my first attempts at ice-skating. The last months of school have rushed by faster than I thought possible and now it is almost time for me to be heading back to my country. 1 hope that during my short stay here at IVC some of you will realize that we, like millions of other people around the world, are basically the same. We all laugh, cry, smile, and love the same even if some do talk funny. From July Camp To Dec.
