Jon Fleming Shortly after his graduation from high school last June, Jon's health began to fail and on October 18, 1979, the graduating class of 1979 lost its first member. In memory of his concern, involvement and the example of his academic achievement, we dedicate this issue of the Sequence. Jon was diagnosed early in life as having cystic fibrosis, an incurable disease, yet he approached both everyday and school life with energy and enthusiasm. He didn't view his time at school as a waste of time, but attempted to prepare himself by taking a varied educational program. During his high school career, he studied industrial arts as well as advanced math and science. His junior year he began the study of a foreign language and graduated at the age of seventeen with an A average and twenty academic credits. In addition to his academic endeavors, he was at various times a basketball player and manager, chorus member, a declamation participant and twice class president. Many of us will remember him as Dr. Chumley in Harvey or Duke Forrest in MASH. Others will remember him for his active roles in the IVCHS Student Senate, Camera Club, National Honor Society and Sequence. His teachers remember him for his candid questions, his witticisms and his intense academic efforts. While Jon was diminutive in stature and somewhat mechanical in his movements, he approached all of his activities with a little smile and a husky voice filled with enthusiasm. Where other students found unhappiness and dissatisfaction with their high school years, Jon found a time of fulfillment and happiness. It is our hope that the students of IVCHS will find in Jon's life an inspiration to give of themselves to their studies and activities, that they might receive and achieve the utmost in life.
