In memory of his concern, involvement and the example of his academic achievement, we dedicate this issue of the Sequence. Jon was diagnosed early in life as having cystic fibrosis, an incurable disease, yet he approached both everyday and school life with energy and enthusiasm. He didn't view his time at school as a waste of time, but attempted to prepare himself by taking a varied educational program. During his high school career, he studied industrial arts as well as advanced math and science. His junior year he began the study of a foreign language and graduated at the age of seventeen with an A average and twenty academic credits. In addition to his academic endeavors, he was at various times a basketball player and manager, chorus member, a declamation participant and twice class president. Many of us will remember him as Dr. Chumley in Harvey or Duke Forrest in MASH. Others will remember him for his active roles in the IVCHS Student Senate, Camera Club, National Honor Society and Sequence. His teachers remember him for his candid questions, his witticisms and his intense academic efforts. While Jon was diminutive in stature and somewhat mechanical in his movements, he approached all of his activities with a little smile and a husky voice filled with enthusiasm. Where other students found unhappiness and dissatisfaction with their high school years, Jon found a time of fulfillment and happiness. It is our hope that the students of IVCHS will find in Jon's life an inspiration to give of themselves to their studies and activities, that they might receive and achieve the utmost in life. Amable arrived just prior to the opening of school to take residence with her host family, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Laisure of Lake of the Woods. After about three months of classes Amable commented on the difference in educa- tional systems in an article in the I.V. Cene. At my school in Spain you don't take the classes you want, the teachers just assign them to you. P.E. classes meet only two days a week. The biggest difference however, was in the school day. At home I go to class twice a day; in the morning from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and then return at night from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. All classes were held in the same room. Meeting different students in each class proved to be a new and exciting experience. As the year progressed many of the staff and students came to know and appreciate the shy smile and old world charm of this delightful young lady. Amable, the Sequence wishes to thank you for the joy and pleasure you brought us as the 1979- 1980 A.F.S. student. 83 WHAT I WANT T© BE Brian Anderson- A famous race car driver, Corey Noonen- Radiologist Lee Ann Short- Pro Softball player Jeff Bennett- A professional Debbie Simmons- A happy person Stu Brown- A teacher Cheryl Finnegan- Work in a Punk rock store, Molly Stumborg- Cosmetologist Ralph Joos- A farmer Val Singley- Taller Debbie Snyder- Model Mark Brinson- Engineer Holly Gilmore- Rock-n-roller Ron Bryson- Millionaire Jeanine Lloyd- Married to Jim Nichelson Heidi Christensen- A broad way actress Chris Smith- A garbage man Tim Kirchner- Executive Maggie Cox- Cosmetologist Laurie Bolding- Stewardess Scott Buennemeyer- Military genius Tonya Hughes- Don't know, I'll never grow up Inga Comer- Album cover designer Rosalie Chapman- Nurse Cam Parr- A Grizzly Adams prodigee Liz Vinson- Teacher Kelly Grimm- Taller Debbie Coffey- Interior decorator Monica Carlson- Newspaper photographer Lynn Kowalske- Forest ranger Sue Kovalcik- Singer 84 WI W T B Scott Lambert- Pro bowler Greg Brownfield- President of the U.S. Andrea Razo- Teacher Steve Hill- Forest ranger Kathy Walton- Jockey Rich Smith- Professional track star Kim York- Successful business woman Bob Rodden- Commercial artist or painter John Jackson- Grown up Don Freeman- Football coach of I. It's something that has eluded IVC's football Grey Ghosts the entire 1979 season. In every game they have crashed helmets, blocked with forearms and bit the dust in an effort to achieve the elusive goal. But, each time, the tide was too great and they were smothered by big pass plays and long breakaways from scrimmage. Along the sidelines during every game, you can feel the pain and sense the frustration of the players and coaches. They have all made sacrifices, suffered hardships and spent many of their waking hours striving for victory. Every time they are scored upon, every- time there is a turnover and everytime one of them is injured, it only adds to the grief and anxiety that they feel for remaining winless. When you look at the Grey Ghosts' won-lost record, there seems to be real- ly nothing to boast about. They are 0-8 —losers by all standards set down by statisticians, forecasters and betters. They have battled and lost, they have sought victory and come up empty- handed. Just looking on the surface, you might say that there's nothing about this team that deserves mention, praise or acclaim. But then again, maybe you just haven’t looked close enough. Because when you look beyond IVC's won-lost record, penalties, fumbles and busted plays, there is an- other category in which the Grey Ghosts rank among the top teams in the state. It's seldom talked about by sportswriters, almost never makes head- lines and above all, it's almost always forgotten by players on other losing teams—except those like IVC. The quality that gives this year's edition of the Grey Ghosts a cut above all other teams—win or lose—is school pride. Of this. I seriously believe the entire team, including its coaching staff, has an abundance. Because no matter how great the margin, no matter how numerous the injuries or no matter how fruitless their efforts might seem, they are always striving, always pushing, always driving for one last touchdown, one last chance to make the final score just a little more respectable. Why? School pride, that's why. If you watch closely, just about eve- ry member of the team carries this attitude with them. They have played to the end of every game with the same determination and drive they felt at the beginning. No matter how badly they are getting beat, no matter how great the odds and no matter how small the hometown crowd, they continue to clash head-on with their opponents— with few. if any. instances of poor sportsmanship or foul play. What's to say about a team like IVC's who are emotionally fired for every game, yet always seem to come away defeated. There's a lot of to be said, believe me. Because all season long, opposing coaches have been praising the undying spirit and enthusiasm IVC has dis- played before and during every game no matter how badly they were beaten the previous week. “They didn’t play like a 0-6 team, said Macomb Head Coach Mike Cazalet, after IVC threatened to upset the Bombers on their own field two weeks ago. “They played like they were playing for the championship.” Comments like those have been much a part of opposing coaches’ re- marks following games against IVC. Aside from the praise they deserve for their “never-say-die” attitude, though, what have Grey Ghost players really achieved after such a dishearten- ing string of losses? Well, if nothing else, they have learned to deal with disappointment and defeat—two elements much a part of the real world—with character and poise. Even though they might feel thai their futures will be just as hopeles? because they were part of a losing foot- ball team, they really shouldn’t feel thai way at all. Because since having to face defeat so frequently without ever giving up they have instilled in themselves a strength and conviction for living that will never die. Although the Grey Ghosts haven’t proved to be winners in any football games this season, it's a good possibility that they will all be successes in a mor serious, more intense game that await them beyond their school years. The game is life. EDITOR’S NOTE: Tim Grow is th editor of the Bulletin and he writes weekly column called the Insider. Not Shown: Clori D'Agnolo, Randal Orrison and darkroom staff Kendal and KaiAnn Orrison Advisor's Thoughts The task of producing a yearbook in a high school as large as I.V.C. is a major undertaking. The effort needed to produce the book at one time or other will involve not only the yearbook staff, editors and advisor; but the students staff members, administration and the members of the business community. This year's book was no exception. During the production of the 1980 SEQUENCE, the efforts of the staff, student body and faculty were interrupted on several occasions by bomb threats. All fortunately, proved false. The yearbook staff had two cameras valued at $500. disappear along with some negatives and prints. This restricted picture taking efforts and meant that not all group and activity pictures were available for use. In spite of these problems, the staff has attempted to present an accurate pictorial account of the 1979-80 school year. We all look forward to the 1980-81 school year and hope that the thrill of victory will out-weigh the agony of defeat and that sportsmanship and academic achievement will remain the trade- mark and key to success for the students and staff here at Illinois Valley Central High School.
