The time for being alone in your world to decide answers for all the questions that summer brought. The time to write unfinished poems and sing unfinished songs before winter freezes them forever. The time to end, and begin again as we always do, anyway ... AUTUMN AUTUMN Q u e e n s Erika Humpidge Lori McWilliams Leigh Wolski Traci Horack Cay Pesko Colleen Curry Jana Kehlenbach 6 HOMECOMING 78-HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD was a tremendous success despite some bad weather. On Monday a number of activities began, including a Rolls Royce raffle, spirit chain competition, class float building, and mum sales. Unfortunately, the Challenge of the Classes was cancelled due to rain. Tuesday was Hollywood Dress-Up Day. Sue Minter. dressed as Donald Duck, and Craig Parr, as The Incredible Hulk, took 1st place for the student contest. Charlie Chaplin (Mrs. Frohock) and “The Duke’’ (Mr. Howell) placed 1st for the faculty contest. Later that evening, the Senior vs. Faculty football game was held. Unfortunately, the Seniors lost the game to the Faculty. Immediately following the game was a movie, ' Oh God ', in the auditorium, which left smiles on the faces of the large crowd that attended. Queen candidate and underclass attendant elections were the main events scheduled for Wednes- day. The six queen candidates were: Colleen Curry, whose escort was Dave Lange (bonfire, game, dance): Traci Horak, whose escorts were Doug Hayward (bonfire), Lindsay Roden- baugh (game), and Jim Calvin (dance); Erika Humpidge, whose escorts were Tom Wineland (bonfire and game), Joe Willis (dance); Jana Kelenbach, whose escorts were Mike Marini (bonfire and dance), Chris Conner (game); Lori McWilliams, whose escorts were Tim Dever- eaux (bonfire and dance), Barry Sarver (game); Cay Pesko, whose escorts were Mark Ely (bonfire), Doug Hayward (game), Dan Maurer (dance). The underclass attendants were: Freshman Sharon Haare, whose escorts were Scott Horak (bonfire and game), Tony Gould (dance); Sophomore Jody Kelenbach, whose escorts were Andy Cary (bonfire), Craig Parr (game), Mike Callahan (dance). The Junior attendant was Dee Dee Mooney, whose escorts were Craig Parr (bonfire), Cam Parr (game), Eric Espinosa (dance). On Thursday, faculty and students were encouraged to wear their maroon and grey. The annual Bonfire was held at 7:30 on Taylor Field. The night’s activities included a performance by the Spiritts, skits by the frosh, soph, and jr. classes, balloon sales, and topping off the night was our Grey Ghost (Susan Gants) revealing the identity of the 1978 Homecoming Queen, Colleen Curry. A reception for parents followed immediately after in the commons. Friday was filled with activities from morning till night, as there was no school. Float judging began promptly at 12:30, with the Sophomore “Jaws” float winning the class category and the club float award going to Home Ec. for the 4th year in a row. The Hollywood Premiere, which was held in City Park was MC'd by Mr. Howell. Academy Awards for skits were given out in five categories: Best Actress-Sue Minter; Best Actors-Will Smith and Steve Hill (two wild and crazy guys); Best Set-Junior class; Best Costumes-Junior class; Best Overall Production-Junior class. The Spirit Chain competi- tion was won by the sophomore class and Mr. McGhee won the dinner and Rolls Royce raffled off earlier in the week. One of I.V.C.'s longest homecoming parades got underway at 2:30. The nearly thirty entrants wound their way through downtown Chillicothe and back to the High School. The Homecoming game was a disappointment as I.V.C. lost to Morton, but the half- time show picked up everyone’s spirits. Our guest of honor, JOSH TAYLOR, from soap opera “Days of Our Lives , escorted by Linda Jones, was introduced along with the Queen and her court. Homecoming week pulled to a close on Saturday with the traditional Homecoming dance held in commons from 8:00 till 11:00. Couples dances in a Hollywood fantasyland to the music of Cheez.” The coronation of the Queen was the highlight of the evening. Members of the Homecoming court stood by as the Student Senate President Lindsay Rodenbaugh crowned Colleen Curry the 1978 Homecoming Queen. Colleen then danced the 1st dance with Josh Taylor. Later the court joined her. Of course, none of the Homecoming activities would have been possible without the hard work of the Homecoming committee. Many thanks go to them. Members of the committee were: DeeDee Ratcliff, Jon Fleming, JoAnn Noe, Matt Adams, Dean McNaught. Shari Willis, Rick Trager, Cindy Hughes, Jody Kelenbach, Linda Jones, Dave Lange, Maleea Barnett and Susan Gants. Last but not least, thanks to Mr. Howell, whose patience and understanding really helped in the planning and the actual Homecoming. Former IVC athletes who played under Taylor’s direction filed onto the track to witness the ceremony. The respected coach acknowledged their role in the accumulation of 162 wins, 79 losses and 11 ties during the 27 years he served as coach at the high school by saying, All the reasons for the statistics ... are standing out here on the track tonight. In addition to receiving a plaque commemorating the dedication of the field, the veteran coach accepted from Dale Lober a certificate from the Illinois football coaches Hall of Fame, a presentation by Ben Razo on behalf of American Legion Post No. 9. The ceremony concluded with Coach Taylor’s remark that ’’The dediation of this field in my name has to be the crowning glory of my coaching and teaching career ,.. The memories of this night will follow me the rest of my days. The response of the crowd indicated that the field has been appropriately named to honor this dedicated man. Students T 0 n y C a v a d 1 n 9 Tony Cavadini I liked very much my stay here in Chillicothe, I loved the town with its trees and the people are so nice. I was with the Harry Crull family and they were very nice to me and helped me. I really felt like a member of the family. I had two brothers, Dan, 17, Gary, 23, and one sister, Chris, 21. My father works very hard as does my mother Mar- ian. I can’t really explain all that they did for me, but I shall not be able to forget them. I had a very good time with them. I made several friends at IVC and most of them helped me. I live in the north of Italy in Como, only two miles from Swit- zerland and my town has a wonderful lake. My dad, Francesco, and my mother Rose both work at the post office in my town. My sister, Anna, 22, draws pictures for ties and scarves and she also attends the college in Milano. At last, I would like to say a big “thank you” to all those people that helped me and especially me family, my teachers, my community, and my friends. I hope that I can see everyone again. Antonio Cavadini Via A. Diaz No. 73 22100 Como Italy I travelled thousands of miles from my home- town Chinchilla in southwest Queensland, Aus- tralia, to come and live near Chillicothe with the Duckworth family. My American family consists of my dad Elbert, mom Joan, brothers Rick (24), who is married to Cindy, and Jim (22), and my sister Cheryl (16). They are wonderful peo- ple. My Australian family (dad Stan, mum Beryl, and Janeen (13) live on a cattle ranch, while my brother Keith (23) and his wife Pauline live on their own grain and cattle farm. My other broth- er Malcolm (22) works in a technical college in Brisbane. One of the things that I’ve enjoyed most is attending the I.V.C. High School and participat- ing in school activities. The school system is one I’ve had to adapt to because it differs from that of my high school at home. I have enjoyed the pep rallies, ball games, and taking part in chorus and drama. I have also found the student senate work interesting. Most of all I have liked the school because of the people in it, especially those whom I have come to know and those who have made me feel welcome. I thank them for their friendship and I know it has been worthwhile to have come all the way to meet them. Leigh Wolski “Blair Athol Burncluith, Chinchilla 4413 Queensland . We have seen them this year in the new Heartland Confer- nce. I V.C., Morton, Macomb, and Canton were all left without i conference last year when the Heart of Illinois Conference oroke up. These schools then formed the new Heartland Con- ference. Although this conference only consist of four schools, it is a very competitive conference, and each school has had its shares of top honors in the different sports. In the future we can look forward to good competition within these four schools, because the new Heartland Conference has given the ,r «it schools a new identity and the recognition they deserve. I 1 9 s s Senate Summary In an attempt to increase the involvement of students in their student controlled activities, the Illinois Valley Central Student Council expanded and became the Student Senate. With members of all clubs, organiza- tions, and seasonal athletic squads represented on the senate the group plunged into a busy year’s activities. The biggest and best homecoming in many years got things off to a flying start. Senate promoted and encouraged the use of student designs and the walls around the media center began to assume color and life as the mural painters went to work. In the spring, in cooperation with the Valley Community YMCA and the high school staff, the senate sponsored an extremely successful series of mini-courses. With the increased group size, problems increased, but this did not halt these young men and women. Under the supervision of Mr. Robert Howell the senate continued its activity in district and state student government and worked to continue to improve the conditions for students here at I.V.C. The new senate continued the traditions of previous councils as they proved time and again that I.V.C.'s students can successfully accept responsibility. Executive Council. Parr - Educator, Friend 87 OC OD THE CHILLICOTHE BULLETIN, Thanday, April 19, 1979, Page 4 Lonnie Parr: The best of us all By Date Pfanschmidt Thousands of people knew Lonnie Parr. Many knew him better than I. Few admired him more. Lonnie had a charisma most of us will never duplicate. He was a family man, a man's man. a ladiesman, and someone highly regarded by those older and much younger than himself. He was great with children, from infants to high schoolers. Lonnie was the best our city had to offer. Education may have been his first love, although family and friends ran a close second and third. Lonnie Parr came to Chillicothe from the University of Illinois in 1939. He had previously taught in a one-room country school after only ' i years of college training. He spent his early summers furthering his education and finally went back full time to complete his degree It was then that he moved to Chillicothe to teach English and history. World War II interrupted Lonnie's teaching as he enlisted in the Navy. Then it was back to Chillicothe to re- sume his teaching career in February of 1946. He soon took on the additional responsibiliby of assistant high school principal to Orville Nothdurft and moved into the principal’s job in De- cember of 1948, He occupied that seat for nearly 25 years, retiring in Juoe of 1973. Throughout his more than 30 years in the Chillicothe school system, Lonnie Parr made countless friends and un- doubtedly a few enemies. He could argue with the best of them and usually had the upper hand in an impromptu debate by utilizing his engaging smile, a few well timed compliments and a clear- ly thought out argument. With few ex- ceptions, Lonnie controlled himself and the situations he encountered. You couldn't be in a hurry and go anywhere public with Lonnie. He was always being hailed with “Hi, Mr. Parr” by former students. Lonnie would stop, give his great smile, and reply “Hi. Good to see you. How you doing? Lonnie knew most of the town as former students and their parents. In explaining people to me, all were identi- fied by their high school characteristics. “She was a real cutic. “Oh, he was quite a student. “That boy was a real hellion But the greeting from the “cuties and the “good students and the “hellions was always “Mr. Parr. In an age of disrespect, Lonnie was seldom shown it. He treated everyone with respect and it usually came back the same way. Lonnie had the respect of his teach- ers, too. Some would tell me in con- fidence that he was strict or that he could be a penny pincher with school money, but none ever questioned his educational leadership or ex preyed anything but the highest regard for L u • me Parr, the principal and the man. Lonnie was a physical man and a competitor. Golf and tennis were his primary activities in recent years. He loved to compete, especially with younger men who thought they had an edge on him. It took each of us a few lost wagers to realize the “con man side of Lonnie Parr. On the golf course, he delighted in detailing to his opponent the aches and pains he was feeling and why he knew a bad round was coming on. The next step was to praise his opponent to the heavens for a beautiful swing, length off the tee, or superior putting. But when the round was over, more times than not, it was Lonnie collecting the dimes with a grin. He liked to win. but loved the fellowship of good competition. Lonnie Parr had power in Chillicothe but neither flaunted nor ac- knowledged it. I shall always contend that a new high school would never have been built in Chillicothe without his tireless efforts. He prodded the uncom- mitted to become committed, incensed the apathetic to vote, and persuaded many of those vehemently against the referendum that it might not be so bad after all. If a building ever deserved to bear a man's name, our new high school does. Lonnie Parr was the kind of person who comes along every quarter century or so and ingrains himself into the very fiber of a community. During his life- time, Chillicothe too often took him for jri r ted although we surely respected i.rn for his contributions and listened readily to his point of view. But it is only now that many will stop and reflect upon what he really meant to us all. Hopefully, we will both realize and ap- preciate the character he has given us as individuals, the pride he has built in our community, and how much better we all are as human beings for having known him. Lonnie, you were the best among us and we thank you IVC SOPHOMORE BASKETBALL TEAM IVC FRESHMAN BASKETBALL TEAM Here is the 1978-79 Grey Ghost Freshman basketball team. They began by being selected at tryouts held in March, 1978 and the competi- tion was good. That spring and summer, the girls worked hard to get ready for camp at the University of Illinois. The camp was sponsored and run by the United States Cheerleader’s As- sociation (USCA). Both squads of girls prepared cheers and pompon routines and the Varsity girls prepared a floor exercise gymnastics rou- tine, for competition at camp with squads from other schools. They won at camp and because of it they qualified for Grand National Competition in Lan- sing, Michigan in August. To earn enough money to go, they held car washes, and many area businessmen sponsored cheerleaders. They raised enough money to pay the entrance fees and other costs, and so they went to Lansing, Michigan. There were squads there from all over the United States, Washington State to Florida, and there was even a group from Ha- waii! The J-V Squad won second place with their pompon routine and the Varsity Squad won sec- ond place with their gymnastic routine. J.V.-Front: Jenny Weistart. Swing '79' the theme for Swing '79' was Le Disco.” The well-planned dance showed the dedication and effort of a talented, hardworking Home Ec Club. They decorated the cafeteria and the large balcony, where some excellent refreshments were served. Enhancing the disco theme, were strobe lights, bright streamers, flourescent lighting and a reflecting globe. A mist created by dry ice surrounded the dancers in a haze, lending an aura of romanticism to the evening. Lively disco music was provided by Genesis Rock, a local band. At this dance everyone was on the floor from 8:00 till 11:00. In the auditorium, Mr. Flagg and members of the Camera Club took pictures of the couples in front of a lighted Le Disco” sign. And, of course, the highlight of the evening was the crowning of the queen, Diane Mundy. Last years queen, Kathy Burdick, crowned Diane as she stood with her court Terry Allen and Diane Reed. Diane and her escort Brad Schupp, then danced one song with Terry, whose date was Tim Nibbelin, and Diane Reed, whose date was Mike Dutton. The rest of the couples who attended joined them after the song was over, and proceeded to have a thoroughly enjoyable evening. V I 1M T I. This year had its “moments to remember beginning with the sum- mer return of our cheerleaders from their trophey winning per- formances at the National Cheerleading competetions in Michi- gan. Winter brought snow drifts as high as the high school and many happy band students who enjoyed leaving the cold and snow for the warmth and sunshine of Florida. In March, the Band Boosters brought a first to the community when they presented Maynard Ferguson and his band in concert. The end of April, the chorus traveled to Nashville to take part in a national choral competition. The performance of the chorus earned a commendation rating. The year closed with the traditional graduation ceremony. Yet even this traditional event was made special by the fact that the Class of 79 was the last group of students to have had daily classes in the old high school. Not all the events listed above have been pictured in this book Each event was special to a portion of the school community just as I.V.C. will always have a special place in all our hearts. PHOTO CREDITS Rob Andrews Chillicothe Bulletin Keri Childers Jon Fleming Dena Humpidge Erika Humpidge Jerry Jeffries Jerry Orrison Randal Orrison Carmen Renfro Mike Sarver Advisor’s Thoughts The task of producing a yearbook in a major high school such as I.V.C. is really a monumental undertaking. The production effort involves not only the yearbook staff members, editors and advisor; but the students, staff members, administration and members of the business commu- nity as well. Without the cooperation of all these people, the effort to produce the book rapidly becomes futile. During the production of any book all facets must jell if the book is to be a success. We sincerely hope each years book is a success in telling in words and pictures an honest, truthful account of all the events and activities of that year. Such is our hope for this book. If we have succeeded it is because of the special help and cooperation we have received. I would like to publicly acknowledge the help and assistance this advisor and staff has received from the Chillicothe Bulletin. The help given by John Ford and Jane Miller in; furnishing negatives and prints for material lost and replaced has truly made many portions of this book possible. A special thank you must be given to senior editors Erika Humpidge and Jo Ann Noe. Their patience and long-suffering efforts will be greatly missed next year. Thanks also must go to Mrs. Pamela Orrison who did not maim, spindle, or mutilate her seldom home advisor husband. Thus we have come to the end of a long and frustrating year. We hope that next year will not see fires in our school, vandals active in our buildings and buses, and snow and flood waters disrupting the school year. In 1979-80 may the spirit of victory and cooperation, sportsmanship and academic achievement be the keys to success for the students and staff of Illinois Valley Central High School. 6L dhurrt SYMBOLS OF YOUTH Sports uniforms, slamming lockers, cheering crowds, crowded halls and having a good time are all memories gone by for the Class of 1979. We must now venture on a new road in life, holding the memories of I.V.C. The Class of ’79 not only left their lusty calls echo through the halls of the new I.V.C. High School but also the first Chillicothe High School which was built in the early 1900’s. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Orrison and other faculty members for encouragement when we found it hard to visualize the completion of Sequence '79. We hope that the Sequence staff of 1980 finds as much enjoyment and self-satisfac- tion in the coming year’s yearbook as we have in this one. And when we are gone others carry on. « « A •
