The Secret Of Life I.V.C.H.S. SEQUENCE Chillicothe, II. Tri-Editors Bill Beckner Brad Cook Erika Humpidge Advisor Mr. Jerry Orrison Secret Of Life The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time Any fool can do it There ain’t nothin’ to it Nobody knows how we got to the top of the hill Since we’re on our way down Might as well enjoy the ride The secret of love is in opening up your heart It’s okay to feel afraid Don’t let that stand in your way ’Cause anyone knows that love is the only road Since we’re only here for awhile Might as well show some style Give us a smile Isn’t it a lovely ride Sliding down Gliding down Try not to try too hard It’s just a lovely ride 2 Now the thing about time is that time isn’t really real It’s just your point of view How does it feel for you Einstein said he could never understand it all - + Planets are spinning through space A smile upon your face Welcome to the human race Some kind of love arrives I’ll be sliding down I’ll be sliding down Try not to try too hard It’s just a lovely ride Isn’t it a lovely ride See me sliding down See me gliding down Try not to try too hard It’s just a lovely ride The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time. 3 A FASHION AFS Expands Friendship My stay in Chillicothe has indeed added a great experience to my life. I stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Nauman and their two youngest children, on their farm, about two miles from the town. Ever since I arrived, I felt that I could be myself, and that was very important to me. Like I had been doing it in Aal, Norway where 1 came from. 1 took part in chores and work on the farm and I enjoyed very much to see how American farm life was like. Even if I had tried, 1 could never be homesick, because there was always something to do. An important part of my stay was to attend I.V.C. High School. 1 was involved in some school activities and that was a good way to make friends. I think all the kids I learned to know during my stay were very friendly, and easy to communicate with from the first moment. An- other thing I like about my American friends was that they had lots of school spirit. I always en- joyed the pep assemblies, and the ball games. Since I could choose all my classes, I tried to take classes that I wasn’t able to take in Norway and I found many of them very interesting. As an AFS student, I was also voted into the student council and it was interesting to see how the student council at a big school like I.V.C. was run. A stay like this is almost impossible to evaluate high enough, and I’m sure I will benefit from my experience in Chillicothe throughout the rest of my life. I would like to thank my family, all my friends, the AFS club, the teachers and everybody that have helped for a great year. Thank you all very much! Sincerely, Torleif Dalseide Route 1944, 3570 Aal, Norway Events In The Passage Of Time Our Building Is New . . . 14 Memories Memories are made of things That happen every day Moments as we live them Things we do or say Little bits and pieces Of laughter mixed with tears Paragraphs and pages Written through the years The friendships we remember Mistakes that we regret The ending of a love We never could forget We can’t erase the sadness Or edit out the tears We can’t undo the wrong We can’t relive the years But since memories keep building Each day can be the start Of making new and happy ones To store within the heart. 16 Senior-Faculty Confrontations , the .ky! This year’s Prom was held on Saturday, May 20th. The Junior class worked hard to make the evening a success. They chose “A Night In White Satin” for the theme. The location was the Peoria Hilton where Prom-goers danced to the music of “Eargasm.” Our royal couple for 1978 was Gina Chiavini and Stan Barnett. 25 “Spirit King” Is New This Year Co-spirit King- Mike Ratcliff; escort Shelley Felske Freshman Attendant: Andy Cary; escort Kristyl Dutton Sophomore Attendant: Cam Parr; escort Jill Franklin Junior Attendant: Tim Devereaux; escort Jana Kelenbach Banquets: To Receive And Honor Our Students Winter Carnival Helps To Send Band To Washington, D.C. To the school and community the band is football shows, local and area parades, and basketball pep bands. To its members, the band is hours of marching drill, practice time with the instruments, bus rides to parades and contests and ALL THE WORK associated with raising money for the new uniforms and the trip. This has involved the students in the sale of 54,000 pounds of citrus fruits, the sale of 750 poinsettias, the collec- tion of about 50 tons of newspapers, waiting tables at B. U.’s Student Center and helping the boosters with the smorgas- bord dinner. Yes, band is work, a new director who doesn't know the word can't and the privilege of being the first group in the history of the school to achieve national recognition. Led by sophomores Chip Lacewell and Rich Smith, the team finished with a 6-4 record, placed 3rd. in the conference and 9th. in the district. Letter winners this year were senior Mike Tobin, juniors Victor Gonza- lez, Eric Espinosa, and Trip Bussey, sophomores Chip Lacewell and Rich Smith. Credit and thanks goes to Coach Childs who helped the team to another successful season. CECSS CCUNTET 9 A Few Birdies, Many Pars, And Lots Of Bogeys! This year the golf leam had only one returning letterman. In spite of this lack of experience, the squad had a good year with most of the golfers improving their scores as the season progressed. The team won nearly as many matches as they lost and finished as high or higher in conference and district tournaments as they had in previous years. Senior Circg Leak and sophomores Tom LeMaster and Bob Dunn led the team in most of the meets Bob Bennett, Rich Hayward. Dick Simpson, Tim Nibbelin, Rich Bassett and Scott Lambertall made important contributions and received varsity letters. The highlight of this years golf season would have to be the experience gained and the progress made by underclassmen. If all return, next year could be one of the best in I.V.C. history. The season was highlighted by a 22 - 0 shutout over Princeton the first on the new field and before a record home crowd. B The season also saw ju- nior running back Paul Foster named to the Heart of Illinois All-Conference football team. Other squad members were honored with special and honorable mention awards. Other awards for the season as chosen by the squad members were as follows: Mark Jones, Most Dedicated; Steve Smith, Most Improved; Keith Martin, Most Valuable Lineman; Paul Foster, Most Valuable Back; and Mike Ratcliff, Most Valuable Player. During the year the young ghosts gained much needed experience along with an understanding of the value of team- work and sportsmanship which were strongly stressed by Coach Ma- ley. On behalf of the graduating members of the team, we would like to wish the Coach and next years squad the best of luck in the new conference. ft 60' 12 74 72 70 53 ,MT«3F.T24jt52 UJfce From Mark Ely, Bob Rcnfroc. The Grey Ghosts got off to a slow start by only winning two of their first nine contests. Because of the dedication and determination of twelve varsity players the Grey Ghosts went on to win ten of their last sixteen games. The low point of the season was losing to Princeville and the high point of the season was beating Peoria Spalding in the very exciting Regional Tournament. At the end of the season the basketball Ghosts proved to be equal to any team in Central Illinois. 11 134 Front: Shelly Berkshire. Jenny Walker. Lori Reifstack. Tina Nowlin. Cindy Barker. Judy Lucas. Second Street — Chillicothe, Illinois i IE SECRET CE LITE' III WITHIN The answer to the secret of life might be hidden in these “historical” pages of Sequence 78, or inside each and every one of you who read this page. The only person who knows your secret of life is yourself. Our secret of life is getting this @% $ yearbook completed and I hope it holds up to the standards set by past yearbooks. To relate our experiences, I have a small poem which accurately describes our “Annual Panic.” ‘Twas the hour before deadline And all was not okay. Not a shipment was stirring We were definitely dismayed. We editors cried At the top of our lungs, “Advisor! dear advisor! What can be done? We have lost all the pictures The staff have all fled, The darkroom is locked — I wish I were dead!” Straight through the night We labored (until day), We finished all the pages. And sent it away. Well, since I won’t have to worry about another “panic” like that again, 1 would like to wish next year’s senior editor, Erika Humpidge, good luck, and I hope your annual panic is a little less severe than mine this year. Good luck to the 1979 Sequence staff, for you are going to need it. I’d also like to thank Kevin Hamm, our Josten’s year- book representative, for coming to our school and getting totally confused on what we’re doing to the yearbook. Take time to remember that only in- side yourself, you will find your answer to “THE SECRET OF LIFE”. Z' - • isafibs ;. .iV-V-—- h 6 !' • ric
