The Grey Ghosts were led mostly by senior Bill Covey, and juniors Mark German and Joe Magee. Even when Bill Covey had to depart from the racing scene for the very last part of the season because of a physical ailment, the Ghosts managed to place in district and run in the sectional meet. In the conference meet the Harriers placed three runners in the top ten, but did not outpoint the winner due to the loss of Covey in that race, too. Mark German, Joe Magee and Jim Geselbracht placed 8th, 9th, and 10th, respectively, leading the team to a 3rd place finish. This year there was a lot of underclassmen talent which led to the first Freshman Sophomore team in IVC history. The Frosh Soph team was paced by sophomore Monty Mitchell and freshman Eric Espinosa. In the F S con- ference meet there were also three runners in the top ten. Monty Mitchell was the individual champion. Eric Espinosa placed 7th and Mike Tobin 9th. Mitchell and Espinosa also ran for the varsity team and district, making notable performances. This year's squad will lose 4 seniors with the graduation of Bill Covey, Al Strong, Jim Besel- bracht and Steve Gnehm. Next year's squad will be promising with returning lettermen: Mark German, Joe Magee, Lloyd Passage, and Dave Philyaw. The varsity team will also look for help from the sturdy F S performers. For the first time, Sandy Billington proved to be a fine runner and highly regarded individual for the trouble she went through to run with the 1975 team. Also thanks to Brian Lauber, Tom Rohman, Steve Johnson, Tom Crothers, and also to Scott Meints, who was a fine manager. Most of the team members were freshmen so most of this years team will be coming back. Miss Swanson, the coach, thinks that the girls worked hard, and even though she won't be coaching them next year, she wishes them lots of luck. The girls had two managers this year, Sally Nauman and Betsy Wilkinson. They did a tremendous job in helping the team when they were needed. The young varsity basketball squad composed of only 3 seniors and 9 juniors man- aged to pick up 9 victories in 24 outings. Though they lacked experience, the team finished just one game below .500 in their league play, owning a 6-7 conference record. Junior Eric Kirchner (Big E) led the Ghosts in scoring with an 18.1 point game average while senior Bernie (Beach Baby) Watkins claimed the rebounding title grabbing about 9.2 rebounds per contest. Other players that contributed their efforts were Mike Rushin (Worm), John Klatt (John-Boy), Jim Thornton (Birdman), Big Jeff Warner, Rich Evans (Ritz), Greg Allen (Carribean Kid), Mike Schaefer (Waffer), Steve McAllister (Mac), and Alex and Tony (The Razo Brothers). With a lot of junior and sophomore talent to look forward to next year, the 76-77 season looks very promising. Basketball is ... My Friday and Saturday night. Worth screaming about. Exciting. Miss Renfro served as the coach. The girls and the coach were inexperienced and this proved a handicap. Mary Hickman (55 points), Rita Eckstein (49 points), and Nola Norton (46 points) led the J.V. team in points. Jenny Brooks (47 points), and Sharon Converse (46 points), led the varsity team. The J.V. won one match against Pontiac with scores of 20-9 and 20-9. The varsity team failed to win any matches, but put forward a good effort. The varsity team compiled a 13-6 dual meet record. The outstanding individual accomplish ments are too numerous to mention. Many under- classmen filled vacant positions left by graduating and nonreturning seniors. Our team's greatest asset was their dedication to hard work. Their attitude and desire to be successful helped us obtain our goals this season. As a result of the cooperation and effort that I received from the team, this was one of my most satisfying and enjoyable seasons as wrestling coach. With the returning lettermen and a strong sophomore team providing the nucleus for next year's team, we are looking forward to a very successful 1976-1977 season. L. It has 12 members. The first year they won some and they lost some, but it was a good beginning. This year the team, for the 2nd year in a row, was unde- feated when they went into their conference meet. They won it again. This year the girls were put into one of the toughest district meets in the state and came out 4th. Three girls went to state this year: Liz Schmidt, Jody Peters, and Sandy Billington. My AFS stay at Chillicothe, which occurred during the Bi-centennial year, will certainly remain vivid for the remainder of my life. First of all, it was a great, fulfilling experience to be with my host family, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Scott and family. We learned how to live together, how to share things in common. Accord- ingly, I do believe it's important to bring up that I never felt homesick in my new home. In fact, I hope it has been a memorable time for all the people who were most willing to help out, and those involved in AFS. Furthermore, during this year, I attended I.V.C. as a senior. I became involved in many school activities, which kept me very busy along with my several classes. I took, over both semesters; American Literature, Composition and Grammar, two History classes. Psy- chology, Public Speaking, Bachelor Living, Spanish IV, as well as Personal Typing, Sociology, and Boys' P.E., which crowded my schedule! In addition, I en- joyed going to the dances, to the games, and how to share with all the kids the daily life the school provid- ed me. Again, I did feel at home. Over my stay, every day was one I looked forward to, in order to meet new people, make new friends (which counts most), and go new places, too. In other words, I learned various things such as, to like corn, or how to roller skate. I also marveled at the opportunity to see Disney World and picked up quite a bit of Ameri- can slang! Besides, I've had the pleasure sharing my AFS experience through speeches, and of telling a little about my family and my native country. My house is in Strasbourg, which is a large, industrial city located in the northeastern part of France, by the German border. One brother and three sisters along with my parents make up my family. Maybe you wonder about my future plans. As I'm through High School, I will most likely major in English and languages, and attend a university near my house. Also, I do mean to carry out another project within three years. It is to return to the states and just tell everybody hi! It's a promise! I will finish by hoping that the AFS program will continue on and on in friend- ly communities such as Chillicothe, III. Thanks, everyone! 84 Clayton Lins Lends A Smiling Face I am from Rio de Janeiro which is located in South East Brazil. We have a tropical climate. This year was the first time that I saw snow and I liked it, al- though it is too cold. I come from a small family, I have just one younger sister. My dad is an accoun- tant and my mom is an X-ray technician. When I go back to Brazil I will attend Medical school, be- cause I intend to be a psychiatrist. Soon, I will come back to visit my American friends and family, and remember all of these exciting experi- ences. Being an exchange student was the best thing that could have happened to me. I lived in Lake of the Woods with Mr. and Mrs. Elling Z. Johnson and their family. The Johnson's soon became just like my real family, and they would not allow me to be homesick. I had many good times on trips. Hunting and fishing were great. I learned a great deal of new things that will help me later in life. The Johnson's own a farm which I enjoyed very much. There I learned how to plow and disk a field. This was fantastic because I come from a big city and seldom see farms. Everday I learned something new and met new people, who were always friendly. At I.V.C. I spent most of my time getting new knowledge and also getting to know the American youth. I met a great deal of kids and this was very good because they showed me how Ameri- can youths think and act, and what their goals are. My stay at I.V.C. was very important to me because I could live and take part in American school life. During my semester here, I took Practical Speech, XX Century, Ecology, Bachelor Living, and English I. Everything was wonderful. I am so glad and thankful to all of those people who helped to make my stay a great experience. 85 Top L To R: Mike Vaughn, John Klatt, Jeff Warner, Eric Kirchner, Curt Staker, Dan Hughes, Chuck Walker. From left to right: Jim Dunbar — Owner Jeff Dunbar, Glen Northrup. —X. 201 Thank You Mrs. Skamenca After 28 years of dedication to the teaching profession, one might think Mrs. Skamenca would be pretty bored in retirement, yet boredom is the last thing she has on her mind. Traveling with her husband will fill up the time, besides reading, sewing, knitting, crocheting, embroidery, and gardening. She would also like to spend more time with her family. She has two daughters, both grown and married. Linda is a graduate of Chillicothe High School and Midstate College of Commerce. Linda has one daughter, Eva. Sylvia, her youngest daughter, also graduated from Chillicothe High School and I.S.U. She teaches physical education and sci- ence at Princevill Junior High. Mrs. Skamenca is originally from Henderson, Kentucky, where she lived until she began teaching. She graduated from Evansville College at Evansville, Indiana with an A.B. degree. She was granted her M.A. degree by the University of Illinois. She also studied at Missouri University, Illinois State University and Illinois Central College. She taught such greats as Mr. Marty Ogburn and Mr. Mark Schumacher. For 13 years Mrs. Skamen- ca has shown her fantastic teaching talents here at I.V.C.H.S. Next Year she will be missed, but we hope she enjoys her long-deserved vacation. s come down from the batl newischoo Good luck Bitrgl uer, lege size yearbook will be lassmen will join th« big supce$s and that more und order to MAKE it a successful yearbook.
