Of course, it is Mr. Parr. the principal man around school. RQ! -:Qi These two fellows are kept busy trying to keep the schedule here at school in . perfect running order. Grogan: Mr. L. Wilkey, Sec.: Mr. H. Schatiner: Mr. H. Beaumont. Pictured above are the people who have the last word in the proceedings at Chillicothe High School. With them lies the responsibility of solving the problems that arise at school. These problems are often ca. 1ed by students, lack- of funds, teacher shortage, and public opinion. We are proud to have such a broad-minded and thoughtful group of citizens as these to serve as members of the Board of Education. This fellovv is the link between the Board of Education and the school. Mr. Parr, as principal, must interpret problems for the Board and relay situations that arise at school. He is very capable, and we often wonder how one man can carry out his many duties so well. Always, Frank 7 F acult MR. GEORGE TAYLOR B.S., Eureka College Instruct:-General Science. WILLIAMSON -Q1 The trosh-soph party is in its second year of existence and is continuing to be a whoop- ing success. It is a get-together, with the fresh- men and sophomores sharing the expenses, that takes the place of the out-of-date initiation day. Dough Braasch, who is perched atop Ron Bonati's shoulders, is apparently enjoying him- self. Wandering around with his hands behind his head, perfectly relaxed, is Russ Hardin. In the foreground, you can see the fine fellowship that is prevailing at this party: lim France, a freshman, and Roger Russell, a sophomore are becoming close friends, each with an arm about the other. In case you're wondering about this mob scene, it's because chow time has just been announced. I can imagine what the food supply will look like after this crew finishes. 55 Classes Here's a bunch of busy fellows! You know Dick Chismark. Iimmy Lucas and Donnie Hutchens. They finally found out how to stay out of trouble. at least for the time it took to snap this picture. I know less than nothing about shop, so l won't try to explain to you what they're doing. Do you think Clarence Bowman will use that hammer without hurting himself? Let's hope so! Ioel Nickle lost his nose in this shot. Russell Harding. Spencer Kaelin, Don Fritzinger, and Walt Schaufelberger seem very busy at something, but do you think it could possibly be work? il Here lim Tucker is keeping his eyes on things. Wilbur Stoecker and Bill Kellogg are putting something together. Looking over Phil Augustine's shoulder, I see he's smoothing down his board. Did you notice the fifth party in the picture-the fire extinguisher? lt has a blank expression on its face, doesn't it? we-mghu, Gee, don't these guys look industrious? Bill Shilling, Ray Iurkovich, Fred Grim, Pat Coogan, and Earl Carr are drawing up some mighty big plans. l wonder where Mr. Smith is? They seem to be behaving as if he is just around the corner. As you can tell, these guys are enjoying their work. 'I'hat's Clarence Hellige with the screw driver. I can't see what Doyle Burwell and Larry Duckworth are doing, but I guess it's ok. Larry Dehart is overdoing himself by holding that board in place, but he's probably resting and giving Pete Lopez a chance, l I David Bcdie, Dean Forbes, Don Rhoades, Larry Huggins and Louis Donath are all such bctshful guys that they wouIdn't think of flashing a smile when this was taken, or were they really too interested to look up? Louie appears real studious with his 'specs perched on his nose. On your left is Shop III and that pensive looking guy is Clayton Crull. Hale ph Mitchell and Hay Radley are back there 'cutting' a board: Iohn Ger- stner is preparing his piece of wood for vamishing. And these are our seniors, fas you can tell by their supere ior looks.J Harley Gray is putting his masterpiece togeth- er, and Bob Hart is sanding his piece to the bone f?J no, to the grain. I guess. Iim Dolph is trying to stay in the background, but I think you can see him slavinq away back there. And here is Dick Fislar. He's finally found a good ex- cuse to use his tal- ent-talking. Gee, l'll bet that's the first -time anyone got an A for talking. 58 Gee, this looks like an all-gzrl class. The lovely ladies make a very good octet-minus one and they're singing in Latin, no less. Marcia Conver, Barb Rankin, Ianet Zilm, Dona Zinser Phyllis lRicJ Hicconi, Anita Beaumont, and Barbie Root, make quite a combination. don't you think? Looks like Bob fParrl and Cassie read their lesson for today. Ierry Blew, Bobbie Coats and Ivo Smithers seem to be thinking it over. They may be thinking, This Spanish is Greek to me No Si ' i ' ',.e,5, ' I don't think Dick could have picked a better audience. Look at those pretty teeth Anne Green has. Sam Rice and Shirley Swanson surely look inter- ested. Evelyn Tho- mas and Marlene Horan are keeping their eyes on Dick. Warren fPotsl Irions seems kind of doubtful, but Iack Allison is enjoying the speech class. Classes What a job! Diagraming sentences, ugh! Suzie Evans is pretending to understand it well enough to explain it, but l'm not sure she's get- ting it across to the others. Sharon Williamson. pencil in mouth, is pondering the whole situation. Chuck Leeper, standing behind Sharon, is non- chaiently watching. Charlotte Spear, Butch Sibrel. and Kenny Shepard are enjoying Suzie's teaching. More student teachers! Linda Orlandini is giving a sincere lecture on something. Iim Arnold is biting his lip ftaste good?l while Merle Taylor, Linda Crow, Marilyn Price, lohn Schoolman, Doug Mason, Bill Schuppert, and Carl Carr seem to be very interested in what Linda has to say. Look closely at the book Eileen Poepsel is holding. See what illiterate people write liters ature books. The lettering is on back- wards. Eileen does- n't seem a bit con- cerned over the fact, though English I has changed, too. When I was a freshman we studied in the library. ls Norbie lLumppl pouting? Look at that lip sticking out. Don't you like English? Linda tMartini and Connie lRohmanJ are smiling. Evidently English isn't so bad. What a change, but it is still English. English ll students seem to be working harder. Chuck McArthur, Betty Perry, Diantha Adair, Carol Stewart, Roger Russel fhalf hiding behind Iohn Krietel are admiring Shelby Schafer's work. Some of them might be comparing an- swers. You naughty little kids. Good heavens! English in the library again. Heading magazines, yet! Anyway lim Thompson, lim Rogers, Richard Burnett, Robert Turner and Barb Stanhope aren't working hard at all, English I again! The place has been invaded by freshmen. Hard at work are Lloyd Hosler, David Wiley, Carolyn King. Billie Sisk, Iimmy Richardson, lim France and Mary Lou Taylor. Did you ever see such a hard-work- ing group ol boys in English class? It is decorated with a blue, silver, and white theme and carries the four class beauties: Sharon Harvey, the junior, seated on her throne: Sharon Wil' liamson, the sophomore, squinting against the sun ..,, Mary Ann Schubert, the senior, in the center of the attendants: and Lynn Foster, the freshman, primly perched in her position. They are all bubbling with excitee ment, but they are just doing a good job of controlling themselves while the picture is snapped, Squinting against the sun are Pat Nesmith, Marilyn Hammer, and Delores Streitmatter at the front. They are three members of the defeated senior class, try- ing to muster a smile. With a white sock decorated with brilliant yellow and red patterns, the seniors give the juniors a good deal of competition, gaining second place. Can you see the silver knitting needles that the girls are holding? The juniors do it again! 'I'hey walk away Breathtaking! Intoxicating!?? Gorgeous! Luscious! I just can't find the right adjective to describe the sophomores' float. Though it isn't the winner, it ties for second place, running close behind the winner. Its colors are pink and black, with four pretty bru- nette sophomores in fluffy pink formals bedecking the float. The brunettes are Betty Perry, Anita Koeppel, Delores Lopez, and Susan Sweeney. with first place like it is nothing at all. 3 They live up to their theme when it comes to battling for first prize. Their colors are just perfect for the autumn weather. The birds are gold, as is the background of the lettering and also the sides of the house. The lettering and the roof of the birdhouse are orange, similar to bittersweet. The leaves covering the floor are multi-colored maple leaves. The workmanship is mar- velous and everyone agrees the juniors deserve first place. The freshmen add beauty to our parade with their entrance. With Chuck Davis perched on the throne as Chi1li, they carry out their theme Chilli is King. Buzz Baker represents Dunlap falling before the king, Chilli. Carol Osburn and Iean Elsner smile prettily on either side of Buzz. Smiling from the front of the float are Mary Lou Taylor and Karen Irions. The Spanish Club provides a pretty addition to our parade with their suggestion that we take Dunlap to market! Pulling the cart is Larry Huggins, and on the other side, intent on his work is Pete Lopez. Riding to market is Leola Ordaz and peeking around her is Mary Ramos. This was the first year for G.A.A. at Chilli, and it was joined by many sports-loving girls. The purpose of the Girls'Athletic Association is to promote good sportsmanship and to provide more sports tor girls. Membership in the organization, based on a point system, requires each girl to earn at least twelve points. Points are earned according to the events in which the girls take part. It is a wav of life which changes with the years It is a state of -mind which, like the spirit of God, is always present, yet always must be sought. Democracy is a word, a wav of life, a state of mind. It arose from the dreams and ideals of Thomas Iefferson-a flaming sword which made thrones tremble, a guiding light to the enslaved people of the world, and a priceless heritage Let us listen to Iefferson s address to the House of Burgesses as he links this heritage to the future Gentlemen for the first time in the history of this world we have a privilege never given to civilized men before the privilege of beginning anew here now a government of free men This is a glorious challenge Our forefathers accepted this challenge and so began a new way of life democracy Having secured this precious heritage of democracy what do I a 20th century high school student possess? What do I and my fellow Americans hold in our hands? First of all I am free My parents were American Citizens and I was born to the high privilege of citi zenshrp in this republic Any person so born is free I am the spiritual descendent of those who fought at Lexington Concord and Bunker H111 The blood of Ticonderoga Vallev Forge and Yorktown was shed for me Iohn Paul Iones Ethan Allen and George Washington are mv spiritual forebears I am American Every door is open to me because I am an American When I was old enough to begin my education the finest free school system in the world was at my disposal I did not need a rich father to secure my admission I had a rich uncle-Uncle Sam When I completed my elementary education a fine high school was waiting and when I graduate from high school a state supported University-all free' If I enter politics I can aspire to the highest honors in the land for which my talents and abilities have fitted me In commerce I can win my way without inter ference of class or handicap of birth Every great American fortune has been accumulated by a poor mari: of genius and ambition who was willing to wor This 1S the heritage These are a few of the pr1v1 leges and opportunities that I and my fellow Amen cans hold in our hands For every privilege there is a responstbxlity So rt is with democracv It is our responsibihty as Amen cans to defend democracv from the common dangers Two of these main common dangers as I see them Democracy are: First, ruthless foreign agents here, in America. want to overthrow our free government. Let us be on guard! Let's be modern Minute Men and fight any- one who attempts to take away our rights, our privi- leges, and our freedom! Second, let us not be lulled into the false assumption that one vote alone does not count. Your influence and your vote does count! In order to maintain our rights, we must continue to exercise our rights as Americans. As Iefferson and our forefathers accepted the challenge of forming a new government we must accept the challenge to defend that government Be ware anti Amencamsm' I speak for democracy and I speak for American Youth Youth in time will defend America will uphold her principles and wil carry on Lrbertv s torch We share the statement of Samuel Adams who said For my part I ask no greater blessing than to share the common dangers and the common glory ,.p--.N Lfu 'NNN This determined lookmg guv is the originator of the foregoing essav His name 1S Iohn Harris and he came to Chilli from Peoria Woodruff Iohn has brought honor to C H S with his accomplishments in the field of speech He received first place in the local contest and brought home fourth place honors from the district contest held in Peoria . 1 ' 1 ' ' . . . . ,, . . . . . - . i. Spring is in the air when base- ball season arrives, and Lynn looks as if she might be explaining just that. The smell of fallen leaves and crisp evenings remind us of the foot- ball season, which Glenna person- ifies. Cheerleaders x wi 59, The cheerleaders are the noisemakers and the spirit raisers of every school, and in C.H.S. they present some assemblies of their own creation during the year. Usually about forty girls try out for cheerleading. After they have performed, one by one, for the student body, eight are elected, four on the IV squad and four on the varsity squad. These girls are considered part of the football and basket- ball teams. If a girl is elected to the varsity squad, she becomes a member of the C club and receives a letter. The junior varsity squad members are given megaphones and can look forward to the day they are selected to cheer on the varsity squad. 0 Jumor Varslty K I Kmg T Chxlders R Taylor I Ramos Blew C Davxs M Hutson I Tucker Gould I Dolph D W1ll1s I Arnold R Iurkovxch Th1s xs a p1cture of one of the best 1un1or varsxty teams we have ever had Under the d1rect1on of Coach Lober these boys ended the season wlth 18 wms and 2 losses These boys developed co operatron and team spmt that enabled them to roll over 18 of then' 20 foes When M1d Countv handed our boys thelr defeat, they accepted lt and began another wmnmg streak that lasted unt1l then last game agamst Washmgton sl all l'S is all 'AJ f mtv'- Chilli Chilli Chili Chilli Chilli Chilli 'Chilli Chilli Chilli Chilli Chilli Chilli Chilli Chilli Chilli Chilli Chilli Chilli Chilli Chilli In IUNIOR VARSITY Farmington 23 H Morton 20 T Tremont 35 T Metamora 40 H Dunlap 28 H Princeville 19 H Henry 43 H Washington 41 T Mid-County 41 T Eureka Farmington 39 T Metamora 24 T Princeville 21 T Eureka 36 T Mid-County 36 H Tremont 29 H Dunlap 40 H Henry 39 T Morton 52 H Washington 47 H Y From the expression on the faces of Basketball VARSITY Chilli Farmington Chilli Morton Chilli Tremont Chilli Metamora Chilli Dunlap Chilli Princeville Chilli Bradford Chilli Dunlap Chilli Wethersfield Chilli Henry Chilli Washington Chilli Mid-County Chilli Eureka Chilli Farmington Chilli Metamora Chilli Limestone Chilli Melvin-Sibley Chilli Gibson City Chilli Princeville Chilli Eureka Chilli Mid-County Chilli Tremont Chilli Dunlap Chilli Henry Chilli Morton ' Chilli 44 Washington S2 Chilli 47 Spalding 81 these fellows, they seem to be thinking 2' that SOITIE 27H basket is awfully high. tlleally, of those guys are pretty tall.D The basketball season began on not too happy a note, but as the season progressed, so did our scoring. Farmington was our first foe, and they edged our boys 43-39. By the time we reached the Metamora game we brought home a victory, which set us on a winning streak of five games. The title of high scorer for these games varied between Cook, LeGault, and Boyer. We played in the Princeville Holiday Tourney and then continued our regular season. Our squad entered the Fairbury Tournament held in Ianuary. We were defeated by our first opponent, Limestone, who was later to win the tournament. Chillicothe then met Melvin-Sibley, whom we handed a convincing loss. This gave the Ghosts the right to play Gibson City, but this game ended our partici- pation in the Fairbury Tourney. Among the highlights of our last few weeks of the basketball season was the Tremont game. We upset them 73-64, making up for the stinging defeat they had handed us early in the season. The Grey Ghosts entered the Regionals in Peoria against Spal- ding, again meeting the team that was later to win the tournament. Chilli was one of the many teams to succumb to the Spalding boys. Our team is losing a number of seniors this year including Boyer, LeGau1t, Cook, Griswold, and Gould. They all played an important part as members of the team, and the squad will miss their skill next year. ill 112 Basketball kt BUD COOK Most Valuable YE? This quartette of Schautelberger, Arnold. Hickman, and Willis is a happy looking group. They have justly earned their happiness. They broke the Illio Conference record in the 880-yard relay at the Illio Meet held in Morton. Though our track squad is not as large this year as it has been in previous years, it contains many fine athletes who represent Chilli High at the various track meets. Some of our opponents in track this season have included Woodruff, Lime- stone, and East Peoria. Our squad also participated in the Geneseo relays, the Illio Meet at Morton, the Delavan Meet and the District at Peoria. We had two decisive wins, one over Spalding and the other over Mid-County. With Coach Taylor giving helping hints, the boys represented Chillicothe in the hurdles, shot put, broad jump, mile run, 880-yard relay, pole vault, high jump, discus, and 100, 220, 440, and 880-yard dashes. Dave Bodie won first place in the broad jump at the Delavan Meet with a jump of 19' ll3A . Also, Don Duckworth secured first place in the mile run at the Illio Meet. He missed breaking the record by 71 10 of a second. These are some of the highlights of our 1955 track season. Our letter winners are Gould, Staab, Irions, D. Duckworth, L.
