16 TIN' lmlfhl' QQHARLES Q. lhlggu MQIEW. .- , I .Minis , Q j'HARLEs o. VAN Linw, who succeeds Mr. 1 .4 f Reeder as professor of reading in the Normal XX Q department, is a native lllinoisian. He was born February 15, 1862, in Aurora, Kane county. where his father was a physician. After attending the public schools in Aurora, Mr. Van Liew graduated from the East Aurora High School under Thomas H. Clark, in June. 1881. He spent a short time in W. B. Powell's normal class and then taught for a year in the country schools of Kane and DuPage counties. A ln the fall of 1882, Mr. Van Liew went west and spent some fourteen months in New Mexico, Colorado. Vlfyoming, and Montana, traveling and roughing it. He returned to Illinois in December, 1883, and studied medicine under his father, but went back to teaching the next fall. For four years C815 to 'QOQ Mr. Van Liew was principal of schools in Bensenville. Being so near Chicago he took up the study of vocal music under Frank it Baird, and sang for three years in St. Paul's Church and in the New Eng- land Congregational Church of the city. 'He had received instruction on the piano and violoncello previous to this time. ' During his stay at Bensenville Mr. Van Liew was mar- ried to Ida J. Traver, a teacher, in July, 1888. He went to Germany in August, 1890, and spent three years at the uni- versities of Jena and Leipzig, making a specialty of philos- ophy and pedagogy. He received the degree of Ph.D. from Jena. While in Germany he visited many of the schools. translated Reins Outlines of Pedagogicsf' and Ziehen's 'C Physiological Psychology, and spent some time in trav- eling. ln August, 18923, Dr. Van Liew returned and was called to the St. Cloud Normal School in Minnesota. After only four months' work there he came here and has labored since January. 1894, in his new position.
