The very small number of midshipmen the past decade precluded an undertaking of this magnitude, both in terms of dol- lars and availability of midshipmen to perform the many tasks necessary to produce such a product. In addition to the lack of wherewithal, the desire to pro- duce a yearbook was missing. Now we have the first of what will hopefully be a long series of annual yearbooks. The motivation to produce this yearbook is internal to the midshipmen battalion, led by Midshipmen Brown, Mercado, Wooden, Brew- er, Goodmanson, Bohn, Bugner, Granger, Falk, and Moses with the universal support of the battalion. This cyearbook is impressive in itself, and when viewed withiall of your other endeavours and triumphs, it chronicles a truly dynamic and impressive NROTC unit. I commend you all for your achievements and particularily for the outstanding efforts in the produc- tion of this quality yearbook. In the years ahead you will have the enjoyment of rereading it and reliving the fun and fond memories of your formative years at the IIT NROTC unit. I can also assure you that this yearbook will be a source of joy to me and the staff, now and in the future, as we review the enviable record you have established for yourselves. Thank you for providing me with so many enjoyable moments, smooth seas and following winds and God bless you all. t . C .3 tnA 'O.ir - ' Mlth.ub. 1.; toT 0-3 1.. -O 'u-um3'?3i l! The objective of the unit is to produce the best Navy and Marine Corps Officers possible. This objective is being met through the diligent efforts of fine staff who direct a program which is executed by the midshipmen. Our goals of excellence in academics, physical fitness, and ethics will lift the quality of the officers produced. In the parlance of the aviation industry, the NROTC program is a fly before you buy program. Midshipmen generally have at least one year in the program looking at and eXperiencing life within the military before they have to make a long term commitment. The Navy has the full program time to look at the midshipmen before it buys them as officers. Not all who start finish, but all who finish have been thoroughly tested. This and succeeding yearbooks will chronicle some of the testing process and all of the results. The reasons for the results can not be recorded in a book and will exist in truth only in individual minds, but in many years perhaps this yearbook will help the minds remember the reasons. This motto exemplifies the NROTC- IIT physical fitness program. Athletic prowess is strived for through the physical fitness ; tests administered twice yearly. In the spring, many midship- men surpass their fall scores. Field meets provide fun and en- joyment while they further im- prove the athletic abilities of the midshipmen. The fireman's carry, the situp and pushup races and the tug-of-war are only a few of the many events in which the mids participated. P ..A4AO 1-. van-ay- J.i .x.- o 'fth '.' XW'.XK$K' e1 thva W.
