When we leave here, we'll remember Chicago best for the ex- citement of the fast-paced traffic, the refined atmosphere of establishments like Streeters, the thrill of supporting Chicago's winning teams, and the security of knowing that one of Chicago's finest is always close by. All this and much more has added a new dimension to our livesg one which truly makes Chicago our kind of town. 53-3 mr' 5 41' ' ra' c Air THE S TH IDE, . . . -I . Those of us who have served our time here, can't help but speak of it with grudgeful respect. You can have the Northside with its fancy bars, ex- pensive food, and two parking spacesg but, who else can brag about the prices in Chinatown, the service at Bill 8: Betty's, or a hometown boy like BAD BAD LEROY BROWN . xw-.dust .Lui esss.taH'5-'! It can be a walk along the lake, catching rays, having a picnic, a liquid transfusion, or just plain sitting with your friends. fm' .fs-gf ii 2 2 After being admitted to ICO it only takes a short while before you find yourself rushing to the mailboxes looking for that letter from home. Once school gets going it doesn't take long to decide which lecture is worth waking up for. Then, when you get to clinic, new questions arise such as: Why is my patient a half hour late? or Does V.T. really work? All of this describes a students life here at ICO. His desire and willingness to help the advancement of optometric education over the years has been of unparalleled magnitude in the history of ICO. During his tenure at the college, he has risen from a role of instructor to President of the college. In hope that his mark on the college and its graduates, will never he forgotten, especially his last ten years of distinguished service as President, we, the IN- SIGHTS '82 Staff, would like to dedicate our first edition, to Dr. Alfred A. One organization that receives little accolade, but is. however. greatly responsible for attempting to instill some efficien- cy into the ICO bureaucracy is the Student Association. It serves a variety of functions as requested by the ICO ad- ministration, while also attempting to meet the far rang ing academic and extracurricular needs of the student community. The Student Association is a ubiquitous organization that most students take for granted and few realize the multitude of functions and services it provides. Enjoyed by most students are the spring and fall picnics, the winter dance. the equipment fair, and the school publica- tions, the FOCUS and the INSIGHTS. There are no specific requirements for membership other than a desire to make friends and an awareness that there is more to optometry than checking, chaining and plus lenses. Throughout the year, PTI' has offered a variety of activities from a canoe trip frisbee-golf ice skating cross-country skiing and City. There have been the attempts at sophistication such as A Christmas Carol at the Goodman 'Theater or even Hayden's Messiah sung and performed by the Apollo Chorus and the Chicago symphony But ofcourse there have been plenty of other times when sophistication has absolutely no part in the plans of PTII, as in the liquidation party and the wine and cheese party. PTII is starting a new tradition this year by sponsoring a hospitality room at the North Central Conference in Minnesota and another it the Kentucky Derby. Finally each year the members of PTI' give an award to the non-faculty' staff member who has worked to help the students the most at ICO. This award has tradi- tionally been presented at the Spring Honors Assembly. i v rv 7 V tobogganing, to sampling Chicago's nightlife at Zanies or Second 7 n l 7, Y ZH Y rrfvs' mga , 2. x . . Members are ac- cepted on the basis of academic achieve- ment and leadership. Tomb and Key's main school function is to provide a tutoring service for any students requir- ing scholastic assistance. Each spring a formal banquet is held to induct new members into the organization. Objectives of Tomb and Key are pro- lg motion of learning in the field of Op- It tometry and recognition of professional conduct. The fraternity's unusual name stems from these objectives: the Tomb represents the death of commercial prac- tice and the Key symbolizes the open doors of Professional Optometry. Tomb and Key alumni include such noteworthy people as Carl Shepherd, Irvin Borish, and jack Copeland. Michigan Chicago, IL 60616 312f225-1724 AUTGGRAPHS Since this is our last page of our first edition of INSIGHTS, the editorisl are supposed to write something with feeling and possibly even a little philosophy. Well since I've never had a philosophy class, I guess I'll just have to fake my way through this, so here goes: Optometry is the word used to describe our choosen profession and a word which has come to mean different things to different people. During the past year we have all encountered our ups and downs, but in the long run, we have not lost sight of our general goal. The goal that I am referring to of course is to become a topnotch optometrist. Of course, along our way to reach this goal we have all encountered many obstacles which we have hurdled with no problem. But, are all our hurdles going to be as easy to jump in the future this is the question of many and one which should be thought about. Well, now that I have bored your socks off, I would like to thank everyone involved with making the 1982 INSIGHTS a possibility. It's taken a lot of hard work and many long hours but everyone involved would agree it was well worth the effort. I would also like to thank everyone who bought our initial edition and I would also like to wish everyone, expecially the graduating 4th years, the best of luck in the future. - See ya next year, Dennis M. Brtva, EditorfAdvisor v: U - k 1981, was a year of many attempts. There was the attempt to have the world's first reusable spaceship fthe Space Shuttlej, attempts were made on the lives of a President and a Pope, an attempt was made to balance the U.S. budget and there also was an attempt to have a year- book at ICO. Although the results of the others are known, it may well be years before it is known if this yearbook was successful. What started out as a dream, soon became a nightmare for the staff of the INSIGHTS. Having to get pictures, information, and laying out the student, staff, and faculty sections, became an ordeal that no one anticipated. But now that it is done, I feel a certain amount of pride that is shared with the rest of the staff. Of course, this yearbook couldn't have been done without the dedication of the INSIGHTS staff which included: janice j., Carol K., Cathy H., Patty A., Dave B., Bill L., Caroljqjulie S., and Carla Brtva. I would also like to give special thanks to those seniors who helped, Pat Shroba, Mary Ann Bielenberg 8: Co., and Ruth Salkin. Last but certainly not least, I couldn't have my dream come true without the tremen- dous help and support of Gar Christensen and Dennis Brtva. My last request is that as you look through this yearbook, you too will become motivated to help on future editions. That way, your dreams may also become a reality. Thanks for the fun of meeting deadlines, making new friends, and learning a lot about myself. Carl Maschauer, Editor RE 956.5 .I5 Y4 1982 Illinois College of Optometry.
