The Black Student Alliance was organized during second semester in hopes of promoting awareness of the cultural background of Afri- can descent. Officers were Hearmon Gerald, president, Audrey Sterling, vice president, Berdean Peeples, secretary and Henry Taylor, treasurer. The Black Students Alliance was in- strumental in promoting the hiring of Negro staff and faculty members, in aiding the ad- ministration in setting up Afro-American studies courses and in securing a recruitment program for those of African descent. Mid-Management Club Mid-Management Club was formed to sup- plement classroom work by providing halfday work experience within the community. Symphonic Band The Studio Band under the direction of Richard Richardson performed concerts for community organizations, at high schools in the district, at other iunior colleges throughout the state and in our own Student Center. The group also displayed its musical abilities at the Junior College Art and Music Conference at Western Illinois University. The highlight of the year was performing at the Notre Dame University Jazz Festival in March. The Symphonic Band is new this year and is the first co-ed band on campus. Concerts in the Student Center and for community organi- zations were performed during the year under the direction of Don Lewellen. Chamber Singers and Mixed Chorus, both under the direction of Ronald Pexton, sang in concert for community organizations and at high schools in the area. Trips to Belleville and Western Illinois University were taken by the groups during the school year.
